To Smoke Weed And Work For The NHS?

YellowSharpsBin · 13/07/2023 11:56

If you knew someone who worked in Administration for the NHS and found out they smoked week (at weekends) would you find this wrong?

YABU - This is wrong. They shouldn’t be smoking weed whilst they are employed by the NHS.

YANBU - This is perfectly okay.

Wouldn't bother me at all tbh. Weed is certainly no worse than alcohol.

As an aside, some of the biggest recreational drug takers I've ever known were medical students. I think many people are ignorant of how commonplace recreational drug use is...

Yes, the medical student I knew was quite a big recreational drug taker due to the stressful environment.

I'm shocked that anyone would bat an eyelid at this tbh.

Same.

I don't think it's anyone's business.
I know a Doctor who smokes & school teachers that smoke weed. Is it wrong? Who knows? Is it any of my business? No.

A teacher? Who cares.

A doctor, who may be in the position where his or her decisions mean life or death for someone? Not good at all.

@Pearlsaminga

Weed is not legal. Yes you can get it on prescription. But that's medicinal, not recreational. It is not legal for recreational drugs. Abortion is not legal, it is only available on prescription after being aged by two DRs that it is justified for health reasons. Neither of these things are LEGAL for recreational purposes and the simple truth is that seeking and Uber taking either or both, without medical consent, can land you in prison in the uk.

hilarious username 🤣

I’m afraid you have no idea of my experience of living with weed users. My view is not narrow minded I am well aware of the evidence based facts and first hand experiences of the effect of weed. Thank you anyway.

Just because most cannabis smokers YOU know are unemployed, does not mean most cannabis users are so.

Most people I know who smoke cannabis are employed, many of them in middle class professions.

I don’t personally smoke but it’s incredibly common to recreationally use cannabis (rather than habitual use) and be employed.

TalkingSchist · 13/07/2023 14:01

DoctorWoo · 13/07/2023 13:55

Presumably the doctor does not smoke weed whilst actively diagnosing/treating someone.

NotAllPets · 13/07/2023 14:02

I know someone who had cannabis psychosis, it ruined their life. I’m tired of this attitude that some adopt that it’s fine. I’m tired of the mums who promote themselves smoking and looking after their children whilst under the influence. No I don’t drink, no I don’t think wine-mum humour is funny either. I don’t care that you work for the NHS and take drugs, but I do care that many people think that it’s all good and then go on about smoking and drinking as a comparison - it doesn’t have to be a comparison, I don’t like the use of cannabis unless it has been medically prescribed. And yes, it is a gateway drug, I have seen the after effects of that too.

Have you met many child cannabis slaves? It is heart breaking.

Are you aware you are probably less than 10 miles from child cannabis slaves right now, if you are in a city (and not much further if you are in the countryside).

Do you feel it is acceptable to force children to work long hours without pay, education, access to health care and proper nutrition?

What makes you feel that it is a specifically mumsnet response to object to children being treated like this.

and it is a mumsnet response, as opposed to what? Because I would call it a human response.

The tech you are writing on almost certainly had child slaves somewhere in the supply/manufacturing chain.

OooohAhhhh · 13/07/2023 14:07

The Dr doesn't smoke weed no, just a smoker in general.

QuickWash · 13/07/2023 14:10

I think anyone who smokes weed is courting issues and have seen people have horrible episodes, injuries and mental health problems because of it. I hate the smell and how ubiquitous it is.

That said if someone is smoking it in their own time and I don't know about it, they do their job competently and professionally then it's absolutely nothing to do with me.

Loads of clinical staff stand smoking in uniform. Fine, tobacco is legal but it's also lethal, and they do it at work!

DoctorWoo · 13/07/2023 14:15

TalkingSchist · 13/07/2023 14:01

Cannabinoids remain in the body for many days after taking it, and can accumulate. THC can be detected sometimes 30 days after the last use. A regular user will have certainly have an accumulation.

Alcohol, by contrast, lasts a few hours.

Maddy70 · 13/07/2023 14:25

Most people I know that are in jealthcare support cannabis use

suburbophobe · 13/07/2023 14:30

long term effects of THC WEED GANJA

I've been smoking it for 52 years. Haven't lost my marbles yet.

Of course I don't smoke that disgusting skunk stuff. I once smelled it. Absolutely vile.

No I haven't met any child cannabis slaves and neither have you so dont talk wet 🙄 I blame mumsnet for peddling this myth. Its embarrassing, please stop.

Dotjones · 13/07/2023 14:39

It's pretty standard for NHS workers to use cannabis. I know a few NHS workers and every person I know who has a prescription for cannabis is among this group of NHS workers. I'm not sure if its because they know the right people to ask or just they know the right answers to give when applying for cannabis as a treatment.

It's worth noting that cannabis is increasingly available legally in the UK if you're willing to jump through some relatively simple hoops and get a private prescription. (Note that none of these NHS workers get their cannabis through the NHS, they basically have to pay RRP and get this treatment privately.)

ArcticSkewer · 13/07/2023 14:41

Your family member would be shocked to hear what the consultants get up to in their free time, then

begaydocrime42 · 13/07/2023 15:14

To be honest, long gone are the days where I care what others think of my recreational use. As long as it's working for YOU, it doesn't matter what others think. :) I know for a fact I'd rather be having a smoke and waking up the next day hangover free than drinking wine like many people do.

Re child slavery comment - child slaves make your clothes, child slaves mined the coltan for your smartphone.

Oh and to the poster that said they're not narrow minded because they lived with cannabis users or whatever and have seen the negative effects etc, well sorry but that is being narrow minded. Your personal experience isn't everyone's experience 💃

DamaskRosie · 13/07/2023 15:18

Personally I'm not wild about illegal drugs due to the harms to others that come from the trade. But that aside, I certainly don't think working for the NHS makes any difference to the morals of it- why would it? NHS staff aren't expected to be models of healthy living and have as much right to booze it up, eat cakes and sit on their arses as the rest of us, so from that perspective why not a spliff as well. Don't get stoned at work- sorted.

Yellowdays · 13/07/2023 15:22

I think it's now pretty well documented that regular cannabis use is worse for you than tobacco or wine. That's not to say the others are great. Here is the research I had in mind:

AccidentallySuckedTheStrippersDick · 13/07/2023 15:23

@Pearlsaminga

You can literally Google it. Abortion and cannabis are only legal when they are sought out through official medical routes. Neither is LEGAL.

DdraigGoch · 13/07/2023 15:57

I wouldn't be impressed by anyone who consumed cannabis, their occupation is mostly irrelevant.

Arightoldcarryabag · 13/07/2023 16:23

Just get a prescription OP.
Takes away the ethical questions (although I appreciate many people can grow their own or buy from a friend meaning no ethical issues) from people and any potential risks from your current or future employees.

It is a wonderful medicine and has many great benefits specifically for women.

eveoha · 13/07/2023 17:35

I care not a jot who uses THC etc as long as they are not dealing with anything more complex than blowing their nose while sitting on the lavatory door locked for safety 😐 And as for these sages on Mumsnet who can deduce/deuce whether a person is still under the influence or had THC in their system - I’d like to know how they do it - an overweening idea of their IQ mayhap 👍🏿☘️

Someone who has no respect for their colleagues as one consequence of the drug trade is the number of stab victims and others injured or ill who end up in hospital.
