To be so sick of Pitbulls

Jinnyjoes · 09/07/2023 00:35

On holidays and DP nearly had his throat ripped out on our walk home tonight, it was terrifying, owner dove in at last minute and pulled dog back. I know many people say they are great dogs, great with children, blah blah blah, but I’m just sick of encountering them and worrying about them attacking my own little dog….and my own little DP 😃

Popsiclehustler - any puppy on a lead would “lunge all over the place” that’s what puppies on leads do as they are learning.

also agree with PP it is a very bad idea to get your children to run past the dogs in the garden.

The hyperbole in this post means anyone with any kind of sense won't take it seriously.

As others have said the chances of it being a Pit Bull are vanishingly rare. More likely youve mistaken an XL Bully, American Bully, Cane Corso or Mastiff. If any of those dogs had aggressivly gone for your husbands throat this would be a very different thread.

Do you like dogs and understanddog behaviour? I appreciate if you don't then any dog lunging at you could be terrifying, but, the dog sounds well controlled as it didnt actually touch you.

Just incase you think I'm massivly pro large muscular breeds, I'm not. They are difficult to manage and should require a special license to ensure you have fully understanding of the breed and have paid to attend courses to learn to manage them.

I wouldn't classify a dog that's lunging at other people to be well controlled. Regardless if they managed to touch other people.

waterlego · 09/07/2023 10:55

@GeriatricMumma and @cinnamonfrenchtoast, good points. It hadn’t occurred to me that someone would lie about having a Pitbull that way round if you see what I mean! I could see people denying they have one to avoid getting in trouble but just hadn’t thought that people would pretend to have one for bragging rights but you’re probably right.

But we have no idea how close it actually got to OPs husband. The whole post is over dramatic and the dog could have been 10 ft away. The dog was on a lead, a lead is to control the dog when behavioral commands fail. Dogs can lunge when they get excited but this dog did not touch anyone therefore its owner was in control.

SwansLake · 09/07/2023 10:58

I love dogs. I've had them all my life, mostly terriers.

However, just like you can't train a terrier not to chase small, furry animals, I really don't believe you can train 'fighting' breeds not to fight or show aggression. Its part of their make up.

I also think when it goes wrong, it goes very wrong. The larger bully breeds can easily kill a fully grown man, even with others trying to pull it off. Whereas, an aggressive jack russell can be taken down by an adult/group of adults pretty quickly (in my experience).

Add bad dog ownership into the mix and it's game over.

The irresponsible ignorant dog owners are here on the thread. They are nitpicking details. When the issue is that a big aggressive dog jumped up at a man who was not provoking them. It’s unacceptable.

The only defence thick owners have is disbelieving the OP. Like they pretend people don’t have their picnics ruined etc.

The intelligent responsible owners accept these incidents are happening, feel frustrated by the kinds of incidents in the OP and keep their own dogs on lead.

It's not about 'nit picking' it's about having the crutical thinking skills to see that OPs account is at best over exaggerated and at worse a complete lie to get people frothing over Pit Bulls.

It also doesnt mean that I think OP is lying but if you don't like dogs then the smallest thing can be over blown as something else.

Nah. It’s not nice to have a huge aggressive dog of any breed leap towards you even if on lead. And then be accused of hyperbole. Accusing people of exaggerating is the hallmark of a shit owner.

@Oliotya 'giant intimidating dogs'

Feel the same way about a golden retriever??
What about a Great Dane?

Ah yes, the famous fighting dogs .. .. retrievers. (clue is in the name) and Great Danes.

Both bred for years for fighting bulls and other dogs.

PeachesOnTheBeaches · 09/07/2023 11:07

YANBU. They all need rounding up and putting down.

Yep, golden retriever with big stick in his mouth/bull terrier with your arm in his mouth, exact same

Love your assumption I'm a shit owner.

I'm not an owner at the moment as my lifestyle doesn't afford the time to correctly look after and train one.

There's another thread in active at the moment which offers a far more rational and constructive op on the topic.

HaveSomeIntrospect · 09/07/2023 11:12

@Jinnyjoes so you admit that you don’t actually know the breed of the dog and you were not accurate about the incident in your op?

I don’t think it’s funny, the smiley face on your last post is a joke!

I am going to report this post. Posters who are deliberately inflammatory in outright lie should be banned

I've seen someone bringing a puppy pit bull on the school run and its lunging all over the place. It might even be mixed with xl bully.
I really don't understand the need for these dogs.
There was one dog owned by a drug dealer locally who trained it to maul peoples arms who owed him money or who had an issue with.
There is a house also on the school run and there are pitbulls in there and so I say quickly run past to the kids because when I have seen the owner walking it, its pulling him down the street.

Am petrified also, and surprised that even though they are a banned breed, I still see at least a couple a week.

Why on Earth would you do that?

If the dogs are truly dangerous, all you've achieved is teaching your children to act like food prey and trigger the dogs' hunting response.

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 11:12

@TheoTheopolis23 so you are saying ALL bully breeds are bred for fighting?

Whether a Great Dane or golden retriever is bred for fighting or not is irrelevant - they can and do bite.

What about a GSD or mallinois bred to bite by the police - should they be put to sleep?!

Just a post to trigger all of the usual stupid responses from people who are scared of dogs or own untrained yappy cockapoos who seem to be allowed to jump all over people because they are friendly 🤨

xyz111 · 09/07/2023 11:14

Agree. A man got on the London Underground with 2 huge ones yesterday. It was a packed carriage, boiling hot. Everyone just looked at them and you could see people edging away. I was right next to them and it made me hang on even tighter to make sure I didn't accidentally fall into one! Don't bring any dog on a packed train!! Especially ones with mouths bigger than a child's head

Did it react? Bite or bark?

Pretty sure a sausage dog would in that situation

HaveSomeIntrospect · 09/07/2023 11:17

Posters are getting pit bulls and American bully’s mixed up.
know which dog you are complaining about.

was the dog in the op on a lead or not? @Jinnyjoes

Great Danes were bred to take down Wild Boar. Animals that can weigh between 16 and 30 stone and have tusks that measure 3-5 inches long.

HerMammy · 09/07/2023 11:18

I've seen someone bringing a puppy pit bull on the school run and its lunging all over the place. It might even be mixed with xl bully.
So you don't know the breed, just making assumptions, pitbull isn't a distinct breed, hence why DLA
officers with their outdated and flawed legislation use a measuring tape in an attempt to identify a dog based on appearance rather than behaviour.
MN likes to disparage the DM but when it comes to dogs these threads always read like a DM
comment section.

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 11:18

@Jinnyjoes well now you've calmed down from this traumatic event (and provoked a massive reaction) why don't you tell us what REALLY happened?

supersonicginandtonic · 09/07/2023 11:20

One of my friends has a XL bully and a cane corso, both huge dogs. She also has a 6,3 and 18 month old children.
I have been refusing to go to her house for play dates anymore and she can't understand why. I have grown up with dogs and have 2 myself but I am so nervous around her fifa.

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 11:21

@NeverDropYourMooncup

Exactly - just another comment from someone who sees breeds in a fucking Disney film and thinks they are harmless.

Clearly Theo doesn't know much about those breeds. Including retrievers who can react very badly in situations where they resource guard

Luckydip1 · 09/07/2023 11:21

They are used as defence/attack dogs, why doesn't the government ban them?
