To think the hero worship of Mary Earps is misguided and hypocritical

The lionesses have made history and done wonders for womens football. Not up for question. I find the attitude of victory in defeat a bit much but that's a national pastime since we win bugger all.

But the hero worship of Mary Earps, odd one for me. I'm no prude but the language she used against her opponents was gross, unsportspersonlike and unprofessional, there are ways of showing you're passionate other than this - it blows my mind that we're saying how wonderful this conduct is as a role model for children and it would 100 percent not be tolerated in the men's game

And to head off any replies around "the lionesses aren't asking to be role models for kids"...yes they are. Sorry.

You’re so right. She should have politely let the goal in and coyly smiled like a Real Lady.

Footballers swear. Get over it. I’m personally more horrified about the diving bastards that were Spain, that’s far more in sportsmanship-like.

Mary Earps is an amazing goalkeeper and an inspiration to young girls - having a DD who has played football for years, it’s so hard to find girls interested in being in goal. She’s changed what it means to be a goalie. She tolerated the nonsense around Nike and her shirt. She can swear all she fucking likes in my view.

wanttoplayboardgames · 21/08/2023 12:25

@WeetabixTowels agree!

Westfacing · 21/08/2023 12:25

Do you mean the swearing when she saved the penalty?

I expect that was merely relief and euphoria - I might have done the same!

PinkCherryBlossoms · 21/08/2023 12:25

1/10

Buffypaws · 21/08/2023 12:26

Fucking inspirational

Sparklesocks · 21/08/2023 12:27

I thought swearing goalies was pretty standard - Pickford is the same for the men’s team.

VisionsOfSplendour · 21/08/2023 12:27

Unless all her supporters have sworn off supporting sweating how is it hypocritical?

SmellsLikeTeenSpirits · 21/08/2023 12:27

Tbh I swore when she saved it and I’m not a particularly sweary person. It was relief, passion and adrenaline after a bloody awesome save in the WORLD CUP FINAL. And it wasn’t really aimed at the opposition. Also - if a bit if bad language is the worst of her role modelling I think the kids will be ok.

Mrsjayy · 21/08/2023 12:27

Footballer has a mouth on her shocker 😄

BloodyPrime · 21/08/2023 12:29

Yeah, I saw a bloke on Facebook complaining yesterday that her behaviour wasn't 'ladylike'. Quite right. A women's place is to look pretty, keep the house and the kids clean and make sure her husband is happy. Quite what she is even thinking playing football I don't know. All that mud and extra washing she's creating for herself. Disgraceful.

Mrsjayy · 21/08/2023 12:32

Male footballers spit and swear and push each others about yet they are role models woman gets animated and swears well she's just disgraceful!

MissJoGrant · 21/08/2023 12:32

"we win bugger all"

The lionesses are the current European champions.

Express0 · 21/08/2023 12:32

Give it a rest. Male players swear all the time.

LubaLuca · 21/08/2023 12:33

She swore, at nobody in particular, loudly and passionately after succeeding under huge amounts of pressure. Big deal. Nobody's saying this is the reason she's a hero, it's just an amusing clip from the match.

I don't know if the Spanish players were swearing too, I can't speak Spanish.

Clymene · 21/08/2023 12:34

She was absolutely phenomenal yesterday. She's the only reason it was such a narrow defeat.

National hero

Willyoujustbequiet · 21/08/2023 12:35

Man Utd may unbelievably be letting a rapist back in their first team but you start a thread about a woman swearing?

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 21/08/2023 12:35

Just had to check we hadn’t gone back 100 years then, when FA banned women from playing.

In short, fuck off. She was epic.

IncognitoMam · 21/08/2023 12:35

Oh I wish you'd been in the pub yesterday. Full of young women shouting cunt, fuck off you cheating bastards etc. Some old men in their looking aghast 😂

Clymene · 21/08/2023 12:35

You don't need to be able to speak Spanish

Excellent point.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 21/08/2023 12:36

I will never understand why people get so upset about swearing. They're just words.

I really can't get worked up about someone swearing in a situation of very heightened emotions and I wouldn't have been at all bothered about my dc seeing that when she was younger. It's a parent's job to help their children understand when swearing is acceptable and when it would be inappropriate.

Alargeoneplease89 · 21/08/2023 12:36

I think she was fantastic, pure talent and fun personality.

What about musicians wearing fuck all, grinding and their lyrics all aimed at children?

Mrsjayy · 21/08/2023 12:36

In there I meant 🙈

Summerrainagain1 · 21/08/2023 12:37

I can't get offended by her swearing, but I don't think she's amazing for it either. Is that what the focus on her is about? The swearing?
