To find this time of year really sad

The schools will be re opening soon, the mornings already have that cool damp feel, it's dark at about 8.30, there's Halloween stuff in Tesco and winter clothes starting to appear in shops.
AIBU to feel really miserable at this time of year? I just hate the end of the long, carefree days and the return to bloody boring routine.

I don't really feel like we've had a summer this year. Normally I would do loads with my children this year we've hardly done anything. I'm half expecting the to be lovely the moment school starts and then rain on weekends until winter 😩

doroda · 20/08/2023 09:56

It's this bit right now I don't like...it feels like summer is over (we had our holiday abroad at the end of July, and the weather in the UK is so changeable) but it's still over 2.5 weeks until DD goes back to school. She has ASD and fares much better with the school routine. Roll on September, happy to embrace Autumn!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 20/08/2023 09:56

I love autumn but as it creeps into winter and Xmas I start feeling meh.Not a Christmas fan at all but unsure why.

illiterato · 20/08/2023 09:57

I love September- November. We quite often get some nice days and warm weather and on the south coast it’s not as windy as in spring. Wind, especially when gusty, gives me the rage 🤣. Plus I quite like the kids being at school if I’m honest.

Pineapples198 · 20/08/2023 09:57

I find the summer the worst part of the year personally. 6 weeks off school. Trying to juggle work and childcare. Struggling to find the balance between “we have so much planned and the children are annoyed and don’t want to do it all” versus “we have nothing planned and the children are bored”. I always feel depressed in august. Like I am a rubbish mum who should be enjoying the holidays but isn’t.
the run up to Christmas is my favourite time of year

SchoolBlazers · 20/08/2023 09:57

I the Tyranny of Xmas starting late August spoils winter for many.

The Marie Curie charity shop in my village had their Christmas cards out on 7th August. Someone posted pictures of the seasonal tat aisle in Home Bargains on 5th August, already full of plastic Christmas shite.

However much you like Christmas (and i'm not a fan), having a Christmas which starts in the first week of August and lasts 5 months is fucking ridiculous.

There's also a socio-economic aspect to this. It's all very well to wax lyrical about pumpkins and dark eveningsand rain but it tells me one thing: you're not struggling financially.

For an enormous amount of people autumn and winter mean cold and dark and damp, possibly even physical pain and illness, due to inadequate heating and energy prices.

True. I highly doubt that those in financial straits are looking forward to having to have the heating on, and worrying about paying said bills. Especially when the lights have to be turned on by early afternoon as it gets so dark. Not so enjoyable if people are having to sit in the cold.

I don’t mind it if it’s contained but I hate the way it takes over a quarter of the year in the U.K. and December becomes a total write off in terms of getting anything done.

Tangled123 · 20/08/2023 10:00

I hate Autumn at the best of times, but I’ve missed the best of the last 3 summers thanks to a combination of revision and being pregnant/post partum so dreading it even more than usual this year. Even the year before that was the first Covid Summer, so still not the same.
I get huge cabin fever with being stuck indoors all the time in Autumn - outside is too wet, cold and dark. I also don’t like the obligation and pressure that comes with Christmas, I’d love to give it a miss this year.
We have a holiday planned for September so hoping that will lift my spirits a bit though.

I just start feeling low and can't shake it.I have no bad memories of Xmas but it makes me feel unsettled

SadAndMushyAndComplicated · 20/08/2023 10:00

I love it. I very much follow the pattern of the academic year rather than the calendar so for me we are approaching New Year’s Day with all the promise and potential of a new year. January-February is the worst for me. I never make resolutions then or attempt the horror of dry January!

MillWood85 · 20/08/2023 10:00

Autumn is my favourite season and it feels very autumnal already in the mornings here in Gloucestershire. We usually get pretty decent weather from September to mid October so I'm hoping this year is usual.

It's the short dark days in January/February that drag my mood down and I've got some daylight bulbs now that really help.

Awittyfool · 20/08/2023 10:01

Neverseenbefore · 20/08/2023 09:04

I can see that in summer the days are longer, but not why they are any more care-free.

Summer is easy.
You don’t need to wear shoes or many clothes. No one thinks anything of half naked people fat or thin.

it’s cheaper. Less food needed, lots of food in season, clothes are cheaper, easier to walk and bike everywhere. Clothes can be dry outside in hours.

You can see! I struggle driving at night. I really appreciate long days.

Basically autumn and winter make everything that bit harder. I don’t think we even get Autumn anymore. It used to start with back to school and end on Bonfire night . It used to be a defined season, fruit picking, country shows, a sense of getting outside whilst you can before winter. Now it’s become just one long countdown to a very commercial Christmas, with Halloween thrown in just so people know when they can get the Christmas decs up.

SomewhereWithSomeone · 20/08/2023 10:02

I always feel a bit sad when the kids are back to school/college/uni and the carefree summer days. That’s life though and it’ll soon come round again.

I find planning lots of nice things between now and Xmas helps and I love Xmas.

WaltzingWaters · 20/08/2023 10:02

I’m looking forward to schools going back and everywhere being quieter (but I live in Cornwall so roads are hectic in summer hols). I’m also REALLY HOPING for a sunny September after the summer has been so rainy 🤞🏼🤞🏼

UndercoverCop · 20/08/2023 10:03

It's still August, September is usually quite nice, enjoy what's left rather than looking forward to the dark winter!

AnneShirleysNewDress · 20/08/2023 10:03

Spring and Autumn are my favourite seasons, and i'm not a huge fan of the heat but even I'm disappointed by Summer this year. We came home from holiday on 12th July and we've had 4 nice days since then.

aSofaNearYou · 20/08/2023 10:05

Summer is easy.

In summer you need to faff around with suncream and hats, worry the kids will overheat without water etc. I find it much easier to just bung a coat on them in cooler weather.

Minttee · 20/08/2023 10:05

I love September- December but absolutely hate January- March.
I do feel like my mood is lower with no sunshine. Does anyone use a lamp for sad or any tips apart from holidays abroad which I can't afford!

Sloth66 · 20/08/2023 10:07

I don’t like Summer, Autumn is my favourite season

I agree. But I remember being devoured on another thread when I suggested that the ever lengthening of the Christmas season just dilutes the excitement, and I preferred it when the run up started in late Nov/early Dec. Apparently it was none of my business and I could just ignore it if I wanted to!

As others have said it would be less galling if we’d actually had a summer but given we didn’t get one YANBU and I can’t help feeling cheated and I’m dreading winter. I get a bit of SAD in the winter months but this year I can feel it creeping in already

Usou · 20/08/2023 10:07

Every day is a gift.

Appreciate it all - those beautiful mellow autumn colours, the first frost, the run up to Christmas.

Winter can drag a bit, but we can see the days lengthen around the end of January.

I have a friend with stage 4 cancer who will be lucky to see any of the above.

SchoolBlazers · 20/08/2023 10:10

Not this summer you haven't. We had a couple of warmish days when the kids were in school in June. As soon as the holidays started last week of June (Scotland) we have had rain and muggy humidity. No danger of needing sun cream or extra water.

Daisy523 · 20/08/2023 10:10

YANBU at all! It’s not your ideal time of year and that’s completely fine.

For me, my favorite time of year is August - December. Cooler days, cozy nights, Halloween, Christmas, etc. I absolutely hate Summer (allergies, too hot, etc) so this is where I’m most comfortable.
