To find this time of year really sad

Beverlysparty · 20/08/2023 08:54

The schools will be re opening soon, the mornings already have that cool damp feel, it's dark at about 8.30, there's Halloween stuff in Tesco and winter clothes starting to appear in shops.
AIBU to feel really miserable at this time of year? I just hate the end of the long, carefree days and the return to bloody boring routine.

I agree @Beverlysparty this time of year makes me get my jumpers ready cos winters coming. I esp hate the thought of darker mornings that are on their way.

But I think Sept might be warmer than we think!

I do wish they'd arrange a bank holiday in Oct /Nov to cheer us all up! Maybe bonfire night could be a bank holiday!!!

backtoworktomorrow2 · 20/08/2023 09:42

Yes, I always get this sad dressed feeling when the children go back to school in September. I can't explain it but every year it happens.

megletthesecond · 20/08/2023 09:43

Yanbu. It's been a cold summer and DD is a school refuser. September - April is miserable.

Gingerlygreen · 20/08/2023 09:44

The colder seasons never used to bother me but it seems that since I got into my 40's that I'm affected by the dark nights and grey days more. My mood is definitely worse when it's cloudy.

SoupDragon · 20/08/2023 09:44

I get this. Especially when the summer has been grey and wet like most of August has been. There hasn't been nearly enough sun to see me through the misery of autumn/winter/early spring.

Tumbleweed101 · 20/08/2023 09:45

When I worked term time I loved the long summer with my children and dreaded the return to work, school and routine so I understand how you feel.

However now my children are older and I work all year I don’t get that lovely carefree time any more so it’s just been endless slog all summer and my youngest - who has been off school - moaning about being bored all summer as she’s been mostly home alone.

I’m quite looking forward to Autumn.

I have a theory that this is the time of year when we are evolved to gather the harvest, hunt, store up provisions for the winter etc. but the majority of us don't do that in our modern society, so we feel rather lost and unfulfilled at this time of year.
Maybe balance it with prepping for the colder weather in little ways?

Does starting my Christmas shopping count? Blush

Bubop · 20/08/2023 09:45

I like all the seasons for different reasons but Autumn is my favourite. Watching the leaves change, getting cosy after a long walk, knowing Christmas is around the corner…

I absolutely hate Indian summers and snow in spring though. I’m used to rain in summer, but properly unseasonable weather makes me miserable.

Pigeon31 · 20/08/2023 09:46

I tend to book my holiday for Sept/ Oct which helps a lot with that

Mamette · 20/08/2023 09:46

I don’t mind really, I certainly don’t find the summer carefree as the DC clubs are short and awkward hours.

I find it easier to get dressed for work in the Autumn too.

madeinmanc · 20/08/2023 09:47

The time for new beginnings isn't September, it's March/April around the equinox.

Tessisme · 20/08/2023 09:40

I wonder if the preference for one season over others is anything to do with which month we're born in, or is that just ridiculous?!!

My birthday is in Spring and I prefer Autumn/Winter. But I prefer general festivities that apply to everyone to my birthday - ie Christmas, Halloween, Bonfire Night, as I like it when there's an atmosphere of celebration.

Coastalcreeksider · 20/08/2023 09:48

mykookachew · 20/08/2023 08:59

Yes it can be a bit shit. I try and combat it by making the most of any day light hours and ensure I get out for a decent walk every day (realise this isn't possible for people who have kids at home/work in an office all day)

I'm sure MN will come up with some top tips for getting all hygge with the cosy throws/snuggling/lighting candles 😂

Don't forget the hot choccy with the cosy throws, snuggles and candles 🙄

12roundsofwhitelowfatspread · 20/08/2023 09:48

I think we all have seasons we love that make us feel alive, and “ugh” seasons. I made a conscious gritted teeth effort to be really positive about the season I usually hate this year - and who knew, I enjoyed it way more than usual. Not all of it, but much more than I expected.

I find it helps to book ahead a few things to look forward to - for me it’s a day trip to see a friend who’s moved away, or learning something new. It helps me feel more anchored when other things are changing.

nopuppiesallowed · 20/08/2023 09:49

June was the hottest in record in the UK. I remember trying to plant seeds in bone dry soil and having to water the veg plot with grey water.(washing up water etc)...Children were in school, so that sucked but it was boiling hot the year I took O levels and A levels. It's English weather....

yogasaurus · 20/08/2023 09:49

FutureThroughLensOfThePast · 20/08/2023 08:56

I don'y normally mind but this year we have been cheated of summer - it's rained every day since the start of July.

This. I’d usually be ready for a change on seasons, but it’s been autumn all summer

marblesthecat · 20/08/2023 09:50

I absolutely love it. This has felt like the longest summer of my life listening to the kids screeching outside until dark. I;ve never looked forward to autumn/winter as much as I am this year. Plus now DD is a bit older I really enjoy Halloween.

BlissBlakeney · 20/08/2023 09:51

In fairness, the posters who talk about snuggling up on the couch with 'hot choc' etc are often the same ones who call anyone who doesn't like Christmas a 'misery' or a 'grinch'. Never seems to strike them that for some people Christmas is a time of loneliness, or exacerbation of grief, of stress over money difficulties etc

Good points there, OP. I think the Tyranny of Xmas starting late August spoils winter for many. If we could revert to it being a short festival of light and feasting (not in an overly indulgent way) it would be more enjoyable or bearable depending on circumstances.

Traxz · 20/08/2023 09:52

You're wishing your life away, worrying about what's coming instead of enjoying where you are

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 20/08/2023 09:53

Well, I hate the back-to-school bit for various reasons (although I used to like it), but I love autumn and the lead-up to Christmas. I don’t like it starting so early, but try to ignore it until December!

I love our changing seasons and suppose we’re lucky where we are as the summer hasn’t been too bad and there have been some pretty hot days.

Autumn’s my favourite though - the leaves falling and the beautiful colours, the air getting colder…

Oblomov23 · 20/08/2023 09:54

Yep. Plus as pp says being cheated of a summer really seriously pisses me off. Is this what global warming now is, shitty summer of rain for 2 months, with no real heat or sun?

madeinmanc · 20/08/2023 09:54

The things that gets me about the Christmas fascists is that I believe in God but if I mention something about it (rare) I meet incredulous reactions. But oh yeah, you try and shove your plastic tat down my throat for months when you don't even believe in him! The sheer hypocrisy is mind boggling.

Tessisme · 20/08/2023 09:35

There was a similar thread about this a little while back and I wholeheartedly agreed with the OP. I always feel a little bit melancholy as summer draws to a close. I used to walk on the local towpath a lot and would notice the vegetation starting to droop around mid August and it made my mood similarly droop! I'm much happier once we're well into September and I've accepted that autumn is here and brings its own particular loveliness.

Absolutely this, the melancholy is horrible but I'm ok once it's here. We've definitely been cheated a bit this year of summer though!

Middleagedmeangirls · 20/08/2023 09:55

I love this time of year. The heat of the summer is over and it's a new beginning.

i particularly love it this year - 2 weeks ago, out of the blue, I developed a life threatening condition and had emergency surgery. From perfect health to the operating table in under 36 hours. It was terrifying. Thanks to god and wonderful medical staff I'm recovering well and excited to start rebuilding my health and strength again.

This is my second chance and I'm not wasting it.

Yeah I thought that, it was hot early summer but everyone seems to have forgotten about it. I think we all need to get used to things happening earlier in the year than we expect weather wise.
