To be so sick of Pitbulls

On holidays and DP nearly had his throat ripped out on our walk home tonight, it was terrifying, owner dove in at last minute and pulled dog back. I know many people say they are great dogs, great with children, blah blah blah, but I’m just sick of encountering them and worrying about them attacking my own little dog….and my own little DP 😃

So the dog didn’t actually touch your child? How close to your child’s throat was the dog?

BrambIeberry · 09/07/2023 00:41

They need to be banned properly.

Jinnyjoes · 09/07/2023 00:42

In the heat of the moment I failed to get a tape measure out and determine exactly how close to my partner (not my child) the dog’s jaws were, apologies

YANBU
they are a banned breed for a reason.
I am scared of walking my dog as I don't know what is around the corner.

MrsElsa · 09/07/2023 03:48

YANBU

No one needs to own one, they're frighteningly dangerous.

SophieHope7 · 09/07/2023 04:05

So the Gov website says they are a banned breed....

www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/banned-dogs

Sounds absolutely traumatising for you and your family. Can you report it to the local authority? Some councils don't have a dog warden so hand these sort of attacks over to the police. I dread to think what could happen if this dog attacked a child or a smaller dog.

Hope you are ok

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/07/2023 04:25

If a dog goes for your throat and means it, unless its on a short lead that would never have permitted it to reach you, then you get bitten. Dogs react faster and move faster than we do. If the dog didn't rip your DP's throat out, then the dog never intended to do so, it just lunged/jumped/pulled in your direction.

So what really happened... an off lead dog flew through the air (or your DP was sat on the floor or is only 3ft tall?) and the owner dived, like a goalie, and grabbed some part of the airborn dogs anatomy and stopped a bite to the throat?

Or... a dog on a lead lunged in your direction, perhaps up on its hind legs and the owner pulled it back.

We do have an issue with out of control dogs, oh yes - but we also have an issue with people misreporting and over-exaggerating events.

And dogs do not typically jump up for peoples throats, unless the person is lying on the ground, and even then, it is rare in a single dog on human attack.

Hellocatshome · 09/07/2023 04:35

Where do you live to be coming into contact with Pitbulls enough times to be sick of them? If a Pitbul wanted to bite your DH it would have bitten him owner intervention or not unless the owner was the Incredible Hulk or something.

Mapples · 09/07/2023 04:50

They're ugly af too..

Sheranovermytoes · 09/07/2023 05:24

They're already an illegal breed, in the UK. Do you mean another bull breed OP?

calmcoco · 09/07/2023 05:39

There's an increasing issue with badly trained/barely controlled dogs in general.

Are you sure it was a pitbull? If it was you can report it.

Dizzywizz · 09/07/2023 05:59

@Jbrown76 pitbulls are already banned in the Uk.

Mollymalone123 · 09/07/2023 06:02

I hope you reported it to the police.I’m glad your DP was ok.any dog that goes for the throat like that is terrifying

Jbrown76 · 09/07/2023 06:06

People are getting around the dangerous dog act by cross breeding American pit bulls with other breeds to make a hybrid. The new hybrid is bigger and stronger but not illegal because it's not 100% American pit bull. The Reddit sub is about all bully breeds.

Do you mean the XL bully? They need to be banned too!

Beachbreak2411 · 09/07/2023 06:16

I hate them too. Ugly ugly dogs and scary!

Jbrown76 · 09/07/2023 06:23

Yes and 'pocket' bullies, that are patterdale terrier crossed with an American pit bull, so a smaller and squat version of a pitbull...anything with any DNA from a banned breed needs to be banned. Dogs on leads, harness muzzled, proper control of the dog, on going through training, dog licenses, fines for dog poop not being picked up, no more unscrupulous backyard breeding for profit, good gene lines and puppies that enhance the breed, people walking their dogs not having 3-4 in a house not being walked, dogs that are stimulates and socailsed, dogs surrendered if needs cannot be met, dog ownership is a privilege with responsibility not a given or a right

PopsicleHustler · 09/07/2023 06:25

I've seen someone bringing a puppy pit bull on the school run and its lunging all over the place. It might even be mixed with xl bully.
I really don't understand the need for these dogs.
There was one dog owned by a drug dealer locally who trained it to maul peoples arms who owed him money or who had an issue with.
There is a house also on the school run and there are pitbulls in there and so I say quickly run past to the kids because when I have seen the owner walking it, its pulling him down the street.

Am petrified also, and surprised that even though they are a banned breed, I still see at least a couple a week.

ARareKindaBear · 09/07/2023 07:06

People mistake various non banned breeds for pitbulls all the time. The dogs they’re referring to are usually American bulldogs, XL bullies (awful things and should be banned) or Staffordshire bull terriers.

Seeing an actual American pitbull in the UK is rare.

I saw one in New Jersey once, it was like something from a horror film. Gigantic head and so muscle defined it looked like it was on steroids

Hang on - a pit bull (which is banned in the UK) almost ripped out your husbands throat - except it didn't actually touch him??

Sounds like what you mean is a dog barked at your husband.

Top headline news there - dog barks at man.

Unless you are going to drip feed that you live in America. I can be almost sure you didn't encounter a pit bull on this or any other occasion. The few idiots who do have proper pitbulls in this country do not walk them during the day amongst members of the public for fear of being reported and the dog being destroyed. They keep them in fighting condition to terrorise gang rivals, to take on drug deals or for dog fighting.
