To think the hero worship of Mary Earps is misguided and hypocritical

The lionesses have made history and done wonders for womens football. Not up for question. I find the attitude of victory in defeat a bit much but that's a national pastime since we win bugger all.

But the hero worship of Mary Earps, odd one for me. I'm no prude but the language she used against her opponents was gross, unsportspersonlike and unprofessional, there are ways of showing you're passionate other than this - it blows my mind that we're saying how wonderful this conduct is as a role model for children and it would 100 percent not be tolerated in the men's game

And to head off any replies around "the lionesses aren't asking to be role models for kids"...yes they are. Sorry.

She was well off her line when the penalty was taken, other than that I have no problem with her.

No she wasn't

LlynTegid · 21/08/2023 14:22

Presumably you'd prefer the use of racist language that John Terry used, or the behaviour or Ryan Giggs seeking to silence a woman by a court injunction?

titbumwillypoo · 21/08/2023 14:25

I'm confused, if this was a teacher or a nurse swearing in front of their customers they'd get hauled over the coals. The majority of people are able to do their jobs without swearing in the course of their work. So can someone please explain why "professional" sports people are not only excused for this behaviour but cited as role models?

Or man utd letting a rapist/domestic abuser back on their first team. But yeah a woman shouting fuck off is the real scandal 🤦

LakeTiticaca · 21/08/2023 14:26

Have you heard some of the language that comes out of today's children's mouths?
With no help whatsoever from female goalies 😉

Swearing is unprofessional and unnecessary unless you've dropped something on your toe (or trapped your fingers in the car door!)

No need to swear in normal life, whatever sex you are. I'm sure she was delighted and relieved she'd saved the penalty, but she didn't need to tell the world to F off. Even "thank F for that" would have made more sense in the context.

Also fed up with all the hype of the Lionesses. KJT won a gold medal in athletics yesterday but nobody cares because it didn't involve kicking a ball around.

Oh yay, someone along to police what we’re interested in.

Dont tell me what I can and can’t give a shit about. I have no interest in athletics but I thoroughly enjoy football.

She was well off her line when the penalty was taken, other than that I have no problem with her.

FIFA said Earps' positioning was checked by VAR and the goalkeeper's foot was on the line when the penalty was taken.

“As with all penalties, the Video Assistant Referee checked Spain’s penalty for encroachment by the goalkeeper and determined that Mary Earps’ back foot was in line with the goal line,” FIFA said in a statement issued after the game.

RavingStyle · 21/08/2023 14:32

I find it hard to believe that anyone still gives a rat's arse about swearing, but to do so to the extent that you believe that a wee sweary undermines or, indeed, cancels out a woman's amazing achievements (but not men's) is fucking ridiculous.

If you think swearing is frowned upon in sports, OP, I've got some bad news for you. I am an ice hockey fan and swearing is the least of your worries there; sometimes there are full-blown fights Grin

Oh I love the brutality of ice hockey!

Isitautumnyet23 · 21/08/2023 14:36

I think shes amazing and you could tell the swearing was pure emotion coming out on the biggest day of her life. Im sure shes’s polite and lovely when shes meeting kids etc.

TokyoSushi · 21/08/2023 14:37

Good grief. Have you ever seen a game of men's football? That really would have you clutching your pearls!

Mary Earps is absolutely phenomenal.

AIstolemylunch · 21/08/2023 14:37

I think she's brilliant and if I had a daughter I'd hope she was just like her in spirit. Women need balls these days, especially in womens's sports.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 21/08/2023 14:42

I haven't rtft but OP, have you ever been to an actual football match in an actual ground. The swearing is another level! Not saying it's right, but singling out one player for a fairly mild swear, not aimed at anyone in particular seems a bit pointless. I've actually been to see the lionesses and it was the least sweary match I've ever been to. My DS 17 has just moved up to adult football and the language would make your hair curl!

CleansUpButWouldPreferNotTo · 21/08/2023 14:43

No words of advice for the Spaniards who dived, punched and generally made fools of the ref? Just berating the amazing Mary Earps for showing emotion at a very tense time!

MrsAvocet · 21/08/2023 14:46

I was about to say much the same thing.
I agree that it is unreasonable to expect women athletes to be held to higher standards of behaviour than the men and I'm pleased our nationsl team has done well. But I am fed up of all the hype around the Lionesses too. (Not their fault as individuals I don't suppose.) People are kidding themselves if they think that the interest is because they're women and it's beneficial to women's sport in general. The interest is because it's football and this is a football obsessed nation. The rest of women's sport is still an after thought.

Whatthechicken · 21/08/2023 14:48

It was one of my favourite moments. It was raw, unfiltered war cry. The amount of times in my life I wish I’d have just said ‘fuck off’.

Not sure if this is a wind up or not? You can swear if it’s one of the predetermined reasons you’ve decided on?

Aldo, I’ll follow what sorts I like, it’s a pastime and I get to choose.

Oblomov23 · 21/08/2023 14:49

What? She swore, once, in a release of tension. Big deal.

ClinkyWotsit · 21/08/2023 14:52

Nah, I love her. Backed and believed in herself when she was 3rd choice keeper, a team player, passionate about something she believes in, works hard, stands up to be counted (because I can’t imagine being a professional female football player is all rainbows & sparkles). I’d be happy if DD possessed all of those attributes when she’s older, even if she did throw the odd f-word about occasionally.

I love Jill Scott too, despite her ‘FOYFP’ outburst during the Euros. Also someone I’d be happy for DD to look at and think “yeah, I’d like to be like that”.

WhatNowBarry · 21/08/2023 14:52

I'm the most mild mannered, quiet, shy girl you could find. But I would definitely have been screaming f*** ooooofffff exactly the same as Mary Earps in such a situation. Definitely! In fact, I used to scream and swear my head off at football matches in my younger days, it's just a massive release of emotion. Doesn't stop her being a lovely person, if she is, I don't know her 😊

justasoul · 21/08/2023 14:53

Lakeyloo · 21/08/2023 14:04

@justasoul So unladylike ! 😂

@Lakeyloo A disgrace to ladyhood!

KimberleyClark · 21/08/2023 14:53

I don’t have a problem with footballers or rugby players swearing unless they are swearing at someone. Then it is abuse in the workplace and not acceptable.

MaterOfMinefield · 21/08/2023 14:54

derxa · 21/08/2023 13:58

Agree! Good old Jill Scott

I know! I loved seeing her appear on ITV pitchside this World Cup. Fuckin legend.
