To think Sindy was better than Barbie

The Barbie film has brought back memories of my Sindy doll and accessories i had in the early 80s. I loved this Sindy evening dress and i wanted it in a full size version. https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/678214025122537700/

I love pink but there was/is so much of it with Barbie whereas Sindy accessories were all different colours and quite tasteful. I had the four poster bed and the writing bureau. And the gig and horse.

Sorry for 3 beautifuls, I think I got carried away Grin

I only had Sindys too. I'm bemused by the Barbie hysteria recently. I also had a Pippa or two, they were teeny and I used to pretend they were fairies.

@Smidge001 oh thats so cool

Amazing that someone here worked on Sindy development - very cool!

We had a Sindy or two, and a couple of barbies. Sindy had a grumpier face, but barbie was over smiley. But when you pushed their faces in, Sindy looked a bit silly whereas Barbie looked demonic.

Mainly though we didn’t play a lot with them as they were basically adults. We loved our Flower Fairy dolls the best - they looked like children and the outfits were beautiful, and they were made so well. We had loads!

I LOVED The Flower Fairies!!! They were so beautiful with their detachable wings & pixie ears.. thanks for reminding me of them 💕

I had the sweet secrets Sindy which came with a big locket, and you could wear her bracelets as earrings

Also the crimp & bead Sindy with the dreadlocks - she was seriously cool.

Sindy was just cooler than Barbie.

I had a brunette Sindy too

she didn’t have the four story house with the lift on the side. She has a four room bungalow that she has to jump over the partitions to get the the next room, or step outside

Oh I remember this house as well 😊

I was also Team Sindy (born 1969) and was given ballerina Sindy in the mud 70s.

I recall an off white three piece suite, the “working” salon style hairdryer, The dressing table as well.My dad built me a fabulous double wardrobe and I had a lot of clothes. I also had the more Bohemian Daisy, and a tiny Pippa with a blue and yellow T-shirt dress and little kidney shaped yellow telephone.

I played with them into my early teens and only really stopped when some of my grammar school contemporaries found out and royally ripped the piss out of me.

In my 30s my Dad found me some still vintage boxed Sindy furniture which I have been lovingly storing in a wooden chest in shipping container on a friends land. Unfortunately the large amount of stuff in said storage had to be moved quickly quite recently and some furniture including said trunk cannot be accounted for…. I was quite gutted …..

I also remember Kellogg’s running a promotion / competition on the back of a cornflakes packet for pretty much the entire Sindy collection available at the time. You had to collect enough little Sindy heart logos from cereal packets to enter, which I diligently tried to do, but my poor Mum was too busy to get involved so that came to nothing. But I remember dreaming over that piece of cardboard, looking at all the pictures and dreaming of winning for months…..

Fabulous thread - thank you for the happy memories ☺️

I entered the Kellogs competition, my dad must have eaten his own weight in cornflakes because I was desperate for tokens to enter. A lady on one of the Sindy pages on FB actually won the competition & still has all the furniture she won.

Pedigree are making an announcement at Dollycon in the autumn about Sindy. It is her 60th birthday & there are rumours that they will be producing some new dolls as the KK contract is over & they have the rights again.

I had Sindy dolls rather than Barbie too! And she was in a relationship with my brothers Action Man 😁

My Sindy was in love with my action man too! How weird! 😂

TinselAngel · 30/07/2023 12:24

I had an orange Sindy tent which had the most adorable little suitcase of camping crockery and cutlery.

stbrandonsboat · 30/07/2023 12:30

Sindy was adorable and so much better than Barbie, who was too thin and not very bright 😂

I have a Sindy who is dressed in a traditional nurses outfit. She looks so cute and wholesome.

Needmorelego · 30/07/2023 12:39

@stbrandonsboat from an adult looking back I think Sindy was living off Mummy and Daddy’s money. That fancy townhouse, Range Rover and all those horses.
Being a nurse was probably her rebel phase. Getting a “proper” job to the horror of her mother who wouldn’t have preferred her being a secretary because she might meet her future husband while working in a “nice” office.

Needmorelego · 30/07/2023 12:40

Dating Action Man was also part of that rebel phase 😂

Maybe my friend and I were outliers, but our Sindys regularly kidnapped her brother’s Action Man, took off his clothes, and drove off in his jeep laughing. I have a vivid memory of Action Man’s painted-on blue jeans underpants.

We’re both quite well-adjusted adults, honestly.

Needmorelego · 30/07/2023 12:52

@Fidelina me and my best friends Sindy’s would frequently kidnap her sister’s Ken and strip him naked.
He was then tied (naked) to the yellow beach buggy and shoved down the stairs…..
What was wrong with us 😂😂😂

ginghamstarfish · 30/07/2023 12:56

Loved my Sindy, and Patch, and didn't like the look of Barbie, too grown up and not a hint of realism. My Sindy had Action Man for a boyfriend. I started making clothes for them when I was very young, and have been sewing ever since.

We were protesting against the patriarchy? 😀

So was mine !!

MavisMcMinty · 30/07/2023 15:14

Of course becoming a nurse would have given Sindy greater opportunity to marry a doctor. No flies on Sindy.

Krystall · 30/07/2023 15:15

I loved Sindy, mine had a horse, a yellow buggy, some bedroom furniture, loads of clothes. There were no Barbie’s in my house (and I had three sisters). Sindy was more real. I sometimes look at Sindy stuff on eBay. ☺️

PilsAwfulDilemna · 30/07/2023 15:16

Sindy was the classier one

MavisMcMinty · 30/07/2023 15:21

I grew up abroad in the 1960s and 70s, so my American friends all had Barbies and we British girls had Sindys. I’m afraid I saw my Sindy as inferior, and it’s only now as an adult that I see she was superior. Sorry, Sindy. I loved you a bit, honest.

Same here! The sex may have been limited by the lack of organs, but they didn't know any better 😂

GarlicGrace · 30/07/2023 15:27

My favourite 'adult' doll was Tressy, though. Like many fellow Tressy owners, I cut her hair and was really upset when it didn't grow back 🙄
