to think female newsreaders and presenters shouldn't wear make up

|I am absolutely sick of seeing men on TV with normal, natural looking faces, and the women sitting next to them with their faces smeared with gunk. Why can't women show normal, natural looking faces on TV too? What a horrendous disgusting message we are passing on to young girls. "You need to waste time and money smearing gunk on your face to be allowed to be seen in public"

I'd never really thought about it, but it's actually a good point. Fair enough for TV presenters who are "supposed" to look glamorous, but newsreaders, doing a job in which how they look shouldn't matter, really shouldn't have to wear any more make up than their male colleagues do.

That said, I wouldn't want to ban them from wearing make up if that's their choice.

sawnotseen · 19/07/2023 09:36

I also have a few male friends who wear make up when they go out of an evening and they look gorgeous! Why is what women choose to do, bothering you so much?

Mrsjayy · 19/07/2023 09:39

I have Lorraine Kelly on she's 60 looking her age but with make up on I mean I know she isn't a newsreader but an older woman on TV.

so are you not wondering why other people are not angry about the imposition put on women to cover up their natural faces by with ugly, time consuming, expensive and environmentally damaging crap before being allowed to be seen by the public?

Who's forcing the at gunpoint to wear makeup. I have female friends who have never wear makeup, just as I have have friends who do.

DD is 15 and can't be bothered, some of her friends do.

If Natasha Kaplinsky (yes I'm aware that this probably outs me as never watching the TV news) doesn't want to wear any make up other than to combat the studio lighting, then she wouldn't!

Make up doesn't distract from a woman telling us about the war in Ukraine or Boris Johnstone latest lies !

CurlewKate · 19/07/2023 09:40

Personally, I wish they didn't wear more than the men. I am pretty sure they would get a hard time from both the organisation they work for and from the public if they didn't. And while I wish that more women were prepared to go out on this particular limb I can quite see why they don't.

Totally agree with this earlier statement,
Everyone on TV wears make up, absolutely everyone.
I’d be more bothered about the fact the women are paid less.

Tessabelle74 · 19/07/2023 09:42

And who are you to say what women should or shouldn't wear "smeared on their face"? I pretty much guarantee most of the men have make up on aswell!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 19/07/2023 09:42

I didn't say it was distracting, I think its unnecessary though, beyond that which is used to avoid looking washed out and shiny under the studio lights. Plus it might be good to start "normalising" an unmade-up female face.

Am also being a total hypocrite as I wear make up myself!

The females have massively exaggerated lips in high colours, unnatural eyebrows, blue eyelids(!!! and if we were born with blue eye lids, the make up manufacturers would be selling us products to make them green or yellow or pink) and other hugely distorted and unnatural masking of their actual face

Where are the blue eyelids, bright lips and hugely distorted/unnatural masking in the photo included with your link?

Here?

There is a huge difference between make up to compensate for lighting, and make up which says "cover your face - you are not fit to be seen in public"

Maybe they don’t see it like that?

I wear bright lipsticks. They suit me. I wear them for me. I’ve never felt that I was unfit to go outside without them on, or that I was covering my natural lips. I’m sure some people do, but hopefully the minority.

You also do get control over what your “look” is when you go on TV - the women can choose a bare minimum look, if they want.

You appear to be projecting some massive insecurities here. You won’t find confidence in attacking other women.

Museya15 · 19/07/2023 09:44

I think they look great!

Wishimaywishimight · 19/07/2023 09:45

If a made up face looks like "gunk" has been "smeared" on it then you're doing it wrong 😀

Do you think women in"serious" jobs are flippant if they wear make up but it looks like that ?

SerafinasGoose · 19/07/2023 09:47

Fabulously entertaining thread 😂😂😂

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 19/07/2023 09:48

Nope, and you're putting words in my mouth, @Mrsjayy.

Do you never do anything unnecessary in life because you want to?

TimesRwo · 19/07/2023 09:49

Completely agree OP. Whenever a female newsreader comes on, I’m just so distracted by the make up and wondering what she looks like without it that I miss the headlines and now have no clue what’s happening in the world.

I don’t have the same issue with male newsreaders. Naturally I just hang on to their every word because of that natural look with only very subtle make up.

As someone who used to work in regional TV news I can assure you the men are also wearing quite a bit of make-up. The lights in those studios are brutal. The women just have less muted tone make up for lips and eyes. Most of the male presenters I worked with would have substantially more foundation and powder on than their female counterparts.

Absolutely this. The male presenters and even on air reporters love a bit of foundation… Can you blame them though? Make up is great!

Often the breakfast presenters have a fair bit on as they are in make-up before 5am and go in looking like everyone does at 4.30 in the morning…

Well I'm not putting words in your mouth I asked you a question and looked for clarification. So what do you mean?

AlltheFs · 19/07/2023 09:06

This. And also, men can just wear the same suit every day, probably a clean but identical to all the others shirt, and if they're really making an effort, they might have a few different ties.

Whereas women have to have dozens of different outfits, because people will actually write in and complain if they notice them wearing the same thing more than once.

But that's nothing compared with how most women in the public eye are bombarded with rape and death threats and sometimes people even go through with it.

Australian TV host wears same suit for a year and nobody notices

An Australian TV presenter says he wore the same blue suit for 12 months as part of stunt to highlight sexism - nobody notices.
