To think the hero worship of Mary Earps is misguided and hypocritical

The lionesses have made history and done wonders for womens football. Not up for question. I find the attitude of victory in defeat a bit much but that's a national pastime since we win bugger all.

But the hero worship of Mary Earps, odd one for me. I'm no prude but the language she used against her opponents was gross, unsportspersonlike and unprofessional, there are ways of showing you're passionate other than this - it blows my mind that we're saying how wonderful this conduct is as a role model for children and it would 100 percent not be tolerated in the men's game

And to head off any replies around "the lionesses aren't asking to be role models for kids"...yes they are. Sorry.

Fuck me! The prissy pearl-clutching from a few members is hilarious.

Please bugger off back to 1953 with your delicate sensibilities and leave the rest of us to do and say what we want. Because we can.

Footballer has a mouth on her shocker 😄

Grin ⚽ ⚽ ⚽

Meh, sorry OP. I'd have babies for Mary Earps I would.
All this comparing to what men do... who cares what the blokes do? Why are people here so obsessed with men. Sheesh.

DH suggested I post .

Where exactly was the sexism in OP's post? Nowhere did she say it is was less acceptable for Earp to swear because she was female. Nowhere did she use the word "unladylike." So much extrapolation on this thread.

If you want to swear crack on but people are allowed not to like it. Honestly the general attitude on Mumsnet to swearing is so juvenile.

I wonder why people are so keen to pile on to a complete stranger with language that they know she finds offensive. You've very likely made somebody feel like absolute shit just for expressing an opinion. What do you get out of it?

ghostyslovesheets · 21/08/2023 23:10

What do you get out of berating people - maybe start there?

Mumof2teens79 · 21/08/2023 23:11

Have you ever watched a men's game of any sport? It's totally tolerated.

So the "model" is to not have A-levels, get covered in cheap tattoos and swear disgustingly in front of millions of kids on national tv?
How about any male partners involved: do they were polo shirts done up to the top, and white trainers? Because that's a great look.

Having read and digested your witterings, I can only conclude you are talking through your backside.

alibongo5 · 21/08/2023 23:33

When I read the OP's post, I thought Mary Earps had been racist, abusive or otherwise objectionable. But it seems the objection was that she swore when she saved the penalty? And that "absolutely wouldn't be tolerated in the men's game" What the actual fuck?

A woman who didn't achieve her A-levels (I actually didn't know this) has managed to find a career that she excels at, takes her all over the world, publicly recognises her achievements and pays a living wage?

Crack on Mary she's done better than me with my A level results and as the mother of a not very academic child, I welcome anyone that shows him you can still be successful and happy away from the standard exams then uni pathway.

MasterBeth, I asked why it is acceptable for sports people to use foul language at their place of work and still be cited as role models and not face disciplinary actions yet in most other professions behaviour like that would result in major sanctions?

Swearing really isn't a big deal any more. When a senior member of the party of government think it's acceptable to say that asylum seekers should "Fuck off" back to France and the nearest thing to criticism from his peers was to comment on his "salty language", surely you realise that it's pretty standard?

Ersorrywhatnow · 22/08/2023 09:05

Oh no! Did the nice lady yell ‘Fuck, yeah!’ After being one of the only people in the world to save a pen like that in a World Cup final?!
How DARE she, sod all those barriers she’s overcome to be one of the best sport women in the world then. I for one don’t want my DD admiring someone at the top of her profession, breaking every stereotype, big and strong, unapologetic for who she is.
Notnif she’s not going to behave like a LADY!

TheBarbieEffect · 22/08/2023 09:05

YANBU. She’s a disgrace.

TheBarbieEffect · 22/08/2023 09:06

@Ersorrywhatnow No, she didn’t. She yelled “fuck off”.

Ersorrywhatnow · 22/08/2023 09:06

‘And that "absolutely wouldn't be tolerated in the men's game" What the actual fuck?’

Indeed. Have you HEARD the language the men use at each other and the refs on a regular basis???

Ersorrywhatnow · 22/08/2023 09:08

@TheBarbieEffect oh she yelled a few things. Have a look.
probably because goal keepers don’t normally save those pens …

Rugby referees do not tolerate being sworn at. The offending player may be sin-binned or even sent off and the other side awarded a penalty. Football could learn from rugby…..

Am I being slow or is this a joke because you’ve also sworn?

BitOutOfPractice · 22/08/2023 10:20

I have literally been waiting for someone to come on and say how civilized rugby is compared to football. Bar the institutional cheating, the well-documented institutional racism, homophobia and misogyny, the stamping and gouging etc etc but it's all fine because the players don't argue with the ref!

Rugby players DO swear on the pitch. You are right swearing AT the referee is not tolerated. But rugby players swear on the pitch ALL the time.

I agree. Professional (and amateur) rugby has lots of poor culture, it's just different poor culture to football.

This has to be a troll thread because the OP is one of the most ridiculous posts I’ve read on here - against some pretty stiff competition.

The giveaway that it’s a wind up is the 100% wouldn’t be tolerated in the man’s game. Errr because no make footballer has ever said the word fuck in the whole history of the world ever have they? 🤣🤣

I wondered that but op has posted a fair amount 😕

FluffyDiplodocus · 22/08/2023 21:53

In a world full of Kardashians and the like, I am delighted that my impressionable 7yo DD (who plays football, quite often in goal) watched the match with me and saw a fantastic role model - several tbh, but Mary Earps definitely made an impression. Can't say I'm particularly bothered about the swearing given the context!
