To be so sick of Pitbulls

Jinnyjoes · 09/07/2023 00:35

On holidays and DP nearly had his throat ripped out on our walk home tonight, it was terrifying, owner dove in at last minute and pulled dog back. I know many people say they are great dogs, great with children, blah blah blah, but I’m just sick of encountering them and worrying about them attacking my own little dog….and my own little DP 😃

I'm calling BS on this too: very unlikely to be a pitbull, and probably nowhere near the DH's throat. I suspect it was a lunge and the dog was yanked back, causing its front legs to leave the ground.

But there are too many of these large bull breed types (Am bully, XL bully and hybrids of those with other breeds eg cane corso) and almost all of them are owned by idiots and lowlifes.

It's the idiots and lowlifes that are the real cause of these issues imo, but as we can't ban idiots and lowlifes, we'll just have to ban the dogs. Although they'll just move on to another large, powerful breed that will do the same job.

Oliotya · 09/07/2023 09:23

Whether or not the dog was actually a pit bull, or actually going for his neck is irrelevant. These giant, intimidating dogs are everywhere and there's no excuse for them to be anywhere near anyone else's personal space.

Unless you are going to drip feed that you live in America. I can be almost sure you didn't encounter a pit bull on this or any other occasion. The few idiots who do have proper pitbulls in this country do not walk them during the day amongst members of the public for fear of being reported and the dog being destroyed. They keep them in fighting condition to terrorise gang rivals, to take on drug deals or for dog fighting.

This! 🧐

Nor is there any excuse for a snappy Jack Russell, over excited lab, spaniel, cockerpoo.

But guess what, happens all of the time.

My dog was bitten by golden retriever who DID actually rip his face!!

Stop stereotyping and projecting YOUR fears.

Ps I don't own nor do I wish to own a Bully breed - which FYI includes Frenchies.

What am I projecting? Did I say it was OK for labs or jack Russell's? No I'd didn't.
If it was up to me, there'd be far fewer dogs of any kind, and they'd all be on short leads in public.
I don't discriminate in my dislike for dogs in my personal space.
But I'd rather my chances against a cockerpoo than an XL bully.

@Oliotya 'giant intimidating dogs'

Feel the same way about a golden retriever??
What about a Great Dane?

A golden retrievers jaw isn't bigger than my head.
But I still don't want it in my space.

Pit bulls are banned / illegal. Have been for years now.

This is certainly an issue but you do not get a sensible conversation about it by starting a thread about a pitbull nearly ripping your husbands throat out.

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 10:10

@Hellocatshome

Exactly. Massive exaggeration of what happened and completely incorrect breed named too.

waterlego · 09/07/2023 10:17

Pit bulls are illegal. However I got chatting to a man recently (I was out walking and he wanted to pet my dog and asked what breed he is).

Then he said ‘I’ve got a Red Nose Pit which I rescued. I just tell everyone she’s a Staffie’. He also said ‘she’s as good as gold, I don’t even have to put her on a lead’. I didn’t really know what to say to any of that so just made my excuses and left. I couldn’t report the guy to anyone because I had no idea who he was and he had told me he lived in a different county.

So clearly there are some about, quite possibly being passed off as other breeds. It made me wonder though if he never takes the dog to the vet because surely a vet would have a good chance of clocking the breed and surely they’d have a duty to report. Or are there shady vets who will treat illegal breeds?

More than likely he is talking shit and that's what he has been told.

Probably thinks it makes him look 'ard

I've seen someone bringing a puppy pit bull on the school run and its lunging all over the place. It might even be mixed with xl bully.
I really don't understand the need for these dogs.
There was one dog owned by a drug dealer locally who trained it to maul peoples arms who owed him money or who had an issue with.
There is a house also on the school run and there are pitbulls in there and so I say quickly run past to the kids because when I have seen the owner walking it, its pulling him down the street.

Am petrified also, and surprised that even though they are a banned breed, I still see at least a couple a week.

Encouraging your kids to run past is not good advice as it will only draw attention to them if the dog is out. Can you not encourage them to cross the road or walk a different way?

