To find this time of year really sad

The schools will be re opening soon, the mornings already have that cool damp feel, it's dark at about 8.30, there's Halloween stuff in Tesco and winter clothes starting to appear in shops.
AIBU to feel really miserable at this time of year? I just hate the end of the long, carefree days and the return to bloody boring routine.

OP posts:
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/08/2023 08:56

It’s been cool and damp here most of the summer. I’m hoping September and October will be sunny.

FutureThroughLensOfThePast · 20/08/2023 08:56

I don'y normally mind but this year we have been cheated of summer - it's rained every day since the start of July.

LuciferRising · 20/08/2023 08:56

September and October are my favourite months. The air feels fresh and has that nip, the light in the mornings and evenings is beautiful.

LuciferRising · 20/08/2023 08:57

Can you not make your routine less boring?

SquashPenguin · 20/08/2023 08:57

I would be sad but this summer has been shit. We might as well just get on with autumn now.

ForestGoblin · 20/08/2023 08:58

Autumn is the best season. Summer can suck it.

mykookachew · 20/08/2023 08:59

Yes it can be a bit shit. I try and combat it by making the most of any day light hours and ensure I get out for a decent walk every day (realise this isn't possible for people who have kids at home/work in an office all day)

I'm sure MN will come up with some top tips for getting all hygge with the cosy throws/snuggling/lighting candles 😂

Toddlerteaplease · 20/08/2023 08:59

I do as well. Not keen an autumn as it means winter is round the corner.

HollyGolightly4 · 20/08/2023 09:00

I'm torn every year. I love the opportunity for new beginnings (back to school) and feel it's a much better reset than January, however I hate the dark and cold of winter - and I know it's approaching 😔. Even harder when we've had no summer to speak of this year.

devildeepbluesea · 20/08/2023 09:00

I hate it too. It’ll be time to hunker down and endure the shitness of autumn soon. Drizzle, mist, dark mornings…..ugh I bloody loathe it. I’m kind of ok by winter, but autumn can properly fuck off.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 20/08/2023 09:01

I get called the Cailleach in our family because I positively revel in winter.

I do appreciate each of the seasons, but summer is my least favourite.

Houseplantmad · 20/08/2023 09:01

Me too OP. I love autumn but hate the winter months. Mind you, we’ve had such a shit late spring, and summer hasn’t been much better so it’s going to be worse this year :-(

hylian · 20/08/2023 09:01

Seasons changing is a part of life, you can't stop it, so I just try to accept it and enjoy what is good about any season.

Autumn happens to be my favourite season so I'm quite excited, but when Winter comes around I dread the freezing temperatures and with Summer I hate the long hot days. But I just try to think about Christmas and family time in the Winter, and Summer holidays, sea swimming etc. in the Summer.

Is there not anything you like about Autumn?

The freshness in the air, the lovely colours everywhere, cosy clothes, pumpkin spice??? There must be something good for you about it?

Neverseenbefore · 20/08/2023 09:04

I can see that in summer the days are longer, but not why they are any more care-free.

Berlinlover · 20/08/2023 09:04

I had major surgery four weeks ago and was quite ill before it so I’ve missed out on this summer completely. By the time I’ve recovered it will probably be October just in time for the clocks going back and the cold and dark days. YANBU

Broodywuz · 20/08/2023 09:05

Yes I get you OP. It's definitely the back to school routing kicking in and the thought of winter coming.

the80sweregreat · 20/08/2023 09:06

I saw big tins of sweets / chocs for sale in a big tesco last week , so before long the school uniform aisles will be taken over by Christmas bits I guess or Halloween stuff
It's already getting dark earlier too

SchoolBlazers · 20/08/2023 09:08

Agree. Spring and Summer are the best times of the year. Nights getting darker are not a nice thing, imho. But you will get the "hot choccie and snuggling under blankies" crowd along shortly to tell you how many sleeps their are until "Crimbo". 🙄

Squirrelblanket · 20/08/2023 09:08

I like each of the seasons so I can find something to look forward to every time it changes. My favourite is the change from summer to autumn.

I do feel cheated by not having a proper summer this year though.

Rockfordpeach · 20/08/2023 09:08

I love the Ber months, feels like a fresh start and I enjoy the colder weather far more than the warm weather

TheSaltyPath · 20/08/2023 09:08

I bloody love it. The arrival of M&S' 'time to give up on summer, folks' jumper and corduroy skirt displays is balm to my autumnal soul.

elsbelsx · 20/08/2023 09:09

I love it! Autumn/winter are the best months!!

RaininSummer · 20/08/2023 09:09

Depressed as we haven't had summer this year

CandleWick4 · 20/08/2023 09:10

I love autumn, probably my favourite season. I love the kids going back to school in their new uniforms and clean looking shoes, I like darker evenings, cold mornings, pumpkin spice candles, and we have a local park with huge tree lined paths and when the leaves start to turn it looks like a painting.
Im a bit of a hermit at heart I think so darker cosy evenings are heaven to me!
Plus this summer has been awful, happy to see the back of this humid/a little bit warm/mostly wet crap weather.

madeinmanc · 20/08/2023 09:10

@Berlinlover I didn't have anything so serious as surgery but I was moderately seriously ill for most of June so I know where you're coming from. What made things worse was that I had the opportunity to choose when to have the treatment for what was wrong and I chose June to get it out of the way asap and have the rest of the summer clear!

If I win the lottery I'll pay for autumn breaks in the sun for us both!
