to think female newsreaders and presenters shouldn't wear make up

|I am absolutely sick of seeing men on TV with normal, natural looking faces, and the women sitting next to them with their faces smeared with gunk. Why can't women show normal, natural looking faces on TV too? What a horrendous disgusting message we are passing on to young girls. "You need to waste time and money smearing gunk on your face to be allowed to be seen in public"

Good grief, why am I being attacked, I didn't start the bloody thread!!

I just think there'd be no harm in seeing bare female faces in the media, if that's their choice. It would be a step forward for equality if that was something that didn't cause comment, any more than it does for men.

midgetastic · 19/07/2023 09:53

The op has a point that it is part of the normalisation of what I also think are unhealthy habits

The expectation is that to look right women should wear make up , that their looks are very important is unhealthy

If sone women presenters looked more natural and some men presenters wore a more unnatural look then it wouldn't bother me at all but as it stands it is reinforcing negative messages about how women are expected to behave

And their shoes - so many of them in heels. Never see a male presenter in heels

Completely agree OP. Whenever a female newsreader comes on, I’m just so distracted by the make up and wondering what she looks like without it that I miss the headlines and now have no clue what’s happening in the world.

I don’t have the same issue with male newsreaders. Naturally I just hang on to their every word because of that natural look with only very subtle make up.

Nobody is attacking you I'm sorry if you feel like that @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal

I was just responding to something you said which I think is allowed on threads because it's a discussion.

Women without makeup on look rough

Maybe you do but please don't speak for all women

TribeD · 19/07/2023 09:55

Write to Points of View, they'll get you an answer.

Dear All News Channels Throughout The World, Why oh why must you smear gunk on the faces of female broadcasters? It prevents them from doing their job effectively because it just does.

Yours,
Orange

😂

I don't know what it is but the women presenters just come across as so frivolous and hysterical. I need a strong male with subtle makeup to tell me what is happening.

vodkaredbullgirl · 19/07/2023 09:56

Pointless me wearing make up for work, as I work nights 😃

Blarn · 19/07/2023 09:57

Blue eyelids? Are you watching something from 1998?

I see lots of women who do wear very little make up on tv. I like that they have the choice.

thaegumathteth · 19/07/2023 09:57

When my husband was on TV the amount of make up he had to west was ludicrous. Far more than I've ever worn in normal life.

Plymsoul · 19/07/2023 09:59

orangeleavesinautumn · 19/07/2023 09:16

so are you not wondering why other people are not angry about the imposition put on women to cover up their natural faces by with ugly, time consuming, expensive and environmentally damaging crap before being allowed to be seen by the public?

@orangeleavesinautumn

There isn’t one way to be a woman.

Yes, if there are women who don’t conform to the gender stereotypes who are trying to get jobs in tv presenting and being prevented because they don’t want to wear makeup then that’s wrong- but women who do wear makeup also deserve these jobs (if they are any good at it!).

Progress won’t be made by women joining in on policing other women’s appearance and telling them their choices aren’t valid.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 19/07/2023 10:00

I agree with OP to a point.

I was watching a sports programme recently and the men were wearing casual clothes, the women sports competitors were in casual clothes but the woman presenter was done up to the nines tottering about in heels with a face full of make up. She just looked really "silly and shallow" and out of place.

dikwad · 19/07/2023 10:01

What's it got to do with you? I, and many other women adore having make up on our faces, I love applying it, I love wearing it, I love buying it and I really couldn't give a fuck if the professionally offended like you don't like it.

Batterymarble · 19/07/2023 10:01

Maybe you're a tad jealous of the gunk, OP? My mother is, and it manifests itself as being very vocal that all make up, hairdye, botox, cosmetic surgery, gel nails, bikinis, showinhg collarbones are disgusting. She's also butt ugly, has very fine hair that she doesn't care for and has no self confidence.

On TV or stage you do need to have make up a few shades darker as the lights are so harsh.

Chickenpie35 · 19/07/2023 10:01

Go and give your head a little bit of a wobble.

Doggytastic · 19/07/2023 10:03

Sounds like you have too much time on your hands. Surely the most important thing about the news os to in fact listen to it and not to look at the presenters and scrutinise their appearance. They always look smart to me. Jealous a bit maybe?

ElFupacabra · 19/07/2023 10:04

Blanketsburg · 19/07/2023 09:13

"Smeared with gunk" is a weirdly aggressive phrase, and you used it twice. Why? What's wrong with saying "wearing makeup"?

Because “wearing makeup” doesn’t have the same hyperbolic, bile filled sentiment this particular poster thrives on.

N0ëlle · 19/07/2023 10:04

They usually have a natural look, even if the make up is high coverage, it's not like they look like ru paul just before he goes on stage.

And I agree, the men will have high coverage make up on too. No mascara or lipstick but high cover foundation, definitely.

ManuelBensonsLeftBoot · 19/07/2023 10:04

Should we shave their heads and dress them in sacks too?

That just says more about you.

I don't assume someone is silly or shallow because they want to wear makeup or heels.
You have some serious ingrained bias if you think this means a woman isn't intelligent or good at her job.

Dinopawus · 19/07/2023 10:06

I like my news read to me by people that understand it.

That's my only criteria.

Have to say I agree with PP about discrepancies in pay though. Especially when I learn what perceived gravitas is covering up.

WeetabixTowels · 19/07/2023 10:07

Isn’t demanding women look a certain way always bad - so wanting them to wear no make up is NO different to demanding they do?

😂 with no seedy private lives !

Bayleaf25 · 19/07/2023 10:09

I'm a woman who doesn't wear make-up (very often) and I literally don't give two hoots - it is up to the individual whether they wear make-up or not (male or female) or up to the tv company to use tv makeup on all presenters (male or female) if it is necessary from a lighting point of view.

Personally I've brought my daughter up to wear make-up if she wants and not if she doesn't (also shaving her legs/armpits - having here eyebrows done etc.). The best thing is for individuals to have free choice and for people like the OP to stop ridiculous judging.

LivinDaylights · 19/07/2023 10:10

The men wear makeup too! Pretty sure it's the woman's personal choice, if they wanted to wear toned down makeup they can. I wear makeup to work, that's my choice, I look pretty with it on 😚.

As someone else pointed out, so long as these women "smeared in gunk" are paid the same as the men, I really don't care.
