To be so sick of Pitbulls

On holidays and DP nearly had his throat ripped out on our walk home tonight, it was terrifying, owner dove in at last minute and pulled dog back. I know many people say they are great dogs, great with children, blah blah blah, but I’m just sick of encountering them and worrying about them attacking my own little dog….and my own little DP 😃

One of my friends has a XL bully and a cane corso, both huge dogs. She also has a 6,3 and 18 month old children.
I have been refusing to go to her house for play dates anymore and she can't understand why. I have grown up with dogs and have 2 myself but I am so nervous around her fifa.

As long as those dogs are well loved, trained and excercised, you have nothing to worry about.

Luckydip1 · 09/07/2023 11:21

They are used as defence/attack dogs, why doesn't the government ban them?

Shall we ban German shephards too?

What about Doberman and Rottweiler breeds?

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 11:18

@Jinnyjoes well now you've calmed down from this traumatic event (and provoked a massive reaction) why don't you tell us what REALLY happened?

I think we define massive reaction a little differently, but sure: Pitbull type dog lunged towards DP and definitely seemed on the attack, owner grabbed his collar and pulled him back. I feel my tone was considerably less dramatic than several of the responses here, your own included, but here we are.

@GeriatricMumma I'd happily those breeds too, yes.

supersonicginandtonic · 09/07/2023 11:24

@GeriatricMumma that's the thing. They hardly get walked, she argues that she had a huge garden. She is petite too so she would be unable to control them.
I don't doubt they're well loved but it still makes me nervous

What about hunting breeds?

What about labs?

Then she's a fucking idiot and it's a recipe for disaster.

PopsicleHustler · 09/07/2023 11:25

@GeriatricMumma is it just a case if where I can ring the police and say I have seen a pitbull puppy on the school run near X ROAD. I don't know the owner, just see them as parents on the school run. It's definitely a pit bull. Doesn't look anything like a Staffordshire terrier.

@Cheeseandlobster its just one path and then a busy road unfortunately. He isn't outside in the garden when we go past. I just quickly scoot past with the children, because the gate is never closed either. I worry if the owner opens the door to take bins out or whatever the dog could jump out and charge down the short path to us. I am very nervous around most dogs also. Especially bigger breeds.

You said you walk passed the house? Give the address

WillowtreeHouse · 09/07/2023 11:27

I've been a dog owner all my adult life and always had them as a child. I have two at the moment and I adore my dogs. I am sick to death of some dog owners blindly defending all dogs no matter the circumstances. The OP is no doubt incorrect in her description of the breed, but there are many PB crosses which are not banned so perhaps not knowing the precise breed is understandable.

I'm not sick of pitbulls, I'm sick of shitty owners of any breed of dog who don't know how to look after their dogs properly. They do no research into their breed/s so have no idea what they need in terms of food/exercise and company and its shit.

Most dogs are wonderful and most owners are too, but you just need to look at how some folk bring their children up to see how little attention their dog will get.

Because banning breeds doesn't actually get rid of dangerous dogs.

Pitbulls are illegal in the UK, so people bred XL bullies instead.
Get rid of XL bullies, and something else will come along to take their place.

I completely agree with this and you expressed the problem far better than I.

There are loads of legal bully-type breeds that aren't Staffies, though. It's far more likely to be one of those than an illegal Pitbull.

Don't forget those who are stupid enough to pick up their small dog because of their own anxiety or run / teach their kids to run passed dogs 🤨

PoliticallyIncorrectHitchling · 09/07/2023 11:35

I hate them, their face looks so frightening and devilish, very ugly dogs.

Luckydip1 · 09/07/2023 11:40

I don't understand why the government hasn't banned XL bullies, what is it waiting for? Also, do the police actually enforce the bans, or do they wait for a child to be killed and the put the dog to sleep?

StefanosHill · 09/07/2023 11:42

I didn't. I said I was sick of shitty owners of any breed.

As far as teaching children to run past a dog; yes it's idiotic, but dogs also need to be trained well enough not to react to someone running past them. Dogs need to be trained properly, again, an owner issue. Runners frequently pass is on our walks and my dogs never react, because they've been trained well.

ZebraDilemma · 09/07/2023 11:46

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 11:15

Did it react? Bite or bark?

Pretty sure a sausage dog would in that situation

You’re spectacularly missing the point, a Sausage Dog is highly unlikely to maim or kill you.

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 11:49

Neither is an xl bully if it's adequately trained.

Firstly, banning breeds doesn't reduce the number of dog attacks. There are already four banned breeds in the UK and dog attacks are at the highest they've ever been (though this is partially due to the number of dogs).

Secondly, "XL bully" isn't a registered breed - it's just a mixture of a random selection of other breeds. You can't really go around taking dogs off people just because they look a certain way (as tempting as it might be).

All that happened when the government banned Pitbulls is that people bred XL bullies (and other bully mixes) to replace them. Ban "XL bullies" and the same thing will happen again.

I wish there was an easy answer.

You put it perfectly and yes, there’s no easy answer, it’s plainly a complex issue. Suffice it to say I’d presumed I’d get maximum 3 responses to my post, but people are plainly quite exercised by this.

I'm guessing the poster meant that the level of damage inflicted is likely to be very different, in the event of an attack by either breed.

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 11:56

Of course, but damage caused is irrelevant if it doesn't happen.

A golden retriever inflicted serious damage on my Doberman (who was completely unreactive)

Training is everything
