to think female newsreaders and presenters shouldn't wear make up

|I am absolutely sick of seeing men on TV with normal, natural looking faces, and the women sitting next to them with their faces smeared with gunk. Why can't women show normal, natural looking faces on TV too? What a horrendous disgusting message we are passing on to young girls. "You need to waste time and money smearing gunk on your face to be allowed to be seen in public"

Thank you Blossomtoes that explains a lot.

@orangeleavesinautumn if you think this about makeup what do you think about women's clothes? After all they're linked to the same oppression you speak of.

I do hope you're never on a jury, with a female victim that indulges in the frivolity of makeup. Equally I hope you're not unkind to the students you speak of based upon their choices. It's not as black and white as you think, I work with victims of Sexual Assault and many who were abused young go on to wear makeup as a means to look older, move on from the victim they were and less of a target. Judgement from women like you can be so dangerous.

@orangeleavesinautumn well ?

Never been worried about make up as it is normal to look as good as possible for the camera. However, some of the weather girls amaze me with some very strange outfits. I find I am distracted from what they are saying. Also amazed at the size of heels and wonder if they are just put on while they stand there. If they actually wear them much then pain and bunions will be the result.

Yes, and Becky Mantins hair seemed to be getting higher by the day 😂

And... they are often pregnant 🤔

@Blossomtoes

"I know someone who was in the audience for Strictly. Apparently Tess and Claudia’s stilettos are brought out just before the show starts and their slippers are magicked away"

And Brucie, (god rest his soul) was the same with his trousers, always put them on just before going live so as not to get them creased.

She's wearing makeup though :)

Is she? Well if she is it's very subtle indeed. She looks utterly herself to me.

blahblahblah1654 · 21/07/2023 15:04

Are you the same poster who thinks toilet mirrors should be covered in school?

LuvSmallDogs · 21/07/2023 15:19

I do wish there were more female presenters etc that were made up only to the degree that the male ones are. Not necessarily all of them, just a mix. This is because I believe the message we all receive, that to be at our most presentable we must change our faces so much vs men, is sexist and damaging.

I also believe that heavy make up often looks utterly terrible and yes, gunky, especially if it's been worn for several hours.

BlibBlobBloo · 21/07/2023 15:23

I was stood next to George Osbourne years ago when he came to do a speech at my work. And guess what? He was wearing thick powdered makeup! I'm surprised it hadn't melted off his face as we were stood outside on a boiling hot summer day.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 21/07/2023 16:04

Oh good goddess….

Only read the first few pages and many other posters have covered why YABU much more eloquently than I.

I recently saw a clip of Jordan Peterson opining that women shouldn’t wear make up in any workplace because it’s a sexual signal.

I swear if society gets any more regressive we’re going to morph back into primordial soup.

Of all the things to get get up about, this should be one of the lowest on the list.

WTF is with the increasing talk all the time if banning things that boil down to personal choice (quite often women’s personal choice strangely enough) ?

Of all the things contributing to civilisation heading down the shitter, focusing on whether or not women wear make up shouldn’t even be on the radar.

I'm amazed. I can't be 100% sure because some people look like they're wearing makeup when they're not because they have, for example, darker lips than average or longer eyelashes.

In that photo, I think I can see lipstick, eye shadow and mascara. She could also be wearing foundation - you can't usually tell with light cover foundation. Her lips look a light pink and her eyelids look a bit brown to me.
She's also looks like she's had her teeth artificially whitened, which is not makeup of course.

CurlewKate · 21/07/2023 18:23

It seems to me that there is a lot of misunderstanding on this thread. I don't think anyone (except perhaps the OP who is taking a pretty extreme view!) that makeup should be banned. I think what many of us are saying is that is should be OK for women in any field not to wear any-or at least not more than the anti shine products that men wear. And that we should challenge the orthodoxy that women look "better" with make up on. And perhaps that women should consider whether or not there is any conditioning involved when they say "I do it for ME!"

