To find this time of year really sad

Beverlysparty · 20/08/2023 08:54

The schools will be re opening soon, the mornings already have that cool damp feel, it's dark at about 8.30, there's Halloween stuff in Tesco and winter clothes starting to appear in shops.
AIBU to feel really miserable at this time of year? I just hate the end of the long, carefree days and the return to bloody boring routine.

In summer you need to faff around with suncream and hats, worry the kids will overheat without water etc.

Not this summer you haven't. We had a couple of warmish days when the kids were in school in June. As soon as the holidays started last week of June (Scotland) we have had rain and muggy humidity. No danger of needing sun cream or extra water.

Suncream should be worn everyday, even if the sun is not visible.

SchoolBlazers · 20/08/2023 10:12

And you can't ignore the Christmas tat in August/September, can you @Beverlysparty ? I am actively boycotting Home Bargains because of it, which is fine because everything they sell I can get somewhere else. But give it 6 weeks and ALL the supermarkets and shops will have their festive displays and unless you become a total hermit, it's everywhere.

jlpth · 20/08/2023 10:14

There are another 11 days of august!!

SoupDragon · 20/08/2023 10:14

I hate the word "cosy" it brings out an irrational rage in me. The idea is great, the reality generally doesn't live up to the hype.

AlmostTotallyFake · 20/08/2023 10:14

What long carefree days? More like days spent in work whilst the kids are home and me wishing I had more AL to spend time with them. Or even worse, when they were little spending 2 months salary on childcare to cover the summer holidays.
I enjoy the sun when we get it but most people are still working and trying to juggle kids, it isn't some sunny endless break.

Yeah but that's the point - people are complaining this summer wasn't summery enough, so their ideal must be the kind of weather where you do have to bother about those things.

And we've had plenty of days where we've had to where I live!

Every day is a gift.

Appreciate it all - those beautiful mellow autumn colours, the first frost, the run up to Christmas.

Winter can drag a bit, but we can see the days lengthen around the end of January.

I have a friend with stage 4 cancer who will be lucky to see any of the above.

Those are lovely positive thoughts. I'm sorry about your friend. That's so toughFlowers

In fairness, the posters who talk about snuggling up on the couch with 'hot choc' etc are often the same ones who call anyone who doesn't like Christmas a 'misery' or a 'grinch'.
Never seems to strike them that for some people Christmas is a time of loneliness, or exacerbation of grief, of stress over money difficulties etc.

Instead they just decide to call them names because their experience of that time of year is different to their own.

But no-one did that. They were just sharing the potential positives. Probably with a view to being helpful. And the other poster decided to have a snipe anyway.

crimsonlake · 20/08/2023 10:16

I agree we have not had much of a Summer and as much as I like Autumn I am dreading the Winter. I live in a cold house which is difficult to heat, even when I can afford to put the heating on.
Home Bargains already have aisles of Christmas decorations as well as Halloween items. I get that it is a good idea to spread the cost, but still...

DappledThings · 20/08/2023 10:18

I love it. It's not been too hot this year so the summer's been ok. No nights I've not been able to sleep because of heat. But I hate it being light so late. I get such a relief when the nights start drawing in. Not that I think they are yet. Still light after 7 is still summer timings for me.

Nothing to do with snuggling on sofas or "hot choc" either. It's just more peaceful.

Medusaismyhero · 20/08/2023 10:22

I love the changing seasons. Any season. Just not so keen when we're in the middle of winter but love the turning from winter to spring, spring to summer, summer to autumn and autumn to winter. If winter wasn't eleventy billion months long I'd be much happier though!

zingally · 20/08/2023 10:22

I love this time of year!

That first time you feel that little Autumn nip in the air is one of my favourite moments of the year.
The light is also beautiful in September/October.
My birthday is right at the end of September, and summer often has a last hurrah around then. I've often had some lovely warm, summery birthdays. Particularly the past few years.

Beverlysparty · 20/08/2023 10:07

I agree. But I remember being devoured on another thread when I suggested that the ever lengthening of the Christmas season just dilutes the excitement, and I preferred it when the run up started in late Nov/early Dec. Apparently it was none of my business and I could just ignore it if I wanted to!

I wouldn’t worry much about those types. They’re usually the ones who love Christmas to the point that they think everyone must do too and anyone who doesn’t is a Grinch while moaning about how much they have to do that no one asked them to or appreciates and being upset that they weren’t thanked enough. The threads around, during, and right after Christmas only proves how ridiculous it gets and isn’t usually worth the stress people place on themselves.

Autumn is the best season. Summer can suck it.

100%.

Same. I love the dark cozy evenings at home. Snuggled on the sofa, with just a lamp or two on, watching a film or getting stuck into a tv series.

LadyMadderLake · 20/08/2023 10:25

I love this time of year so much, it’s my favourite. It’s the feeling of new beginnings and projects, as well as the snuggly autumn feeling and being cosy on the sofa while it’s dark and raining outside. I wfh and I always buy new pens and notebooks when school back because it just adds to that nice feeling!

