To find this time of year really sad

The schools will be re opening soon, the mornings already have that cool damp feel, it's dark at about 8.30, there's Halloween stuff in Tesco and winter clothes starting to appear in shops.
AIBU to feel really miserable at this time of year? I just hate the end of the long, carefree days and the return to bloody boring routine.

YANBU to find it miserable, if that’s your thing.

YABU if you’re cross that some people prefer winter though. I’m always baffled by how much people on Mumsnet get worked up and disdainful about other people’s preferences for seasons.

I don’t know what your situation is, but I don’t have any kids and I work full time, so summer is no more carefree than any other time.

Yrpeoplesoannoying · 21/08/2023 20:35

I totally feel you

I love the autumn and the winter, so never feel like that. It’s the period after the Christmas break that makes me feel shitty.

That post Christmas bleakness is actually one of my favourite times of year! I hate Christmas, it stresses me terribly and it seems to start on 1 November so I start to get antsy on the run up to Halloween too. Then finally it's Jan and I can breathe again and live a quiet routine life for a few weeks. What irritates me is whenever I tell people how I feel about Christmas it's eye roll or bah humbug so I just say nothing anymore, but yet I'm supposed to listen to everyone else moan about their January blues.

Duechristmas · 21/08/2023 20:37

I'm the same, I always feel this way at the end of the summer.

LuckySantangelo35 · 21/08/2023 20:38

Also, question for all you cosy winter lovers …

cost of living crisis?! Having to pay so much to heat your homes?

Surely that must factor into things

FoodFann · 21/08/2023 20:40

I’m the opposite. Summer feels like chaos, midday walks are too hot, and the fields are too overgrown to walk the dog. I love autumn and winter.

BettyOBarley · 21/08/2023 20:42

Sept to Christmas is my favourite time of year.

January to spring is my worst. Just cold cold cold and not much going on.

I live in Spain so more worried about the AC cost in summer rather than the fairly low heating cost in winter. Although the houses are freezing here in Jan and especially Feb. You’re literally chilled to the bone. You go outside to warm up!!

DC2008 · 21/08/2023 21:52

I think part of the problem is the supermarkets obsession with bringing in Halloween and Christmas stock uber early. Why can’t we just enjoy summer (good or bad) without autumn and winter being peddled to us in July?

Disturbia81 · 21/08/2023 22:32

madeinmanc · 20/08/2023 09:14

we had a few days in june that were boiling

We really didn't. Warm at best.

We definitely did in Yorkshire, June was a scorcher.

I'm an Autumn woman and usually desperate for that nip in the air returning in late sept but not as gagging for it this year due to all the cooler temps. I've worn my coat and boots most of July and August which has been strange.

I think well the seasons come every year so why not think positively about them all, instead of being miserable for months on end?

Yeah the cosy haters.. must be jealousy that they can enjoy it so much.

I love the return to autumn and routine

I struggle with the heat in summer, and our family much prefer our usual routine

Couldn't agree more. It's almost as if the supermarkets are wishing our lives away for us. Mind you, I don't feel half as sad when I spot creme eggs in January😅

@Yellowlegobrick

what routine do you have in autumn and winter that you can’t have in spring and summer?

Awittyfool · 21/08/2023 22:49

Yes definitely the over communalism of Autumn and Winter. Absolutely yes to fresh walks, picking berries, warming food etc. But the reality it’s all about buying artifical, hot flavoured drinks , expensive candles, blankets/slackest/ oodies and REALLY expensive winter clothes. And sodding Christmas, I love Christmas in December. Not keen on doing it in November because the supermarkets have moved into Valentines Day / Easter the week before.

@Yellowlegobrick

I imagine she means she prefers being in the school/ sport routine than in the summer where you have to plan everything separately. I get that tbh. With pre-teens summer can feel like mental load overload whereas Sep-Dec we all tick over nicely. There’s enough routine that the downtimes feel nice and relaxing whereas in summer I sometimes feel like it’s a full time job to keep them off screens.

mummysherlock · 22/08/2023 01:32

Autumn is actually my favourite season. The summer holidays are always quite manic with having to re-arrange work around childcare etc and although the downtime is nice for the first couple of weeks by the end of it I crave the return to structure and routine that going back to school brings.
The DC also get excited about moving up a year at school and going back to their clubs.
I like all the lovely colours, the fact it isn’t too hot or too cold, and I’m a bit of a big kid when it comes to Halloween and bonfire night. DC’s are happy to see the Halloween merch in the shops and are already discussing this years costumes. Oh and it also means illuminated carnival season where I live.

Springbaby2023 · 22/08/2023 02:40

I definitely feel it more this year because the weather has been so rubbish. But I always find the reality of it better than the thought.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 22/08/2023 02:52

I love fall and winter. Cosiness, hot cocoa, Christmas and Halloween..

I suffer SAD from too much light. Summer is depressing for me.

Seabreeze18 · 22/08/2023 06:26

I’m the same OP! Love summer so much and hate the thought of winter! I get depressed just thinking about it!

FutureThroughLensOfThePast · 20/08/2023 08:56

I don'y normally mind but this year we have been cheated of summer - it's rained every day since the start of July.

Yup summer was 2 warm days in June I think.

I don't actually mind this time of year but I do feel cheated about a lack of warm dry days. Seem to think 2021 was similar

Well everyone is different aren’t they? I actually find summer depressing - hot stuffy days, hayfever, everywhere is absolutely packed out, waking up early every morning because of the brightness blasting through the windows …

I look forward to the colder days, dark nights/mornings and the ability to actually visit places without being stuck in crowds

I love this time of year! I love the fresh feel in the mornings. I always feel that September is a time of new starts. I like autumn, it’s beautiful and I love the build up to Christmas

I could have written that !

SarahJane796 · 22/08/2023 08:19

I was talking to a teacher friend of mine the other day and she said that she hates the first day of the summer holidays as she knows she’s has to go back at the end.
I know people think long holidays are amazing but the cost of everything is so much that it is limited. At least with a different job you have a chance of breaking up the year in different ways - after kids finish school.
