To find this time of year really sad

Beverlysparty · 20/08/2023 08:54

The schools will be re opening soon, the mornings already have that cool damp feel, it's dark at about 8.30, there's Halloween stuff in Tesco and winter clothes starting to appear in shops.
AIBU to feel really miserable at this time of year? I just hate the end of the long, carefree days and the return to bloody boring routine.

I do as well. Not keen an autumn as it means winter is round the corner.

Same here. Plus the endless hype about Halloween and Christmas.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/08/2023 08:40

whereas in summer I sometimes feel like it’s a full time job to keep them off screens.

God yes, I've almost given up by this stage of the summer.

I genuinely cannot see how anyone could love dark nights and the cold. It’s miserable and oppressive

I genuinely cannot see why on MN people cannot see that other people might have different preferences to them.

Redissuereader · 22/08/2023 10:47

I've voted that yanbu but only because it's personal choice. I used to be really down about it, but then read an article about how the French 'Le Grand Retour' and how they view it as a kind of new year. How it's much easier to take up resolutions when the weather is still ok and by the time you get to the view dark days you've got in to a routine and it's easier to stick to. About appreciating the change of seasons, the whole article was basically about practicing mindfulness and gratitude.

I lost a child a few years ago in November and autumn always brings dark moods and makes me retreat to home and not want to go anywhere or see anyone and to just cuddle my other children tighter so it's good to get set in a routine before that mood takes hold too hard - but then I also think it's healthy to embrace that too. Life is all about balance, there are pros and cons to all seasons. We're lucky to have them.

@LaDamaDeElche

come on, getting up early in the cold and dark, having to defrost your car for ages, having to pay out loads on heating bills - how can that REALLY be anyone’s preference genuinely?!

ItcanbeDone · 22/08/2023 11:04

Tbh I love it, its been rubbish because of how muggy n humid its been so I am longing for cooler evenings, layers, conker collecting and blackberry picking with the kids...though I do home ed my 5 kids so we change up our routine constantly. But going for long walks in September and getting ready for Halloween, which will be my baby twins first, I love it. We were also lucky though because we went away in May week before half term, it was cheap, hot and sunny, and so quiet...May felt like July should have been!

LaDamaDeElche · 22/08/2023 11:15

Not everyone drives, people prefer colder weather to humid sticky weather suffering for months with allergies, not everyone lives in the U.K. so for those people they are living in horrifically hot countries with worse bills for AC and their countries on fire in the summer, some people can afford heating bills, some people sleep better when it isn't light at 4:30am, some people like the festivals associated with autumn and winter, some people prefer to wear winter clothes than summer clothes etc etc.

You could equally take the negatives of summer and say that.

How can anyone not realise that some people have different preferences?

You sound ridiculous.

Haven't we all. Even I'm spending more time on screens 😂

Because it is!

how can it be anyone’s preference to be sweating your tits off surrounded by crowds of people everywhere you go?

volebasker · 22/08/2023 13:43

I'm sure MN will come up with some top tips for getting all hygge with the cosy throws/snuggling/lighting candles 😂

Don't forget the hot chocolate and curling up with a good book

Seriously? You think people don’t know other people think differently?

This is a thread discussing feeling sad about the end of Summer. Absolutely fine to love Autumn and Winter but you need to explain otherwise what’s the point. You get don’t get to top trump people just because you think differently. There’s no right or wrong with a preference for seasons but just happen to be on a thread for summer lovers.

No need to be rude calling others ridiculous.

Yes it's a terrible cliche - still love it though! Dark rainy or windy night, wearing my warmest PJs and big bedsocks, on sofa under a duvet, watching TV or reading, snuggled up with cat – it's genuinely enjoyable for me. I understand not for everyone, and winter can be a nightmare in terms of heating bills etc. But there's a reason "hygge" is a thing (though I don't go around actually using that word...)

LovelyIssues · 22/08/2023 18:39

Autumn is the best season!!

It’s usually called la (grande) rentrée and yes, this is very much how I view the new year.

I’m so sorry for your loss Flowers

Disturbia81 · 22/08/2023 19:22

I genuinely love the cold, the rain, the gloom. The dark evenings. Sorry 😆
Also love the other seasons.
Best to find positives in them all, they're not going anywhere.

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/08/2023 19:34

Lol what are these "long carefree days" of which you speak? Sounds like something from an Enid Blyton book.

August, and often July, are terrible for weather in England. September is always better by MILES.

Early September and back to school is the very best time of year imo, can't wait.

Awittyfool · 22/08/2023 20:58

I don’t mind a stormy night or a cold crisp day. I like Christmas and my birthday is January ( which I love).

It’s just that all the other multiple components of winter make it so depressing. The sheer expense of it. The extra work involved in keeping everyone/ thing dry, warm and safe in the dark/ fog/ rain/ice. That’s why summer is carefree.

Also who said it’s less busy in winter? Everywhere in December is chocker blocker - restaurants, pubs, shops, attractions , all full up.

SomewhereWithSomeone · 22/08/2023 21:09

@Awittyfool

Look at what the person said that I was replying to. They clearly didn’t accept that others thought differently. 🙄🙄🙄

Awittyfool · 22/08/2023 21:43

@SomewhereWithSomeone I did, I quoted them.

I heard them not understand though , not that they didn’t believe you.

Ladybird69 · 22/08/2023 23:17

I usually love this time of year but this year I’m feeling blue, we haven’t had summer yet! I’m not ready for autumn.

SomewhereWithSomeone · 23/08/2023 00:20

@Awittyfool

well you obviously didn’t read well as I didn’t say I didn’t like summer. In fact in an earlier post I said I did feel a bit sad with dinner coming to an end.

People that cant ‘understaaaaaaaand’ others may like different things do sound ridiculous.

Johnisafckface · 23/08/2023 01:11

I’m the opposite. Autumn is my favorite time of the year. Where I live it’s so hot during the summer it’s miserable. Bugs everywhere, hot day and night, i hate it 😂 looking forward to the cool weather, and wearing clothes without being hot and not as many bugs. I will actually go outside and enjoy it instead of sweating in misery the whole time 😂

SomewhereWithSomeone · 23/08/2023 01:16

*summer not dinner. Although.......🤣

coxesorangepippin · 07/09/2023 02:27

Summer:
Bug bites
Sweating
Sun cream
Eating bbq , salads etc, too hot for stodge

Winter:
Dark nights
Have to wear more clothes
Less daylight
Put in weight cos of all the stodge

Etc etc ad nauseum

We're all different and have different preferences