Blossomtoes · 21/07/2023 20:40

Why would we “challenge” the “orthodoxy” when we can look in the mirror and see the evidence with our own eyes?

orangeleavesinautumn · 22/07/2023 08:21

letshaveachangeshallwe · 21/07/2023 07:32

No I don't think they have that choice, not really. Attractiveness is so tied to success for females in the media, it could potentially be a career killer.

Op I think you make an interesting point. I wear make up every day, I do look better for it but why should I have to. I wish I felt able to not wear it every day but I'm not ready yet.

For what it's worth, I think I would have liked you teaching my children

Thank you very much x

@Blossomtoes "Why would we “challenge” the “orthodoxy” when we can look in the mirror and see the evidence with our own eyes?"

The evidence that society has told you you look better with make up and you've bought into that belief?

Pugdogmom · 22/07/2023 10:27

What a strange thread! If I watch the news, I don't really take notice of people's makeup 😒.

I wear it when I feel like it, because I want to, not because I feel I have to. I certainly don't go about judging other women for their makeup choices

Pankiraj · 22/07/2023 11:03

@orangeleavesinautumn the bright lights of a tv studio drain colour so male and female presenters both wear make up. Society judges people in all sorts of ways - height, weight, attractiveness, it’s endless. I can’t be bothered about news presenters wearing it. They’re at the lighter end of the spectrum.

What bothers me hugely is MSM - The Daily Mail (and all the others) with their constant litany of headlines about flaunting, showcasing etc, here’s a selection from today:
Kim Kardashian bares her impressively taut midriff
Rapper, 35, flaunts natural physique in a flirty minidress
Lottie Moss looks chic in a busty fitted midi dress
Newly-engaged Nina Agdal showcases her toned figure in a green bikini top
This why women in the public eye don’t go out without make up, or dressed up because when they do the negativity that is heaped upon them is ferocious. This filters down and puts huge pressure on youngsters and their peers who haven’t yet developed the skills to think I don’t need to do this. But until we wean ourselves off this kind of news, the DM isn’t going to stop.

I wear make up, mostly eyeliner and mascara because I like to. I can’t be arsed with foundation etc but I’m not going to judge women for wearing it. There are myriad reasons for it, it’s not all peer pressure and social media.

All through history, men and women have been judged on their looks, from the courtesans mobbed in the 1800s, it’s nothing new. It’s always been a bad thing for impressionable people (and we’ve all been there whether it’s gadgets or clothes etc). There are so many other things we need to address, global warming is a burning issue. The world is made for men, in so many ways, we still need to address gender equality, if we can fix these it might help with many other issues.

They are not mutually exclusive when a seriously intelligent woman understands that she has to smear the gunk in order to conform and be accepted.

What is mutually exclusive, is serious intelligence and not realising this make up tyranny is a form of oppression

You ABU to think at all. You are coming across as someone deeply troubled. I feel that you should seek therapy because this level of antagonism is not healthy!

I totally agree! I am sick of the likes of Amanda Holden and Carol Vorderman “flaunting their curves”. If I was looking for something that pissed me off, this would be it! These silly vacuous women seem to thrive on it, and who actually GAF?!

It’s symptomatic of the ridiculous hyperbole associated with so-called ‘journalism’, eg Tony Bennett’s “tragic” death?! HTF is there anything tragic about the death of a man of nearly 97 with a lifetime of success behind him?!

Notwittyenuff · 22/07/2023 14:12

Bit of an eyesore with envy are we? 😬

IfLoveBelievesInMe · 22/07/2023 14:19

I think they look nice. Not smeared with gunk. Doesn't everyone on TV have make up on?

TupperJen · 22/07/2023 14:22

So you're proposing that we dictate to women what they can and can't do to their own appearance? How does that work exactly?
But men, no rules for them? So that's just grand. Can't see any double standard there.

astarsheis · 22/07/2023 15:36

You are the one who sounds oppressive.

BluesandShoesies · 22/07/2023 19:20

Everyone in TV wears make up, even the men. Just like everyone in the theatre wears make up on stage.

because under all lights they would look like ill, washed out ghosts. (On stage the audience would struggle to make out the facial features)

if they didn’t wear make up on tv people would accuse them of not making the effort 😂
