To be so sick of Pitbulls

Jinnyjoes · 09/07/2023 00:35

On holidays and DP nearly had his throat ripped out on our walk home tonight, it was terrifying, owner dove in at last minute and pulled dog back. I know many people say they are great dogs, great with children, blah blah blah, but I’m just sick of encountering them and worrying about them attacking my own little dog….and my own little DP 😃

Yes of course, the terrifying Doberman and Rottweiler

Coming from someone who has clearly no knowledge of the breeds once again.

Say you know fuck all about dogs without saying you know fuck all about dogs 😂

Say you're a silly chav without saying you're a silly chav.

It's really not the job of anyone to modify their behaviour to placate your dog. It's your job to keep your dog away from other people/dogs and under your control. How you do that is your own affair but the second your dog approached someone uninvited you have failed at your job.

Quite. There is a real ‘victim-blaming’ culture around dog attacks.

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 14:44

@TheoTheopolis23

Define a chav.

I'm a middle class earner in an affluent area with a well trainer Doberman

I wear trainers and jogging bottoms on a dog walk - will that do for you?

Folioh · 09/07/2023 14:44

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 14:30

So xl bully breeds who are trained are ok then?

The police don’t use XL bullies.

TheoTheopolis23 · 09/07/2023 14:45

*Yes of course, the terrifying Doberman and Rottweiler

Yeah those breeds are widely considered soft, approachable, malleable, safe around kids, and suitable for all sorts of owners. That's why they're used as guard and attack dogs.

For someone who claims to have such immense and superior knowledge of dog breeds, you dont half come out with some nonsense.

Your making an absolute fool of yourself on this thread, maybe take your dogs out for a walk. (Bet you couldn't hold your Rottweiler if it really wanted to go).

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 14:45

@Folioh my question was:
Are xl bullies who are trained ok then?

Stop deflecting the question and answer it

Honestly I just want to know the thought process behind the person who buys a Pitbull. There are so many other dog breeds, that don't have the potential (and track record) of killing or seriously injuring people. Why do they choose them?

It's the same "thought process" that leads them to buy the trainers, cars, tattoos, dope etc they buy.

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 14:48

@TheoTheopolis23

My dog (Doberman - keep up) is well trained.

It's not difficult to keep control of a big dog with the correct harness and soft mussel

Really showing your lack of knowledge again.

A dog being used as a guard dog doesn't mean every one of those breeds is a guard dog.

If it does, someone might want to tell my dog.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 09/07/2023 14:48

nopenotplaying · 09/07/2023 06:13

Do you mean the XL bully? They need to be banned too!

Unfortunately this breeding is the new money laundering. These breeders/sperm traders are setting up canine 'fertility' clinics selling XL bully sperm and the pups go for upto £300,000. Irresponsible and seemingly unchecked. V good panorama about it all recently. I feel so sad for these dogs and the children and babies they kill and maim.

Once again, what breeds do you own?

The only one showing their clear lack of knowledge on how to control a dog is you.

But you carry on pretending for the crowd.

You shouldn't be using a "soft muzzle" on any dog unless it's being treated at the vet for a very short period of time.

Though I should add that, bizarrely, my childhood ballet teacher's family had an English bull terrier. (They were space cadets though).

It mauled her daughter and left her with a big scar on her lip/chin.

They destroyed it.

Then bought another one.

Just lol smh.

There is a type of space cadet "middle class" person that gets these and similar attack dogs too.

We use a soft mussle to walk the dog a short 3 minute walk to the field where it is removed.

Nobody needs to pretend for the crowd on this thread .... Pretty much every si glad poster on here disagrees with your posts.

Read the room.

And your "superior knowledge" is being debunked as you type.

@Folioh my question was:
Are xl bullies who are trained ok then?

This was your question. Have a think what the ‘then’ implies? It refers back to and draws comparison with the police trained dogs you mentioned earlier. That’s how conversation works.

My opinion on xl bullies, trained or not, is not at issue here. We were discussing police dogs.

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 14:54

@Folioh

The post is about xl bullies

AlfietheSchnauzer · 09/07/2023 14:54

YANBU - I'm a Dog lover but I despise Pitbulls, Staffies and any similar fighting breed. The Ne'er Do Wells often can be seen with them as they think it makes them look 'hard.....'

🙊

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 14:56

@TheoTheopolis23

I'm not sure a Mumsnet forum of AIBU's is the room I need to follow tbh.

Im far happier to take the advice of my vet and dog training professionals

GeriatricMumma · 09/07/2023 14:53

You shouldn't be doing that. If your dogs need to wear a muzzle it should wear a properly fitted basket muzzle to allow it to breathe and pant as normal.

TimeToMoveIt · 09/07/2023 15:02

All children should know how to behave around dogs, by secondary school they are walking by themselves and around here the majority are walking through a big field so you never know what they might come across, although surprisingly I've not seen any XL bullies yet

Although it's better than back in the day when dogs seemed to just walk themselves and the local scrap yards German sheperds were forever escaping and running around the school field

Folioh · 09/07/2023 15:04

@GeriatricMumma , no love, this is the post that I responded to. It’s about police dogs isn’t it?

In my first answer to you I highlighted the question I was responding to for you, to help you understand.

GeriatricMumma · Today 11:12
^^
@TheoTheopolis23 so you are saying ALL bully breeds are bred for fighting?
^^
Whether a Great Dane or golden retriever is bred for fighting or not is irrelevant - they can and do bite.

What about a GSD or mallinois bred to bite by the police - should they be put to sleep?!

see, I’ve highlighted it again for you because I think the discussion is going a little too fast for you isn’t it? Don’t worry, plenty of people have difficulty with written comprehension.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 09/07/2023 15:14

For all those saying if a dog went for your throat it would get you so if it didn't you are lying or exaggerating - that is just not true. 30 years ago I was visiting a relative - she was in bed ill and I was told to go up and check on her. Did not realize the dog (German Shepard, mainly her husbands who did not like me but was not at home) was up there. I knocked and walked in to the bedroom after being called in. The dog went nuts (it was a very hot day which may have also been part of the problem). I acted instinctively but looking back realized I had turned myself sideways and braced myself. It shredded the arm and front of the clothing I was wearing before being pulled off so I could get out and lock myself in the bathroom until it was removed. I still have a scar on my breast but I have no doubt if I was not wearing a very baggy tee shirt it would have done a lot worse.

pollykitty · 09/07/2023 15:22

I have mixed feelings about them, my brother and SIL have always had pit bulls and their dogs were/are the softest sweetest muppets in the world. And yes they had kids too. When my DD was little she played with their pitbull for hours at a time and the dog was so gentle. We then got a labrador who is friendly and swet but actually can be a bit brutish if you have something he wants (like a stick). Having said all that every time I see a dog attack story it’s either a pit bull or staffy. I suspect these dogs are not well trained and have dominance issues. I think with pit bulls you have to make sure they know they are the bottom of the pack.
