To Smoke Weed And Work For The NHS?

YellowSharpsBin · 13/07/2023 11:56

If you knew someone who worked in Administration for the NHS and found out they smoked week (at weekends) would you find this wrong?

YABU - This is wrong. They shouldn’t be smoking weed whilst they are employed by the NHS.

YANBU - This is perfectly okay.

It isn't great for anyone but I wouldn't bat an eyelid at this.

keepmovingon · 13/07/2023 11:57

There is a drugs and alcohol policy in the NHS and Trusts refer to this first hand.

WunWun · 13/07/2023 11:58

I'm shocked that anyone would bat an eyelid at this tbh.

Pinkdelight3 · 13/07/2023 12:00

The NHS is the biggest employer in Europe, in the top 10 on the planet. With 1.3m employees, it's pretty unremarkable that some of them smoke weed.

orangeleavesinautumn · 13/07/2023 12:02

How can someone who works in the NHS condone child slavery?

ISeeMisledPeople · 13/07/2023 12:02

Given that I used to have a doctor that took heroin, an admin worker smoking weeds seems inconsequential.

suburbophobe · 13/07/2023 12:04

Nah, wouldn't bother me but then I smoke weed myself. Legal here.

aSofaNearYou · 13/07/2023 12:04

Would not bother me in the slightest or occur to me to judge them based on their job. Would you also judge them for drinking or eating unhealthy food? People that work for the NHS aren't obliged to be paragons of health.

Food and drink aren't illegal though, so that's hardly a good comparison.

Haha yeah everyone in the NHS best not use iPhones or buy cheap clothes either

I don't understand the child slavery comment

araiwa · 13/07/2023 12:13

I used to smoke weed when I worked in NHS admin

I couldn't give less of a fuck if others do it either

PoePoePoePoe · 13/07/2023 12:15

I’d judge anyone who props up the illegal drugs trade and all the social ills it contributes to. I wouldn’t be surprised though given it’s so prevalent and most don’t seem to get the links between casual drug use and the wider issues.

araiwa · 13/07/2023 12:16

It's always nice to see more people for legalization

YellowSharpsBin · 13/07/2023 12:16

Would you also judge them for drinking or eating unhealthy food?

No. (I love junk food).

I don’t judge for smoking weed either because I am the weed smoker in question.

An extended family member has heard about it and thinks I shouldn’t be doing it whilst employed by the NHS.

Weed is legal you can buy it on prescription

cuckyplunt · 13/07/2023 12:18

A lot of weed is controlled by criminal gangs who sometimes exploit very young migrants to look after the houses where the stuff is grown.
Grow your own if you want to smoke it.

SleeplessinScarbourough · 13/07/2023 12:18

I wouldn’t want anyone who smokes weed to work anywhere. Thankfully most of them don’t

aSofaNearYou · 13/07/2023 12:19

Food and drink aren't illegal though, so that's hardly a good comparison.

It's the health factor that makes it relevant that they work for the NHS. If it were about it being illegal, it would be more obvious to have a problem with a police officer/lawmaker that smokes weed.

KeepyUppy122 · 13/07/2023 12:09

Such a wonderful MN answer.

Have you met many child cannabis slaves? It is heart breaking.

Are you aware you are probably less than 10 miles from child cannabis slaves right now, if you are in a city (and not much further if you are in the countryside).

Do you feel it is acceptable to force children to work long hours without pay, education, access to health care and proper nutrition?

What makes you feel that it is a specifically mumsnet response to object to children being treated like this.

and it is a mumsnet response, as opposed to what? Because I would call it a human response.

RampantIvy · 13/07/2023 12:21

If it was just recreationally at weekend, no I wouldn't. If they were leaving their desk for smoking breaks to smoke weed, yes I would.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 13/07/2023 12:21

Wouldn’t bother me at all.
a lot of the people I know who smoke it grow it themselves.

This is such a narrow minded answer! Would you say the same about anyone that has a glass of wine in an evening?
Cannabis is far less harmful to the individual and society than alcohol.
Plus I promise you many people in responsibility use cannabis - doctors, teachers, lawyers, therapists, lecturers on and on and you would have no idea!

That’s really not true, I know a Manager at John Lewis, someone very high up in Ford, someone who owns their own company.. , sales staff at Dunhelm, a couple of policemen..
The befuddled pothead died with the 60’s, it’s all part of the “all drugs bad” narrative. They need to fully legalise the stuff, get it quality controlled and then concentrate on the really nasty drugs.
