To Smoke Weed And Work For The NHS?

YellowSharpsBin · 13/07/2023 11:56

If you knew someone who worked in Administration for the NHS and found out they smoked week (at weekends) would you find this wrong?

YABU - This is wrong. They shouldn’t be smoking weed whilst they are employed by the NHS.

YANBU - This is perfectly okay.

Have you met many child cannabis slaves? It is heart breaking.

Are you aware you are probably less than 10 miles from child cannabis slaves right now, if you are in a city (and not much further if you are in the countryside).

Do you feel it is acceptable to force children to work long hours without pay, education, access to health care and proper nutrition?

What makes you feel that it is a specifically mumsnet response to object to children being treated like this.

and it is a mumsnet response, as opposed to what? Because I would call it a human response.

What? citation needed please.
Many people have a plant they have grown themselves.

I would say sites like Temu and Shein are far more of an issue regarding childhood labour.

This is such a narrow minded answer! Would you say the same about anyone that has a glass of wine in an evening?
Cannabis is far less harmful to the individual and society than alcohol.
Plus I promise you many people in responsibility use cannabis - doctors, teachers, lawyers, therapists, lecturers on and on and you would have no idea!

I’m afraid you have no idea of my experience of living with weed users. My view is not narrow minded I am well aware of the evidence based facts and first hand experiences of the effect of weed. Thank you anyway.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 13/07/2023 12:25

I know lots of people who smoke weed and none of them are unemployed! So that is a huge blanket statement. Of course some smokers don’t work but many do!?

teachers, nurses, social workers, drivers, farmers, vets, retail workers, therapists, artists,….. all people I know who smoke. All while holding down steady jobs.

smoking doesn’t always equal a total spaced out stoner who can’t function or strung a sentence together. Most of the ones I know just have the odd joint of homegrown at the weekend.

EnglishPearFreesia · 13/07/2023 12:26

I think we'd be very very suprised to know how many people in all professions smoke weed at weekends. The NHS would be more broken than it already is if staff did not relieve their stress with cannabis. Calm down OP.

WindsChange · 13/07/2023 12:27

Exactly @CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease !

I think some posters are being deliberately obtuse about some ridiculous stereotype of cannabis users that should have died out by now given the fact it’s legalised in much of the world!

eggsbenedict23 · 13/07/2023 12:27

What makes weed any different to alcohol or cigarettes?

Well I’m sorry you’ve had a bad personal experience.
I’ve had bad personal experiences with people who drink alcohol but I wouldn’t suggest that any one that drinks alcohol should be unable to hold down a job because that would be a ridiculous extrapolation.

Madrid67 · 13/07/2023 12:32

wouldn’t want anyone who smokes weed to work anywhere. Thankfully most of them don’t
What about those who smoke tobacco, arguably more dangerous than cannabis.
Also what evidence do you have that most people who smoke it don't work? I think that's highly unlikely

To be fair it sounds like you lived next to weed abusers. Not everyone who smokes weed has a problem with it.

Its the same blanket statement that you could use about alcohol just as easy as weed.

Living next to someone who has a couple of glasses of wine in the garden at the weekend would be a very different experience than living next to a alcoholic who is drinking by 7 am and shouting at random pigeons

You’d be very surprised how many working professional people smoke weed and even take class A drugs.

Weed is much stronger than it used to be.

That said I can't get worked up about somebody in NHS admin smoking it in their own time, (as in completely off work site outside of working hours) no.

Unless you've been in relationships with "most" weed smokers, which seems quite unlikely, your personal experience doesn't mean anything.

YukoandHiro · 13/07/2023 12:34

I'll just leave you with the study into surgeons and alcoholism ... which is a bit more of a problem than a random admin worker having a smoke, I'm sure you'll agree?

ForeverFriendsAndPierrot · 13/07/2023 12:34

Well please don't be under the impression that your colleagues won't know

It smells

Bad!!

And sticks to clothing/belongings/hair. It will be on you at work.

DoctorWoo · 13/07/2023 12:36

aSofaNearYou · 13/07/2023 12:19

Food and drink aren't illegal though, so that's hardly a good comparison.

It's the health factor that makes it relevant that they work for the NHS. If it were about it being illegal, it would be more obvious to have a problem with a police officer/lawmaker that smokes weed.

It's the health factor that makes it relevant that they work for the NHS

Well that's your interpretation, but that's not what OP asked. Clearly on this thread the illegality and ethics are an issue for people.

RampantIvy · 13/07/2023 12:37

The befuddled pothead died with the 60’s

There are numerous threads on mumset from parents or other family members of people who are heavy users of weed, so I don't think this is true. Weed is a lot stronger these days, but as far as I'm concerned what other people do at weekends is none of my business, as long as it doesn't harm anyone else.

eggsbenedict23 · 13/07/2023 12:40

Weed might smell yes. But surely if it affects you, just spray some febreeze?

RagamuffinCat · 13/07/2023 12:40

My physiotherapist smells strongly of it. It is pretty gross.

Ducksinthebath · 13/07/2023 12:42

YellowSharpsBin · 13/07/2023 12:32

You’d be very surprised how many working professional people smoke weed and even take class A drugs.

That doesn't make it ok though.

It's an illegal drug with a totally unregulated supply chain. Most dealers aren't pot heads growing their own supply plus a bit more in the airing cupboard. They are part of a huge network of organised crime gangs that perpetrate the most horrendous crimes in the name of getting you your weekend buzz. And if you think you aren't contributing to that because it's all ok cause professionals do it too, then more fool you.

Onesailwait · 13/07/2023 12:42

I wouldn’t want anyone who smokes weed to work anywhere. Thankfully most of them don’t

That's not even nearly true. Pretty much everyone I know consumes weed in some form, and all hold down good jobs. It's legal and very easily accessible where I live.

aSofaNearYou · 13/07/2023 12:42

Well that's your interpretation, but that's not what OP asked. Clearly on this thread the illegality and ethics are an issue for people.

I think it was quite clear from the OP that she was specifically asking if people thought it was an issue based on her working for the NHS. People can turn it into a genera discussion about weed if they want but yes, that is what OP asked.

AgnesX · 13/07/2023 12:44

I couldn't care less where people work...there's nothing intrinsically special about being admin staff for the NHS over anywhere else.

That said weed is a filthy habit and really oughtn't to be encouraged.

eggsbenedict23 · 13/07/2023 12:45

I read on the teens channel when people talk about 16+ DC taking drugs (weed and even stronger) there's the whole "you can't stop them no matter what." "Drugs are safe in moderation. It's part of being young" speel.

IveHadItUpToHere · 13/07/2023 12:47

I'd judge you a lot for smoking weed but not for working in the NHS.

jays · 13/07/2023 12:49

It depends
