To think Sindy was better than Barbie

The Barbie film has brought back memories of my Sindy doll and accessories i had in the early 80s. I loved this Sindy evening dress and i wanted it in a full size version. https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/678214025122537700/

I love pink but there was/is so much of it with Barbie whereas Sindy accessories were all different colours and quite tasteful. I had the four poster bed and the writing bureau. And the gig and horse.

You're so right. I loved Sindy when I was young. She just seemed more sophisticated to me! 😆

Conkersinautumn · 22/07/2023 14:36

They were both terribly restricted toys, Sindy and barbies clothes were much of a muchness to me.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 22/07/2023 14:37

I had Sindy dolls rather than Barbie too! And she was in a relationship with my brothers Action Man 😁

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/07/2023 14:37

I loved Sindy and used to make clothes for her with my mum's help. She seemed much more realistic than Barbie.

iatealltheminieggs · 22/07/2023 14:37

I had the Sindy house. Loved it! I only had one Sindy doll and a Paul, who had a diamond stud in his ear.

Theraffarian · 22/07/2023 14:38

Oh I loved my Sindy dolls , their jam packed wardrobe and tiny shoes and boots . I don’t actually ever remember having a Barbie .

Robinbuildsbears · 22/07/2023 14:39

Sindy is still better than Barbie, the dolls they sell at Argos are really good, I've bought eight of them. I just wish they made more clothes for them, although the creatable world doll's clothes just about fit them.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 22/07/2023 14:40

Yanbu I had sindy not barbie too

travailtotravel · 22/07/2023 14:40

I had a Sindy but really wanted a Barbie. Was Sindy cheaper? I mean, I'm surprised I had one at all but I'm also wondering if its a bit like I wasn't allowed to watch anything on ITV - was Sindy more BBC? Anyway, I'll see the film even though I'm 50!

firef1y · 22/07/2023 14:42

I can't really say I wanted either growing, but I don't really remember Barbie being a thing when I was in the target age range. I was bought a Cindy for one birthday, but I cut all her hair off within days and certainly didn't do all the imaginary stuff with her. (Undiagnosed Autism, didn't really do any imaginary play). 10years later when I had my first daughter Cindy had all but disappeared and Barbie was definitely the in thing

chipshopElvis · 22/07/2023 14:42

I had my mum's old Sindy with a killer 60s/70s wardrobe she was much cooler than my Barbies.

iatealltheminieggs · 22/07/2023 14:42

Ah here he is. Popstar Paul.
I can't remember the Sindy i had.

To think Sindy was better than Barbie
Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 22/07/2023 14:42

Oh OP, I used to work on Sindy development in the dim and distant past. We took a lot of trouble to try and give her interesting and non stereotypical clothes and props. We used to rather look down on Barbie, we thought she was a sexualised air head!

I’m so glad someone liked her.

sashagabadon · 22/07/2023 14:44

Agree, Sindy vastly superior. I had her kitchen and her dining room and she also had a lovely purple velvet dress

TooHotAndHumid · 22/07/2023 14:45

I 55 and was obsessed with Sindy in the 70s. My mum kept all the dolls and the furniture / bugy/ horse and my kids and my neice have enjoyed playing with them?
The 70s fashion outfits were quite something, yellow and brow flares with matching jacket and hat!

JenniferBooth · 22/07/2023 14:45

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen oh i loved her and the accessories I REALLY wanted the dress thats above in a full size version that i could have worn. My Sindy was in that dress most of the time. The four poster bed was cream coloured posts and a peach coloured bedspread. It was obvious ppl took the time and a lot of thought over colours and designs

Sindy had shit shoes though....

commonground · 22/07/2023 14:49

No, I much preferred Barbie. I liked how Barbie looked so grown-up and so her play was aspirational. She was definitely not a 'baby' toy imh 6 yr old opinion.

I always thought Sindy's face looked a little 'baby doll' and cutisie which didn't sit with her body shape and I found her rather disturbing. She was like a child-adult and it just didn't sit right.

However I do have to agree that Sindy's horse was better than Barbie's because I think it was more flexible.

SquashPenguin · 22/07/2023 14:51

I had a swimming Sindy, that thing was hilarious. You wound her arms up backwards and then put her in water and she’d go off at a million miles an hour 🤣

Glamourreader · 22/07/2023 14:51

Yep Sindy was better as she could ride her horse properly

EmmaPaella · 22/07/2023 14:53

My older sister had Sindy dolls, which I played with. I then had a Barbie and definite felt that I had the ITV version 😂

Rainbowshit · 22/07/2023 14:53

I loved Sindy. Barbie was always the baddie in our games.

SirVixofVixHall · 22/07/2023 14:54

I loved my Sindy too. I had one for my sixth birthday, a blonde Sindy in a yellow outfit. I really wanted Paul in his red sports car too, but never achieved those giddy heights. Somewhere I have various Sindy clothes inherited from my older cousins, the duffel coat, black pvc mac, blue anorak with white fur trim. Her clothes were great. In the 1960s she even had proper nylon stockings ! I did have those from my cousin but long lost.
Did anyone have the Mary Quant doll, Daisy ? She had wonderful clothes, red platform clogs.. also the smaller doll Amanda Jane had beautifully made outfits.

Ah brilliant! Sindy was definitely superior. Definitely BBC to Barbie /ITV

JenniferBooth · 22/07/2023 14:55

Loving the BBC/ITV comparison 😀
