To find this time of year really sad

Beverlysparty · 20/08/2023 08:54

The schools will be re opening soon, the mornings already have that cool damp feel, it's dark at about 8.30, there's Halloween stuff in Tesco and winter clothes starting to appear in shops.
AIBU to feel really miserable at this time of year? I just hate the end of the long, carefree days and the return to bloody boring routine.

Autumn is lovely though. You still get sunny days, the nip in the air is refreshing and I quite like dark evenings - you can see the stars and justify putting the fire on.

OddBoots · 20/08/2023 09:11

Spring is my favourite month, followed by autumn - the times of not too hot and not too cold - so I'm quite content to feel autumn pulling in. But if you are someone who prefers summer I can appreciate you feel differently - especially as this summer all the heat was in June.

We can still hope for a bit more warm weather before autumn actually arrives though.

wutheringkites · 20/08/2023 09:11

I normally enjoy the change of seasons but I feel cheated of summer this year, we've barely used our garden since June.

CandleWick4 · 20/08/2023 09:12

SchoolBlazers · 20/08/2023 09:08

Agree. Spring and Summer are the best times of the year. Nights getting darker are not a nice thing, imho. But you will get the "hot choccie and snuggling under blankies" crowd along shortly to tell you how many sleeps their are until "Crimbo". 🙄

Funny how there are so many lovely comments on this thread on both sides and then someone comes along with a condescending eye roll at those who like winter and Christmas. Must be exhausting being so put out by others happiness.

the80sweregreat · 20/08/2023 09:12

I was relieved that this summer wasn't mega hot , we had a few days in june that were boiling and that was enough for me.
However , I know many like it hot so they probably feel cheated it has been a bit hit and miss this year and a lot more rain etc.

aSofaNearYou · 20/08/2023 09:12

I feel the opposite. All the exciting things happen at this time of year, I'm perfectly happy for summer to end.

madeinmanc · 20/08/2023 09:13

There's also a socio-economic aspect to this. It's all very well to wax lyrical about pumpkins and dark eveningsand rain but it tells me one thing: you're not struggling financially.

For an enormous amount of people autumn and winter mean cold and dark and damp, possibly even physical pain and illness, due to inadequate heating and energy prices.

madeinmanc · 20/08/2023 09:14

we had a few days in june that were boiling

We really didn't. Warm at best.

RicherThanYews · 20/08/2023 09:14

Usuallt I would agree but this year we have an actual back door and not a gaping hole in the wall of the house so we won't freeze to death.
Look on the bright (warm) side and all that op.

TheSkull · 20/08/2023 09:14

My favourite time of the year approaching. Autumn then the lead-up to Christmas. Fab

twinkletoesimnot · 20/08/2023 09:14

I'm with you OP.
Only 2 weeks left of the holidays and I'm being forced to start preparing.
The summer and summer hols are bliss.
I hate the winter - cold, dark, muddy, not enough hours in the day. Only seeing my ponies with a head torch on.
I'm not a fan of Christmas. Bleurgh!

aSofaNearYou · 20/08/2023 09:15

I also hate it when it doesn't get dark til 10/11pm, which everyone else seems to love. It makes me feel like I can't go to bed early if I'm tired - my brain associates it having been dark for a while with evening so if it's still light or just got dark, it feels too early to me. Not overly keen on it being dark at 4 either, but I want it to at least be dark by 9.

PickUpTheDogAndBone · 20/08/2023 09:16

I disagree.

I detest the month of August. There's no routine, work and appointments are affected, feels like everything is in limbo.

September is always the month of new beginnings and anticipation. That new exercise book feeling Smile

madeinmanc · 20/08/2023 09:17

It's really only about new beginnings if you're involved in education for some reason.

Jamtartforme · 20/08/2023 09:17

I love autumn so will say YABU 😉 but I can see it must be quite gutting to be a summer person in this country and I can also see why dark evenings and colder weather are depressing to some.

Totally agree!

BlissBlakeney · 20/08/2023 09:19

It’ll be time to hunker down and endure the shitness of autumn soon

Autumn is glorious in the UK! And winter means our equally glorious Spring will be next <channels Pollyanna>

There's a really good book about the importance of winter - "Wintering - the power of Rest and Retreat in difficult times"

TheChosenTwo · 20/08/2023 09:20

I actually really like all the seasons but like many I feel totally robbed of a summer this year. We are just packing to go on our holiday and I’m desperate for a couple of weeks of sun, heat, relaxation! It’s rubbish working when it’s really hot but the lovely parts are finishing work and being able to go out and do nice things, walk to the pub, paddle in the stream, take ds to the park to kick a ball about, hanging out in the garden, bbqs, having people round to join in for bbqs, just feels a lot more sociable. Of course you can still socialise in the colder months and we do, but it feels better when the weather is good.
I do however prefer the beach in the winter.
And I can’t moan today as we’ve woken up to a semi blue sky and although the day is scheduled to be overcast it’s still set to be dry and the sun comes out in full from 5pm, we are going to have a bbq and make the most of it.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 20/08/2023 09:21

Autumn is my favourite month. However the immediate back to school I struggle with. Another year older, another year closer to the end of their childhoods.

AzureBlue99 · 20/08/2023 09:21

I plan on hunkering down this winter. The darkness is depressing for me (and yes, the mornings are getting too dark already) but I am going to use my daylight hours wisely, making sure I get that daylight to the back of my eyeballs! Plus saving money up rather than spending to alleviate boredom - I want to come into Spring with some dosh for a great holiday. Using my National Trust card to get amongst nature. Moving my fat arse more. Nice hearty food, salads begone! Get through my reading pile, no need to buy any books until Spring. It's coming. No point in fighting it. I prefer our weather to extremes or sameness that you get elsewhere.

AlloftheTime · 20/08/2023 09:23

LuciferRising · 20/08/2023 08:56

September and October are my favourite months. The air feels fresh and has that nip, the light in the mornings and evenings is beautiful.

^ this
there is something to love in every season.

different smells, trees changing, sky at night. It’s new moon this week so let go of what you can’t alter and look for what you can enjoy right now 😉

OneCup · 20/08/2023 09:23

I like the autumn so I'm fine on this front but definitely not looking forward to going back to school or to the winter!

CoreopsisEverywhere · 20/08/2023 09:24

I find this last couple of weeks in August a bit depressing, particularly this year when we haven’t had any nice weather for weeks. It’s the what is that’s it feeling. Will there be any more opportunities to eat outside, read my book in an hammock etc.

However I love autumn and the promise of new starts in September. I think a warm sunny day in Autumn is such a glorious thing and I will appreciate it all the more for this meh weather now.

In fairness, the posters who talk about snuggling up on the couch with 'hot choc' etc are often the same ones who call anyone who doesn't like Christmas a 'misery' or a 'grinch'.
Never seems to strike them that for some people Christmas is a time of loneliness, or exacerbation of grief, of stress over money difficulties etc.

Instead they just decide to call them names because their experience of that time of year is different to their own.

I love this time of year! Even more so as an adult because I don't have to go back to school.

But I get it because I feel the same about new years eve - it has that old sinking Sunday Evening Not Done My Homework feeling. Which I also enjoy not getting as an adult Grin
