to think female newsreaders and presenters shouldn't wear make up

|I am absolutely sick of seeing men on TV with normal, natural looking faces, and the women sitting next to them with their faces smeared with gunk. Why can't women show normal, natural looking faces on TV too? What a horrendous disgusting message we are passing on to young girls. "You need to waste time and money smearing gunk on your face to be allowed to be seen in public"

A lot of women like wearing make-up. I very rarely do (unless going out in the evening) but I certainly would if I were on tv!
And as everyone else has said, even the men will have make up on, albeit more natural.

orangeleavesinautumn · 19/07/2023 09:14

The male presenters have make up to compensate for studio lighting, which leaves their faces looking normal and natural. The females have massively exaggerated lips in high colours, unnatural eyebrows, blue eyelids(!!! and if we were born with blue eye lids, the make up manufacturers would be selling us products to make them green or yellow or pink) and other hugely distorted and unnatural masking of their actual face

Everyone on TV wears make up, absolutely everyone.
I’d be more bothered about the fact the women are paid less.

Nailed it.

Yes she does, She also believes all mirrors should be removed from the girls toilets in schools.

Even for girls trying to manage orthodontic appliances, medical conditions, camouflage make-up, and head coverings?

Would they have go into a special room of mirrors with appropriate signage? Crikey.

Threenow · 19/07/2023 09:16

Well of course the men are wearing make-up and I've yet to see a female newsreader or presenter with "their faces smeared with gunk". What a strange post.

I knew it would be you before I even clicked on the thread.

so are you not wondering why other people are not angry about the imposition put on women to cover up their natural faces by with ugly, time consuming, expensive and environmentally damaging crap before being allowed to be seen by the public?

You also weren't born with clothes, where is your argument against those?

orangeleavesinautumn · 19/07/2023 09:17

Purplecatshopaholic · 19/07/2023 09:15

Nailed it.

There is a huge difference between make up to compensate for lighting, and make up which says "cover your face - you are not fit to be seen in public"

OP get over yourself.

sparklefresh · 19/07/2023 09:19

I do think that it should be more normal and acceptable for women to be completely 'natural', if that's what they want, but I think newsreaders are way down the list of people responsible for the messaging.

Which news channel are you watching?

I dont think I've ever seen a female news presenter with blue, green, yellow or pink eyeshadow.

I think you are exaggerating.

thespy · 19/07/2023 09:19

Yes YABU. No point repeating what has been said above.

As an aside, there are women who often go for a more natural makeup look - the fabulous Clare Balding for instance.

No one thinks they aren't fit to be seen in public with blue eyelids. They probably think 'this looks cool and compliments my outfit'. Who are you to say otherwise.

kayserah · 19/07/2023 09:20

Women need to wear on their bodies, faces and hair whatever makes them feel comfortable and happy.

You have too much time on your hands if you’re passing judgment on other people’s choices. YABVU.

Do whatever makes you feel happy.

Beezknees · 19/07/2023 09:20

YABU. Let people do what they are comfortable with. I always wear foundation because I have rosacea and hormonal acne.

I’ve never worn make up, I think people look daft wearing it, but I also think people have the right to do so and I don’t think it’s a “disgusting message” Confused

Why do people look daft because they wear make up?

Yes that is how make up works it enhances and sometimes exaggerates the facial features with different colours , I mean in sure Charlene white and Sophie reyworth don't lose braincells because they have a bit of blusher on!

EsmeSusanOgg · 19/07/2023 09:21

@orangeleavesinautumn - they're not.

Most make-up is used for the studio lighting. People who like wearing make up where it for other parts of their job/ general reports. But many people don't wear make up/ very light touch when they are doing outside broadcasts and reports. I did plenty of the Motorsports reports for our local news when I worked there and didn't bother with make up because I didn't need to compensate for studio lighting and I was out and about in muddy places. Meanwhile our male weather presenter liked a bit of foundation and a bit of subtle eyeliner whether he was in studio or out and about.

Your observations are not based on what is happening in reality in news studios.

Plus, if someone like make up they should be allowed to wear it. Same as if they're someone like me who cannot be bothered most of the time I should be allowed to skip it.

😂 that genuinely made me laugh.

thecatsthecats · 19/07/2023 09:21

It is only for a really small portion of history that happens to include now that men HAVEN'T groomed and decorated themselves as much as women. And that doesn't even go back that far. So:

  1. In the natural kingdom, there is often a decorative sex - lion's manes, peacocks vs pea hens etc.
  2. It's an abnormality for humans for men not to decorate themselves. See everything from Beau Brummel, Egyptian eyeliner, the Staffordshire hoard, Adam and the Ants onwards.

I vote for men improving their looks, and not shuffling around like unwashed potatoes. I'm weak at the knees for long hair and guy liner personally.

I wear make up because I want to

Why would I be angry? There's way more out there to get angry about.

rosao · 19/07/2023 09:22

If your smearing gunk on your face I'm sorry to be the one to tell you but you're doing it wrong.
