To think the hero worship of Mary Earps is misguided and hypocritical

The lionesses have made history and done wonders for womens football. Not up for question. I find the attitude of victory in defeat a bit much but that's a national pastime since we win bugger all.

But the hero worship of Mary Earps, odd one for me. I'm no prude but the language she used against her opponents was gross, unsportspersonlike and unprofessional, there are ways of showing you're passionate other than this - it blows my mind that we're saying how wonderful this conduct is as a role model for children and it would 100 percent not be tolerated in the men's game

And to head off any replies around "the lionesses aren't asking to be role models for kids"...yes they are. Sorry.

I can't get offended by her swearing, but I don't think she's amazing for it either. Is that what the focus on her is about? The swearing?

I assume that the praise she is getting is focused on the brilliant job she did in goal. Not the swearing!

WhateverMate · 21/08/2023 12:38

unsportspersonlike?

Did you mean sports woman?

IncognitoMam · 21/08/2023 12:39

Funniest bit in the pub was a lad shouting fuck off and his mam saying stop fucking swearing you're only 12. Him saying well you swear. She saying I'm fucking 42 😂

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 21/08/2023 12:39

Clymene · 21/08/2023 12:35

You don't need to be able to speak Spanish

😂

fatisnotafeeling · 21/08/2023 12:39

Nope can't get offended by swearing, she was absolutely amazing.

I think I have a girl crush Grin

Yes, that's what I thought? This thread seems to imply it's about the swearing. Which really is neither here nor there in terms of her performance.

Man Utd may unbelievably be letting a rapist back in their first team but you start a thread about a woman swearing?

indeee!

A rapist is apparently less offensive than a swearing woman.

Papernotplastic · 21/08/2023 12:40

I remember playing netball at school and someone swore within earshot of the teacher. She told them off and sent them inside. It was November and it was freezing outside. The rest of us swore prodigiously for the rest of the lesson but she pretended not to hear.

Peony654 · 21/08/2023 12:41

it would 100 percent not be tolerated in the men's game

clearly you've never seen a men's game. She said one swear word. Male footballers are constantly getting arrested for sexual harassments, sexual assult, drunk driving, animal abuse. Such sexism in your post.

AuntMarch · 21/08/2023 12:41

Not tolerated in the mens game?

Have you ever watched one?

Beezknees · 21/08/2023 12:41

I swear at work. So do most of my colleagues. Most kids have probably heard swear words from their own parents.

justanothernamechangemonday · 21/08/2023 12:41

She's infuckingcredible. She fucking deserved to win the fucking golden glove, what a fucking legend.

Spain were fucking diving all over the fucking place.

Ladylike. What does that even fucking mean??

When COVID restrictions meant fans couldn’t attend games, you could hear clearly what players were shouting to each other. I expect the OP would need smelling salts if she watches the footage

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 21/08/2023 12:42

Of course it's tolerated in the men's game when not directed at anyone in particular. You can see what they're mouthing pretty clearly!

itsmylife7 · 21/08/2023 12:43

Naughty woman swearing 🙄

She is bloody amazing as a goalkeeper.

The Lionesses done us proud.💪

Boomboom22 · 21/08/2023 12:43

The problem is the game itself. So it's good that womens football us now celebrated but sad that any football is, now we'll start getting girls saying they want to be footballer and wasting their education and life for a pipe dream that won't happen which is sad.
And the values of all football seem offensive so guess that's an issue too.

feathermucker · 21/08/2023 12:43

Tame compared to what you see in the men's game.

I saw passion, commitment and grit. You chose to see something else. I'm not offended in the slightest.

arethereanyleftatall · 21/08/2023 12:44

I couldn't get past your first paragraph op. Haven't read any further yet.

So many people in the Uk know fuck all about sport. Op being one.

We are BRILLIANT at sport for such a small nation. BRILLIANT. We just came 2nd in the world tournament. There's 180 countries, many much much larger than ours.

Op - just curious - do you think Australia are good at sport? Because if you do, it will show your very limited knowledge of actual results, and just going by marketing and portrayal.

I think the OP is implying that the swearing cancels out her other achievements and makes them worthless.

Some people are weirdly sensitive about stuff like this.

F1ymetothetoon · 21/08/2023 12:44

Yep you're being unfuckingreasonable.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/08/2023 12:46

look out op your internalised misogyny’s showing!

why on earth should she be held to any different standards than then men? Good on her I say, she was magnificent.

Danikm151 · 21/08/2023 12:47

All I could think was how dirty Spain were playing yesterday.

Mary Earps got the golden glove of the tournament for a good reason. Yes she swears so do many other women!

I’ll leave you to clutch your pearls.

Willyoujustbequiet · 21/08/2023 12:35

Exactly and people are more concerned that a "lady " swore on TV.

I say Fuck offffff. 😉

WeetabixTowels · 21/08/2023 12:48

One of my highlights of the Euros was Jill Scott saying ‘fuck off you fucking prick’ to the German playing who grabbed her boob. We all need to be a bit more Jill and Mary IMO

VelvetUndergrounds · 21/08/2023 12:48

BloodyPrime · 21/08/2023 12:29

Yeah, I saw a bloke on Facebook complaining yesterday that her behaviour wasn't 'ladylike'. Quite right. A women's place is to look pretty, keep the house and the kids clean and make sure her husband is happy. Quite what she is even thinking playing football I don't know. All that mud and extra washing she's creating for herself. Disgraceful.

Haha! Quite! Grin
