To think Sindy was better than Barbie

The Barbie film has brought back memories of my Sindy doll and accessories i had in the early 80s. I loved this Sindy evening dress and i wanted it in a full size version. https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/678214025122537700/

I love pink but there was/is so much of it with Barbie whereas Sindy accessories were all different colours and quite tasteful. I had the four poster bed and the writing bureau. And the gig and horse.

Urgh no, Barbie was loads better! They haven't made a Sindy film, let's put it that way 😂 Sindy felt cheap compared to Barbie plus I preferred the accessories that Barbie came with.
Saying that, when I was old enough to be playing with Barbie I preferred CITV over CBBC, so do with that what you will!

munchbunch12 · 22/07/2023 15:51

My Sindy also dated my brother's Action Man. She used to drive his tank and he'd drive her red Range Rover.

DogSitterMum · 22/07/2023 15:53

My sister just reminded me of our cousins Action Man with gripping hands and moving eyes that she found in my Sindy’s bed 😂. I’d forgotten about that and she had no shame as three Pippa’s and Bionic Women were in the same room!

AutieNOT0tie · 22/07/2023 15:56

I preferred sindy barbie had permanently bent arms which looked weird

Yetisrus29 · 22/07/2023 15:56

We used to have Action man climbing through the windows of the dolls' house (that Dad built and decorated and carpeted for us) and abseiling down the roof😂

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen you need to do an AMA!

I had a sindy in the 90s that came with a zip wire and bike, plus 4x4 camper van and also one whose arms went round when she swam. Loved both. Got my first sindy free with weetabix!

WombatCowgirl · 22/07/2023 15:59

It's odd I still have the muscle memory of how it feels to do up a Sindy plastic ballet shoe, or fasten the girth of her horse. Sindy's horse and moped looked real, compared to the dainty pink Barbie car etc. One of my Sindy dolls had a dark pixie cut and a two piece made of holographic material, so 80s, so cutting edge! I too thought of Barbie as out to please the boys!

I loved my Sindy too. I had one for my sixth birthday, a blonde Sindy in a yellow outfit. I really wanted Paul in his red sports car too, but never achieved those giddy heights. Somewhere I have various Sindy clothes inherited from my older cousins, the duffel coat, black pvc mac, blue anorak with white fur trim. Her clothes were great. In the 1960s she even had proper nylon stockings ! I did have those from my cousin but long lost.
Did anyone have the Mary Quant doll, Daisy ? She had wonderful clothes, red platform clogs.. also the smaller doll Amanda Jane had beautifully made outfits.

I was just about to come on and post about Daisy. I loved both Sunday and Daisy. I particularly loved Daisy as she was tiny and so was I !!!(still am 😂). We had loads of clothes and loved dressing the dolls up and doing their hair - or ruining their hair!!! DM was a hairdresser so we pretended we were too.

DSis is 9 years younger and she loved Barbie - I’m not sure they had Barbie in the West of Ireland when I was a child 😂

spent a Christmas afternoon making a nightdress for my daughter's Sindy. She is still upstairs with some Barbies which belong to a granddaughter.

Oh OP, I used to work on Sindy development in the dim and distant past. We took a lot of trouble to try and give her interesting and non stereotypical clothes and props. We used to rather look down on Barbie, we thought she was a sexualised air head!

I’m so glad someone liked her.

Wow that’s wonderful! I loved Sindy - and like some of the other PPs here - I somehow had the impression that she was classier than Barbie! I’ve just spent an inordinate amount of time on this website, reminiscing about all the outfits and the furniture…

@LadyMonicaBaddingham it’s a shame I still don’t have my Sindy horse - he would have really enjoyed certain parts of the Barbie movie 😂🐴

Yes! I loved Daisy and the fabulous clothes! I also remember a vast array of Pippa dolls. I used to save up my pocket money and I vividly remember once staying with my Nan and Great Aunt in Nottingham and I had been coveting a particularly lovely brunette Pippa in the local toy shop. I was 2pence short, my Nan wanted to give me the 2p but there was no way my Aunt was going to lend it to agree with her as she thought it would be better, and character forming, if I waited until I had saved it for myself. But I couldn’t have anymore pocket money until I had gone back home, never saw the beautiful brunette Pippa again 😢

Talipesmum · 22/07/2023 16:23

Amazing that someone here worked on Sindy development - very cool!

We had a Sindy or two, and a couple of barbies. Sindy had a grumpier face, but barbie was over smiley. But when you pushed their faces in, Sindy looked a bit silly whereas Barbie looked demonic.

Mainly though we didn’t play a lot with them as they were basically adults. We loved our Flower Fairy dolls the best - they looked like children and the outfits were beautiful, and they were made so well. We had loads!

Just had a little look on Ebay. They have a Patch's pony who I had forgotten was called Pixie. Lots of Patch and Sindy dolls for sale at eye watering prices. Lovely memories of playing for hours with my little sister and her Tressy. I bought her a replacement last year for her 60th birthday!

Cocolapew · 22/07/2023 14:59

I had a Sindy and 3 Pippas, including a dancing one. You moved her arm up and down and her head went round 😄

Like the exorcist?!😱

EscapeTheCastle · 22/07/2023 16:28

Not allowed a Pippa for the sake of 2p? No! What a shame.

My Barbie was the peppy sort, I never saw her as sexulised. She got to wear Action Man's cool Army fatigues so much that I can't actually remember what outfit she arrived in.

Meanwhile I had a Sindy that looked super in her Ballarina outfit. Poor thing had her hair cut though as that was the fashion mid 80's.

sanityisamyth · 22/07/2023 16:28

Didn't have either. Didn't see the point!

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 22/07/2023 16:28

Has lots of sindy stuff, massive house, horse, camping stuff etc. i wasn’t allowed Barbie, Mum said she was a tart!

okiedokie1 · 22/07/2023 16:28

Sunday had a massive head

alwayshavebeenfemale · 22/07/2023 16:29

Tressy. A key in her back to wind her hair in through a hole in her head for short styles; press a button on her tummy and pull the hair to unwind it for long hair! She was ace!!!!

JenniferBooth · 22/07/2023 16:29

Looking back the early signs of me being child free by choice were there. Someone bought me a Tiny Tears type doll which got played with for about two hours max then tossed to one side to gather dust
I was more interested in dressing Sindy and getting new outfits and accessories for her

I was a barbie girl but I did have a horse sindy which was my favourite doll. It had the whole showjumping kit.

SirVixofVixHall · 22/07/2023 16:33

I also had a set of dolls called the Disco Girls - Britt, Dee, Tia and Domino.

DragonflyLady · 22/07/2023 16:33

Loved my Sindy, and Pippa. Preferred them to Barbie.
