To think Sindy was better than Barbie

The Barbie film has brought back memories of my Sindy doll and accessories i had in the early 80s. I loved this Sindy evening dress and i wanted it in a full size version. https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/678214025122537700/

I love pink but there was/is so much of it with Barbie whereas Sindy accessories were all different colours and quite tasteful. I had the four poster bed and the writing bureau. And the gig and horse.

I loved my Sindy dolls but especially my Sindy horses. I think I had three or four. One was dapple grey and one had a neck that you could lower so he could graze

I also loved my Sindy hospital.

Summering23 · 22/07/2023 18:16

I kept my Sindy house complete with all furniture and accessories for future children ( aka couldn’t bare to get rid of it). My daughter has it all but isn’t that bothered with it all and offers her horrid Barbie dream house.
when I first got it out of the loft for her I lost hours to sourcing extra bits on eBay 😂

ladygindiva · 22/07/2023 18:29

Yanbu. I loved my ( dark haired like me) Sindy. And this was my favourite toy by far images.app.goo.gl/MUFR9CAmwtfejx9y5

I feel like I'm sticking my head above the parapet, here, but... Sindy was always a pale imitation of Barbie, and I only knew one person who had a Sindy and she never played with her precisely because she was a little bit rubbish.

Sorry, Sindy lovers.

How dare you 🤣

I was born in 1971 and had Sindy, a blonde and a brunette. My parents couldn't afford the extra outfits so mum made them. I know now my mum sat up sewing one Christmas Eve till her fingers were sore. On Christmas Day I opened a dress for Sindy. It was a back column dress with a full red ballroom style outer skirt. To this day I would love that dress for myself ❤️

CuteCillian · 22/07/2023 18:59

I adored my Action Girl.

@Icandothis1970 I had a Havoc doll too. She had an air hostess outfit and a Geiger counter. I didn't have a clue what that was. Her navy bodysuit unravelled like nylon tights. I was upset about that.

I had Sindy. None of my friends had Barbie, I don't think she was a thing in my village in the 1970s. My partner obtained Sindy items from the charity shop he volunteers in with a view to selling them. The damned things furniture and accessories are in boxes except the 2 horses, gig and horsebox and they've been taking up space in my spare room for over a year. Any offers? 😁

Walkingtheplank · 22/07/2023 19:11

That Sindy Museum website is fantastic. These are the two dolls I had, together with their wardrobe with the blue hangers inside.

I had a Sindy doll. I coloured her eye lids in with green felt tip pen to give her a makeover.
My parents made her a lounge like the ones made from cardboard and sticky black plastic in the style of Blue Peter.
I also had a dark skinned, blonde haired doll from the Pippa family.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 22/07/2023 19:19

Loved Sindy - my favourite was an 80s aerobics outfitted one. Barbie always seemed a bit vacuous and probably had a Valley Girl/Kardashian drawl. Sindy was much more knowing and wasn't adverse to a fag and vodka tonic

honeyfox · 22/07/2023 19:20

I loved Sindy! I remember my granny bought me the ballerina one once for my birthday. Another Christmas I got the horses and jumps.

But I just had deja vu there with the Flower Fairies. I wanted but never got them.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 22/07/2023 19:26

I had a couple of Sindys. I liked the fact you could get different colour haired ones.
We didn't have a huge amount of money and I think at least one I had was second or third hand.

I used to make all their clothes myself - pocket money spent on scraps of sari fabric from the stalls down Shepherds Bush market.

I never got any Sindy add ons, even though I coveted that bloody caravan beyond belief. I had a wardrobe that had a pull down flap for a desk in it and I turned that area into my own sindy house. Made all the furniture from Kleenex boxes and lolly sticks! I enjoyed that bit far more than actually playing with the dolls, tbh.

ShinyPikachu · 22/07/2023 19:32

Oh I had that Sindy wardrobe too. I had totally forgotten about it.

I did have more Barbies overall, and I got the massive pink Barbie campervan when it was THE gift that Christmas. My parents also got me a massive Barbie house that all my Barbies and Sindys (and their boyfriends) lived in. It must have been about 4ft high and made of cardboard, I think around 4 or 5 floors in it and it had a lift so I thought it was the fanciest thing ever.

Nat6999 · 22/07/2023 23:51

I loved Sindy right from when I got my first one as a Christmas present in 1974. I collected the furniture & had lots of the dolls from my first Lovely lively Sindy to the Active ballerina & then the funtime & weekender dolls. I now collect them as an adult, I have a mixture of the older dolls & some of the new KK ones, I collect mainly 1960's & 1970's clothes as they were better quality to the later ones & I buy new handmade ones from a lovely lady on Instagram who has a page where she displays the clothes she makes & tells the story of Sindytown where a community of dolls live & work. Anyone who is interested in collecting Sindy dolls, there are several groups on Instagram & Facebook that hold online & inperson events, or there is Dollycon which is held later in the year.

We used to have Action man climbing through the windows of the dolls' house (that Dad built and decorated and carpeted for us) and abseiling down the roof😂

Me and my friend’s Sindys went through a phase of kidnapping her brother’s Action Man and driving off in his jeep wearing his clothes.

montysma1 · 23/07/2023 00:19

My mother was too mean for Sindy. I had Pippa!

Did have a Sindy horse though which I was devoted to and crocheted Tack for😁

VictoriaVenkman · 23/07/2023 00:21

I had a Sindy, I assumed she was a cheaper purchase than Barbie

Mogs43 · 23/07/2023 00:28

I also had Sindy’s which my Grandma made all the clothes for (and wasn’t allowed to watch ITV). One Christmas I really wanted the Barbie House (I think all my friends were getting one)- instead I got the Sindy Kitchen - I still remember the disappointment and tears. Crazy - I should have been used to the disappointment. Never got a Mr Frosty either! Lol

I had a Havoc too. I remember the scuba diving and RIB boat set that I loved.

WhenHarryMetTaylor · 23/07/2023 00:29

I had a Pippa

LadyVictoriaSponge · 23/07/2023 00:52

I had a brunette Sindy, she was so pretty and also ballerina Sindy with the bendable feet, Barbie really wasn’t a thing when I was little. Does anyone remember Dusty the air hostess doll?

My sister had a Sindy in the early 60s because Barbies were just too expensive. I got one a few years later because I desperately wanted the blue satin and brocade ballgown Mum had made for my sister's doll, and sister wouldn't give it to me (she's nine years older than me and was way past dolls by then) until I had a doll to wear it. Ah, memories! 😄

I remember Sindy's riding outfit, jodhpurs and smart jacket and helmet. If only we'd had the horse, that's something I'd have loved!