I like summer too, but I get bored of it by late august, flies in the kitchen, getting woken up too early by the sun etc. in fact I always look forward to the seasons changing.

The only time of year I DONT enjoy is Christmas! It’s just too much. I could handle it once every five years maybe.

ZickZack · 20/08/2023 10:25

hylian · 20/08/2023 09:01

Seasons changing is a part of life, you can't stop it, so I just try to accept it and enjoy what is good about any season.

Autumn happens to be my favourite season so I'm quite excited, but when Winter comes around I dread the freezing temperatures and with Summer I hate the long hot days. But I just try to think about Christmas and family time in the Winter, and Summer holidays, sea swimming etc. in the Summer.

Is there not anything you like about Autumn?

The freshness in the air, the lovely colours everywhere, cosy clothes, pumpkin spice??? There must be something good for you about it?

I love this. I need to start focusing on the small things about summer I actually like instead of allowing wasps, sweat, sleepless nights and mosquitos to ruin it. I'm such a summer grump but trying to be less so now I've got two small children who will love being out in the sun.

Rufus27 · 20/08/2023 10:26

I love this time of year, though accept I’m in the minority. I’m v fair skinned and menopausal with low blood pressure which makes hot weather tricky. Much prefer dark evenings, winter clothes and the potential for snow!

TheYadaYada · 20/08/2023 10:27

I love this time of year and feeling the hints of autumn in the air. I know autumn is around the corner when I stop deadheading my patio pot plants and just let them go over!

We’ve been away, otherwise I’d definitely feel cheated as the summer here has been so shit.

LaurelandHedgy · 20/08/2023 10:28

I used to live overseas, somewhere very hot. When I was moving back here I was told I would hate the UK weather. It's not true at all. I love the seasons. Relentless heat and humidity every day drives you bonkers. I know, I've been there.

I think what has helped me is the mindset I have developed. I basically go into every season asking myself what I can and cannot do, and plan activities around it.

I'd say Summer is my least favourite. It is getting hotter here and we just don't have the infrastructure for it. You can't jump in a cool pool, get easy access to a beach, swim in the sea and there are no fans or aircon. Two nights ago I got ravaged by mozzies in bed. It's unpleasant. I'd rather be in the 40 degree heat and 90% humidity of where I used to live. In fact, now I am thinking about it, I really dislike summer here. I usually book as much of it away as I can. We went away for 3.5 weeks in July and I am going away for a week in a bit. When I get back it is operation Autumn and I am excited about it.

Dontcallmescarface · 20/08/2023 10:30

I love the spring and summer but autumn and especially winter can get in the bin. Going to work in the dark, coming home in the dark, the wind, rain ice and the hell that is snow (can't stand the stuff), make me wish I could hibernate until it's all over.

LadyMadderLake · 20/08/2023 10:30

YadaYada exactly, that happened to me yesterday with my balcony pots! The flowers are out of control now and I just thought “meh, that’s enough deadheading!” 🌺

catchingclouds · 20/08/2023 10:31

I am fascinated by the changing seasons (I think I am a bit of a romantic poet at heart!) The 'ber' months are my favourite, but I always feel a bit nostalgic and wistful this time of year.
I look forward to autumn, but I'm in no rush to get it underway. September is late summer. There's plenty of time for autumn later.
The fun and excitement of the end of summer term seem so long ago. Now a new school year is about to start which will all too soon be another school year ended and another step closer to them leaving.
Earlier nights mean summer is dwindling. It just reminds me of everything that has come and gone, so I can empathise with anyone who feels a bit blah this time of year.

jlpth · 20/08/2023 10:32

I have to agree, I do despise the start of Christmas so many months in advance. You can get shopping online to avoid the supermarket. And stuff online in general to avoid shops. I do that anyway as I don’t like shopping.

amusedbush · 20/08/2023 10:33

I'm a bit of a paradox and I'm hard to please when it comes to the seasons.

I can't cope in temperatures over 17 degrees and humidity makes me feel claustrophobic. I'm autistic and being warm exacerbates all sensory input, plus I have a chronic condition that means I can't regulate my body temperature for shit.

Obviously, I much prefer the cooler weather in autumn/winter but I dread the clocks changing in October because I absolutely hate driving in the dark. I despise it, and every winter feels like 40 years of commuting in the dark before the nights lighten again.

And on the flip-side of me disliking hot weather, I also have a borderline phobia of snow and ice so I'm anxious about that pretty much until the clocks change again in March. I have had very public panic attacks when trying to walk on even small amounts of ice so my winter survival kit includes Yaktrax, a grippy ferrule for my walking stick, and (because the council doesn't grit any street in a two mile radius) I carry around a tub of salt so I can sprinkle the ground as I walk.

I wish I could have light 6am - 9pm and a constant temperature of 8 degrees. Basically, I'm only happy during the first two weeks in April and October 😂
