To think the hero worship of Mary Earps is misguided and hypocritical

The lionesses have made history and done wonders for womens football. Not up for question. I find the attitude of victory in defeat a bit much but that's a national pastime since we win bugger all.

But the hero worship of Mary Earps, odd one for me. I'm no prude but the language she used against her opponents was gross, unsportspersonlike and unprofessional, there are ways of showing you're passionate other than this - it blows my mind that we're saying how wonderful this conduct is as a role model for children and it would 100 percent not be tolerated in the men's game

And to head off any replies around "the lionesses aren't asking to be role models for kids"...yes they are. Sorry.

Awa bile yer heid min (from a clearly non English person)

wineschmine · 21/08/2023 12:49

What did she actually say? I understand it was just swearing in relief euphoria? Not directed at the opposition?

The Spanish player giving the finger is disappointing. That's bad sportsmanship.

Fannyfiggs · 21/08/2023 12:49

Golly gosh, Fannyfiggs was also horrified to hear that young lady say a rude word. And who gave her permission to leave her husband and the kitchen?? It wasn't ladylike at all. I think her mummy should have a word with her about how one should act in goals at the world cup..

look out op your internalised misogyny’s showing!

why on earth should she be held to any different standards than then men? Good on her I say, she was magnificent.

This

The problem is the game itself. So it's good that womens football us now celebrated but sad that any football is, now we'll start getting girls saying they want to be footballer and wasting their education and life for a pipe dream that won't happen which is sad.
And the values of all football seem offensive so guess that's an issue too.

How awful for them, training in a team sport and keeping fit alongside their education. Down with ambition in sport! Perhaps someone should tell Alex Scott she's wasted her potential.

She was absolutely phenomenal yesterday. She's the only reason it was such a narrow defeat.

National hero

She was good but it was an awful, awful penalty

floribunda18 · 21/08/2023 13:02

Earps is utterly bloody brilliant and seems like a fantastic role model to me.

YABVVU.

I've seen many a crap penalty kick go in the net in the men's game.

It also wasn't the only save she made....

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/08/2023 13:07

Goal keepers always swear. I mean all football players do b her goalies in particular are often caught on camera shouting “fuck” this and that.

Its a tense position to be in Id imagine!

Peter Schmeichal I’m sure only knew the words “fuck off” for the first few years in England (slight exaggeration!)

enchantedsquirrelwood · 21/08/2023 13:07

Swearing is unprofessional and unnecessary unless you've dropped something on your toe (or trapped your fingers in the car door!)

No need to swear in normal life, whatever sex you are. I'm sure she was delighted and relieved she'd saved the penalty, but she didn't need to tell the world to F off. Even "thank F for that" would have made more sense in the context.

Also fed up with all the hype of the Lionesses. KJT won a gold medal in athletics yesterday but nobody cares because it didn't involve kicking a ball around.

ShadowPuppets · 21/08/2023 12:55

If you want to talk about Mary Earps and unreasonable, how about the fact that Nike didn’t see fit to sell her shirt? Not to add that she offered to pay for production herself… https://amp.theguardian.com/football/2023/aug/20/nike-replica-mary-earps-lionesses-england-shirt-world-cup-final-golden-glove

This was awful to read. After the game yesterday I thought about getting one for my son…how long have little girls been wearing shirts with the male players on? Thought it would be nice to do the opposite and hers would’ve been my first choice. She’s an absolute hero.

Xrays · 21/08/2023 13:09

WeetabixTowels · 21/08/2023 12:24

You’re so right. She should have politely let the goal in and coyly smiled like a Real Lady.

Footballers swear. Get over it. I’m personally more horrified about the diving bastards that were Spain, that’s far more in sportsmanship-like.

Mary Earps is an amazing goalkeeper and an inspiration to young girls - having a DD who has played football for years, it’s so hard to find girls interested in being in goal. She’s changed what it means to be a goalie. She tolerated the nonsense around Nike and her shirt. She can swear all she fucking likes in my view.

Absolutely this.

My 11 year old ds is obsessed with football. He loves the men’s and women’s teams. He cried when we lost yesterday! And he adores Mary E as much as Pickford. She’s fantastic and I feel so proud that we’re now at a stage where my son loves the women’s team as much as the men’s. Just brilliant.

Op, I sincerely hope you come on here complaining about the foul language male footballers use?

Cas112 · 21/08/2023 13:13

All that swearing your children are going to go and do now after watching that

Football has always been more popular than athletics. I'm glad that the women are finally getting the recognition that they deserve.

Xrays · 21/08/2023 13:14

We didn’t even realised she’d sworn when we watched the game live, it was only afterwards when I read about in online that I knew she’d done it!

Xrays · 21/08/2023 13:15

*realise

Mikimoto · 21/08/2023 13:15

Her and that English bowler were both disgusting.

And they both lost.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 21/08/2023 13:16

I think the hero worship of ANYONE is misguided and a bit stupid. We should stop doing it altogether then we won't have 'egg on faces' when the 'hero' falls from grace (in our eyes).

I too though am delighted at the profile of women in football now and I thought the Lionesses (as a team) did an outstanding job, regardless of the result.

Early 00's if not earlier. Holly and Jessica were both wearing "Beckham" Man U shirts when Huntley abducted them.

Lucyintheskywithadiamond · 21/08/2023 13:21

swearing??? OMG, how terrible, shameful behaviour…. Get a fucking grip!

Caroldear · 21/08/2023 13:24

@VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia Mentioning that awful murder event. How has that helped us today?

Sheruns · 21/08/2023 13:25

LubaLuca · 21/08/2023 12:33

She swore, at nobody in particular, loudly and passionately after succeeding under huge amounts of pressure. Big deal. Nobody's saying this is the reason she's a hero, it's just an amusing clip from the match.

I don't know if the Spanish players were swearing too, I can't speak Spanish.

They did swear. One of them shouted hijo de puta.

I'd have sworn if I'd saved a penalty in the world cup final! Good for her. As for being a role model, I'd rather my kids grew up thinking swearing in high adrenaline moments is OK than fighting, raping or any of the other things some "role models" do.
