To think Sindy was better than Barbie

The Barbie film has brought back memories of my Sindy doll and accessories i had in the early 80s. I loved this Sindy evening dress and i wanted it in a full size version. https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/678214025122537700/

I love pink but there was/is so much of it with Barbie whereas Sindy accessories were all different colours and quite tasteful. I had the four poster bed and the writing bureau. And the gig and horse.

And let’s not forget Carrie and Christopher!

Needmorelego · 22/07/2023 16:36

@DragonflyLady oh yes….Christopher had a little willy 😂

OK I'm going to admit I'm middle 50's in age, I still have a sindy shower with the towel, a dinning table with 4 chairs and a Welsh dresser with all the plates and cutlery, even a butter holder. My great niece plays with them now and loves them. It's lovely to here her chatting to herself whilst playing 😁 my Cindy married next doors action man. Oh and I never had a barbie.

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/07/2023 16:44

Mine was the horseriding Sindy, brunette like me. She slept in under handmade blankets in a beautiful box bed that I made for her.

My younger sister got Barbies. Millions of them. I wasn't impressed. I though Barbie was too skinny, too pink and had too much stuff.😆

Walkingtheplank · 22/07/2023 16:45

I've found my people!

I had 2 Sindy Dolls - a blonde and brunette. She had a bedroom set which I think I received for my 6th birthday. I especially remember the hangers in the wardrobrobe.

They were friends with my next door neighbour's Action Men too.

I dont think I even saw a Barbie until I was around 12 years old and I thought she was very skinny and rough looking compared to beautiful Sindy.

Sux2buthen · 22/07/2023 16:49

I had this very dress and I'd forgotten until I saw this. Thanks for unlocking happy memories Grin

CrepuscularCritter · 22/07/2023 16:53

I had a Sindy in the 70s. My mum managed to outfit her for some of my rather niche interests at the time, so she had an ice axe, a denim backpack and an orange climbing tent for the mountains. I still have no idea how my mum made the ice axe, but there was soldering involved.

Sindy all the way - I'm in my 50s though and I don't really remember Barbie being a thing. I remember my uncle taking me to the toy shop to buy the Sindy bedroom set for my birthday when I was about 5. It had a blue 'duvet' which was very avant garde in the early 70s. Just found it in the Sindy museum gallery, which has made me very happy!

JenniferBooth · 22/07/2023 16:59

@Sux2buthen its gorgeous isnt it I STILL WANT IT

I had Sindy too. Loved her.

I'm showing my age here but does anyone remember another doll called 'Havoc Super Agent'? She was amazing...kind of a female James Bond. I had a motorbike and speed boat for her and hiking gear. Played with her for hours!!

I had a Havoc, it was the jungle reporter on. She had camouflage jumpsuit and a little camcorder.
I didn't have any accessories for Sindy, I used to make her dresses from tissues and sellotape.

timefornewme2023 · 22/07/2023 17:02

Ohh this thread has given me the most glorious nostalgia for my beloved Sunday dolls!
I so wish I could see them again.

I had several of the dolls - and think I remember a shower and definitely a horse and carriage.

We also looked down on Barbie - my DM was probably in the too American camp.

I am going to have a little look at that museum link later.

Still going to see the Barbie movie with my DC though!

Zebedee55 · 22/07/2023 17:03

Yeah, I had Sindy and Paul dolls. Better than Barbie. I also had Tressy - who's hair"grew" lol🙂

Cocolapew · 22/07/2023 17:04

Havoc was brilliant 😆

Shopper727 · 22/07/2023 17:05

My grandma made me a 4 poster bed for my barbies that was very like that.
i liked both. I was talking about the new barbie movie with boyfriend yesterday and he said he much preferred sindy and he fancied her more than barbie?!?! V random but then I’m more sindy than barbie. I think barbie had more choice?

however no interest in the movie whatsoever even though i loved my dolls as a kid

I was given a Sindy with growing hair for my main Christmas present one year. You had to turn a key in her back to make the hair grow but the minute I did the key stuck and it never worked. I didn't dare tell my parents (we were quite poor) and I was heartbroken. All my friends had Sindy, I don't remember Barbie being a thing back then.

gingerguineapig · 22/07/2023 17:14

Sindy was better than Barbie but I liked the Pippa dolls the best.

gingerguineapig · 22/07/2023 17:18

I had the Sindy shower of all things.

I remember the caravan but I think a friend must have had that. She had Barbies but I didn't like them because of the silly arms.

Butchyrestingface · 22/07/2023 15:08

My 7th birthday present. 😍😍😍

I remember being incredibly concerned by the fact that there was no internal bathroom facilities.

#SindyDoesSkegness

There was a caravan??!! I Had the buggy car and a tent! V jealous.

Buuut i also had the jacuzzi/swimming pool!

Also totally blown away with BBC/ITV Sindy/Barbie thing - exactly the same in our house!

JMSA · 22/07/2023 17:28

Oh, my Sindy house. Probably the best present I ever got.
Other than Speak & Spell.
That said, I LOVED my Barbie motorhome some years later.

londonmummy1966 · 22/07/2023 17:37

I had a blonde SIndy and a brunette Action GIrl - I loved that SIndy so much and I think she had a more realistic figure (and was more poseable). My grandfather made me a set of bedrom furniture for her and later a bench and table and chairs. I made her so many clothes.

MagicClawHasNoChildren · 22/07/2023 17:57

I feel like I'm sticking my head above the parapet, here, but... Sindy was always a pale imitation of Barbie, and I only knew one person who had a Sindy and she never played with her precisely because she was a little bit rubbish.

Sorry, Sindy lovers.

TiramisuTastesDreamy · 22/07/2023 18:01

Never understood why Barbie prevailed - Sindy was so much nicer (and better !) loved all my Sindy accessories, especially the kitchen and greenhouse 😂 We love Sindy !!

Blueuggboots · 22/07/2023 18:03

Oh yes, I loved Sindy. Never liked barbie.