How do you know they are pitbulls?

If you are so sure, why haven't you reported an illegal breed to the police (which you can do completely anonymously)

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/07/2023 04:25

If a dog goes for your throat and means it, unless its on a short lead that would never have permitted it to reach you, then you get bitten. Dogs react faster and move faster than we do. If the dog didn't rip your DP's throat out, then the dog never intended to do so, it just lunged/jumped/pulled in your direction.

So what really happened... an off lead dog flew through the air (or your DP was sat on the floor or is only 3ft tall?) and the owner dived, like a goalie, and grabbed some part of the airborn dogs anatomy and stopped a bite to the throat?

Or... a dog on a lead lunged in your direction, perhaps up on its hind legs and the owner pulled it back.

We do have an issue with out of control dogs, oh yes - but we also have an issue with people misreporting and over-exaggerating events.

And dogs do not typically jump up for peoples throats, unless the person is lying on the ground, and even then, it is rare in a single dog on human attack.

This. The dog clearly was not trying to bite.

Jbrown76 · 09/07/2023 06:06

People are getting around the dangerous dog act by cross breeding American pit bulls with other breeds to make a hybrid. The new hybrid is bigger and stronger but not illegal because it's not 100% American pit bull. The Reddit sub is about all bully breeds.

The law actually bans pitbull "types" - if any dog fits the measurements, it can be banned (and destroyed) even if it doesn't contain any pit bull.

I doubt you are te expert you think you are

pyjamasallday22 · 09/07/2023 10:39

A powerful dog should never be off lead. And in busy areas should be on a very very short lead. And muzzled if they are aggressive. We encountered one of these breeds in our park recently. It ran straight up to my baby in her buggy. The owners were completely chilled and saying 'oh she's friendly' almost as if they wanted to prove a point that it's totally ok for these dogs to run around and approach people because 'look she hasn't hurt anyone'.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 09/07/2023 10:40

Lots of people will say their dog is a Pitbull because they think it makes them "cool" to own a banned breed. Most "pitbulls" in the UK are a mix of breeds like Staffordshire Terriers, American Bulldogs, Dogue de Bordeaux, Cane Corso and various other mastiff/bully type breeds.

As for the vets - you can just register your dog as a mixed breed. They won't really have any reason to investigate the breed as in most cases it's irrelevant to any vet treatment.

No one should be having to change their route or evolve strategies not to get attacked by dogs - get rid of these fucking stupid breeds now

ThirteenTog · 09/07/2023 10:41

The irresponsible ignorant dog owners are here on the thread. They are nitpicking details. When the issue is that a big aggressive dog jumped up at a man who was not provoking them. It’s unacceptable.

The only defence thick owners have is disbelieving the OP. Like they pretend people don’t have their picnics ruined etc.

The intelligent responsible owners accept these incidents are happening, feel frustrated by the kinds of incidents in the OP and keep their own dogs on lead.

Rainbowsandrainclouds1 · 09/07/2023 10:45

The hyperbole in this post means anyone with any kind of sense won't take it seriously.

As others have said the chances of it being a Pit Bull are vanishingly rare. More likely youve mistaken an XL Bully, American Bully, Cane Corso or Mastiff. If any of those dogs had aggressivly gone for your husbands throat this would be a very different thread.

Do you like dogs and understanddog behaviour? I appreciate if you don't then any dog lunging at you could be terrifying, but, the dog sounds well controlled as it didnt actually touch you.

Just incase you think I'm massivly pro large muscular breeds, I'm not. They are difficult to manage and should require a special license to ensure you have fully understanding of the breed and have paid to attend courses to learn to manage them.

Yep, and in fairness I wasn’t going for 100% accuracy, was not writing a police report, just expressing that I’m sick of these dogs not being muzzled or on a good strong lead - whatever variation on bull terrier they are. There are a lot of them where I live and I’ve had to change my walking habits to protect my little doggy who has no sense and growls at them 😂

It won’t have been a pit bull. People are genuinely quite surprised to see that Pit bulls don’t look like they think. They are banned in the UK, for a start.
It will have been a bully type breed.
