To think the hero worship of Mary Earps is misguided and hypocritical

The lionesses have made history and done wonders for womens football. Not up for question. I find the attitude of victory in defeat a bit much but that's a national pastime since we win bugger all.

But the hero worship of Mary Earps, odd one for me. I'm no prude but the language she used against her opponents was gross, unsportspersonlike and unprofessional, there are ways of showing you're passionate other than this - it blows my mind that we're saying how wonderful this conduct is as a role model for children and it would 100 percent not be tolerated in the men's game

And to head off any replies around "the lionesses aren't asking to be role models for kids"...yes they are. Sorry.

I think she was swearing at her own team. Basically saying, I've done my job, don't come and praise me, get back out there and do your job, there's not much time left and I want to win!

This!

randomchap · 21/08/2023 13:52

I've rarely heard people complain about swearing in the men's game. Earp's reaction reminded me of Stuart Pearce's sweary celebration in Euro 96 and that was mostly applauded.

Can't see why the women's game should be held to different standards.

Give it a rest. Male players swear all the time.

And spit.

Anoushkaka · 21/08/2023 13:54

She saved a penalty in a World Cup Final. I think fuck of was quite mild actually. Love Mary.

Simonjt · 21/08/2023 13:56

It wasn’t quite as good as “fuck off you fucking prick” during the euro’s 🤣

Riapia · 21/08/2023 13:57

Most 10yo kids will have heard that in the playground already.

derxa · 21/08/2023 13:58

Agree! Good old Jill Scott

FireflyJar · 21/08/2023 14:02

I LOVE Mary Earps
If I were 10 I would want to be playing footie and I hate sports in general!!

dikwad · 21/08/2023 14:03

Nah, you see, what I think important is that yesterday, we saw womens (not sportsperson) football on the main news channels, being supported by thousands and thousands of people worldwide - something not even imaginable when I was a little girl wearing my Sheffield United shirt practising penalties against my dad on the field. Women on the road to equality in sport is role model stuff and if Mary Earps wants to swear while she's on that road then just fucking let her.

justasoul · 21/08/2023 13:53

She dances on tables too Grin

@justasoul So unladylike ! 😂

BitOutOfPractice · 21/08/2023 14:06

There are many things in life that are “totally unnecessary” @enchantedsquirrelwood indeed football is one of them. So is opera. And really nice wine. Or lovely frivolous clothes. But life would indeed be a poorer place without them. And i Happen to like swearing. It adds to me life’s rich tapestry. And you can’t fucking stop me!

GnomeDePlume · 21/08/2023 14:06

So sweet, so naive, the idea that there isn't swearing in the men's game! The reason we don't hear it is because they can't use the feed from pitchside mikes otherwise the commentary would be one long apology for the language!

Timetochangegonzo · 21/08/2023 14:07

I hadn’t noticed that but just watched it. Amazing. Go Mary!

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 21/08/2023 14:07

Win fuck all…?

2nd place women’s World Cup is brilliant. And didn’t they win the UEFA women’s Euro last year?

I’m not sufficiently informed to have a strong opinion about the other potential issues you’ve mentioning. But swearing is very common in men’s football, isn’t it?

SlashBeef · 21/08/2023 14:07

I think she's fantastic. My 8 year football playing daughter loves her too 😊 I could rattle of a list of at least 20 current "role models" I wouldn't want my daughter to look up to. If she grows up to be an "unladylike" sweary footballer I'll be quite relieved.

StillWantingADog · 21/08/2023 14:09

I’m not a sweary person but I think she was and is fucking phenomenal

StillWantingADog · 21/08/2023 14:10

derxa · 21/08/2023 13:58

Agree! Good old Jill Scott

Yep that was a classic

Windowcleaning · 21/08/2023 14:12

Give over. Swearing is commonplace and accepted in football - there was plenty of swearing from the Spanish team as well.

I've loved Mary since the Euros last year - so talented and solid.

FrenchandSaunders · 21/08/2023 14:12

@justasoul I never tire of watching that clip, she seems a great laugh as well as being a fab GK.

CornishGem1975 · 21/08/2023 14:14

I love swearing. In the right moment, there's nothing else that beats it.

I also don't shield my kids from it, they know it's not appropriate for them to use it so I wouldn't be adjusting my cardi over a footballer saying fuck.

As a previous poster said, I'd rather my daughter idolised a female footballer that says the word fuck that many many other types of people they are constantly exposed to, and probably more often.

melaniepond · 21/08/2023 14:14

She was well off her line when the penalty was taken, other than that I have no problem with her.

Clefable · 21/08/2023 14:15

If you think swearing is frowned upon in sports, OP, I've got some bad news for you. I am an ice hockey fan and swearing is the least of your worries there; sometimes there are full-blown fights Grin

Sayitaintso33 · 21/08/2023 14:17

Sometimes aggression is inspirational.

Dramatic · 21/08/2023 14:21

The praise she's getting is for her amazing penalty save and her performances in general over this world cup. She is outstanding. The swearing does not matter one jot

Jill Scott shouting "fuck off you fucking prick!" being shown in slow mo by the BBC followed by an apology by the commentator for any lip readers watching was one of the comedic highlights of the euros, this was similar.
