To think Sindy was better than Barbie

The Barbie film has brought back memories of my Sindy doll and accessories i had in the early 80s. I loved this Sindy evening dress and i wanted it in a full size version. https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/678214025122537700/

I love pink but there was/is so much of it with Barbie whereas Sindy accessories were all different colours and quite tasteful. I had the four poster bed and the writing bureau. And the gig and horse.

Ha ha me too! I think my DM was against dolls but my auntie got me ballerina Sindy and others as presents over the years plus Action Men for DB.

Had hours of fun with them!

This took me a few days to dig out but I am very pleased I found where I put it. I bought this last summer in a charity shop.
Oh she had some interesting fashions 😂

The more I look at that picture I realise that’s how I imagine some of the Mother in Laws from many a mumsnet thread. The one in the pink frock must be the daughter in law who has been given that dress for christmas.

No, I much preferred Barbie. I liked how Barbie looked so grown-up and so her play was aspirational. She was definitely not a 'baby' toy imh 6 yr old opinion.

I always thought Sindy's face looked a little 'baby doll' and cutisie which didn't sit with her body shape and I found her rather disturbing. She was like a child-adult and it just didn't sit right.

However I do have to agree that Sindy's horse was better than Barbie's because I think it was more flexible.

Barbie looked too skinny

Oh OP, I used to work on Sindy development in the dim and distant past. We took a lot of trouble to try and give her interesting and non stereotypical clothes and props. We used to rather look down on Barbie, we thought she was a sexualised air head!

@Needmorelego I was OBSESSED with that annual! I had the pink Edwardian dress too - Sindy cosplaying as Lady Bracknell, lol!

Did you like the stories with Sindy's friend Gwen (I think it was) and her model archenemy Sonia Haggerty? How I wish there had been dolls made!

I had Holiday Paul! The only good thing about the early 90s Sindy was the re-introduction of Paul. The idea of Sindy as a cheap knock-off as Barbie really comes from that time and its trashy fashions. 80s wholesome sloany Sindy was so much classier!

I asked for a Barbie and got a dark haired Sindy as she was eminently more sensible

I think that set a precedent of never getting what I asked for.

I'm gutted I never kept my Sindy annual, possibly 1986? There was loads about ice skating and think there was an interview with torvill and Dean in there! Must've been just after the Winter Olympics

It gets worse than Philip Schofield: Mark and Marie were inspired by Prince Andrew and Fergie. 😂Great dolls though, I eventually got a set on ebay for DD1 after decades of wanting them (before the recent Andrew scandal).

Thanks for that brilliant link, I don't think I still have the annual but I did spend a good chunk of my free time as a 10 year old improvising variety shows in the Telesindy Studio! As a toy it was quite basic and cardboardy, but the imaginative possibilities were endless.
