To think the hero worship of Mary Earps is misguided and hypocritical

The lionesses have made history and done wonders for womens football. Not up for question. I find the attitude of victory in defeat a bit much but that's a national pastime since we win bugger all.

But the hero worship of Mary Earps, odd one for me. I'm no prude but the language she used against her opponents was gross, unsportspersonlike and unprofessional, there are ways of showing you're passionate other than this - it blows my mind that we're saying how wonderful this conduct is as a role model for children and it would 100 percent not be tolerated in the men's game

And to head off any replies around "the lionesses aren't asking to be role models for kids"...yes they are. Sorry.

OP posts:

I took it as complete adrenalin release after a very tense and hard moment and just that - it did not look like it was directed at anyone in particular. . I don't think women aren't allowed to swear & yes I suspect male footballers have done much much worse.

I still think she is a role model. Was she meant to say in the moment "Sorry darling , I saved your goal" I get the point abut swearing but to be honest during the match I didn't notice it - I thought the Spanish players finger was more obvious and more offensive.

BallaiLuimni · 21/08/2023 13:30

I find the English weirdness around swearing totally endearing. It's so twee.

ghostyslovesheets · 21/08/2023 13:34

I mean - the OP isn't coming back as this is a total wind up thread but

Women and girls have been wearing men's shirts since the game began - My mum is 75 and LOVES football - it's not a new thing.

Swearing is part of the game - it's passionate, fast, pressured and competitive - I couldn't give a tiny rats wank if someone thinks it's 'un ladylike' - they are women not 'little ladies' and they can say fuck all they want - they where in a World Cup final - and 'win nothing' - we are current European Cup holders for FUCKS sake

hth

Sherrystrull · 21/08/2023 13:36

I think she was swearing at her own team. Basically saying, I've done my job, don't come and praise me, get back out there and do your job, there's not much time left and I want to win!

Viviennemary · 21/08/2023 13:37

I'm not in the least interested in football but why shouldn't she swear and shout if she wamts to let off steam. She's not in church but on a football pitch. If folk want to worship her let them get on with it.

Lifeomars · 21/08/2023 13:38

Oh FFS!

LBFseBrom · 21/08/2023 13:39

I'd never heard of her until now so thanks for that. I assume she is a Lioness star.

Distantbells789 · 21/08/2023 13:39

So op … you’ve decided that all the years of hard work, skill and commitment of this young sportswoman isn’t worth commenting on, in favour of starting a thread about a few expletives that she shouted in an extremely high pressure situation. OK … 🤔

Bex5490 · 21/08/2023 13:39

Sheruns · 21/08/2023 13:25

They did swear. One of them shouted hijo de puta.

I'd have sworn if I'd saved a penalty in the world cup final! Good for her. As for being a role model, I'd rather my kids grew up thinking swearing in high adrenaline moments is OK than fighting, raping or any of the other things some "role models" do.

Totally agree!

If anything I’d use this to teach my kids about the very very few times when swearing is acceptable like when you score a penalty and give your country a chance at winning the World Cup…as opposed to in the playground when someone pisses you off over Pokémon cards or something!

Early 00's if not earlier. Holly and Jessica were both wearing "Beckham" Man U shirts when Huntley abducted them.

You could have come up with a less shocking example of wearing a football shirt . What the fuck is wrong with you ?

Willyoujustbequiet · 21/08/2023 12:35

Man Utd may unbelievably be letting a rapist back in their first team but you start a thread about a woman swearing?

This. The internal misogyny is strong with the OP.

WeetabixTowels · 21/08/2023 12:24

You’re so right. She should have politely let the goal in and coyly smiled like a Real Lady.

Footballers swear. Get over it. I’m personally more horrified about the diving bastards that were Spain, that’s far more in sportsmanship-like.

Mary Earps is an amazing goalkeeper and an inspiration to young girls - having a DD who has played football for years, it’s so hard to find girls interested in being in goal. She’s changed what it means to be a goalie. She tolerated the nonsense around Nike and her shirt. She can swear all she fucking likes in my view.

This. 100% this. All day long.

As the mother of a young Semi-Pro womens GK - Mary Earps is an inspiration, both on and off the pitch. She was incredible and the fact you're even posting this is downright ridiculous.

And I mean very very few times for them - obviously I’m allowed to swear as much as I like when they’re not around 😂

When you look at some of the shameful behaviour of many young male footballers right now I think a bit of swearing isn't a problem.

And agree the cynical behaviour of the Spanish team yesterday especially during the second half is a bigger problem than an F bomb or two

Labbingtons · 21/08/2023 13:42

OP, and that was your take-home from the England Women’s team getting to the World Cup final?

Jeepers.

IncognitoMam · 21/08/2023 12:35

Oh I wish you'd been in the pub yesterday. Full of young women shouting cunt, fuck off you cheating bastards etc. Some old men in their looking aghast 😂

Were you in my pub? Grin

Her and that English bowler were both disgusting.

And they both lost.

Which English bowler?

BloodyPrime · 21/08/2023 12:29

Yeah, I saw a bloke on Facebook complaining yesterday that her behaviour wasn't 'ladylike'. Quite right. A women's place is to look pretty, keep the house and the kids clean and make sure her husband is happy. Quite what she is even thinking playing football I don't know. All that mud and extra washing she's creating for herself. Disgraceful.

I too saw a bloke saying this on Facebook. My response to the OP is the same as what I said to that man.

Fuck off.

You don't need to be able to speak Spanish

😂

FrenchandSaunders · 21/08/2023 13:48

Blimey the pressure she must have been under yesterday … goal keeper in the final of the World Cup!! A few effs and chuffs are nothing!

wayyour · 21/08/2023 13:49

You don't need to be able to speak Spanish

😀. Good find, that photo!

@MXVIT

ah Op, the patriarchy has really done a number on you hasn’t it?
