To think the Mumsnet coronation logo is quite mean?

Disclaimer: I’m not British and have no skin in the monarchy game, but I do think the ears are a bit much.

To think the Mumsnet coronation logo is quite mean?

If this was Family Fortunes, and the question was:

”We surveyed 100 people, and asked them ‘name something Charles is famous for being teased about.’”

And the answer would be

90% ears
5% his affair
5% talking to plants.

The idea that people on this thread are only upset by the logo because of deep-seated prejudice towards people with noticeable ears is laughable.

You want MN management to function at the intellectual level of Family Fortunes??
Some of us had higher expectations

Random789 · 06/05/2023 09:39

I'm amazed at so many threads and posts objecting to this very mild bit of fun. Flappy ears have been part of Charles cartoons forever. Can't help thinking that the objections are part of the hair-trigger oversensitivity we all seem to be developing to ANY kind of communication that gives us an opportunity to become offended.

Yes, it's unpleasant. I'm not interested in the royal family, but this logo does give the message that it's okay to taunt people about their physical appearance. By all means give people a hard time if they don't behave well, but not because you think their ears look funny.

But Charles doesn’t behave well - so it’s fair game

JamSandle · 06/05/2023 09:41

I think it's really bad taste.

No, I was using to point out to the few random posters who think that people are only seeing offence because they themselves have issues with people with prominent ears. It’s a ludicrous suggestion. Everyone knows it’s the physical characteristic Charles is known for and has been teased for all his life.

Thanks for clarifying

Not fair game to mock him for something unrelated.

Like people who are annoyed with some stranger always describe them as being a 'fat cow'. Even other MN responding to a reported interaction on a thread will describe the other person as a fat cow, becasue they didn't behave well. It's reinforcing the association in so many people's minds that physical attributes are a reflection of personality and what the person is really like.

If you don't think he behaves well, then object to what he's done or said, rather than what he looks like.

I do also think the mocking of him for things said in private conversations that were not expected to be broadcast is also unfair.

I don't think he cares about what any of us think, but it's more the way that other people end up learning that it's acceptable to mock people for things that is such a problem.

hereiamagainn · 06/05/2023 09:47

I’m a republican
And I agree the logo is mean-spirited.
I haven’t seen another logo like it anywhere, on any other platform.

Dontcallmescarface · 06/05/2023 09:48

I think some posters are spectacularly missing the point here. MN is a site where there are many users who have been bullied/laughed at/humiliated by comments made about their physical appearance. To have a site that apparently now condones that behaviour by having a logo that (in their opinion), is funny, gives a clear signal to others that it's ok to mock those people on here. THAT is what's wrong with it, it's not people needing to "take a joke" or "not get so uptight", it's the fact that on here we can now be pointed to and laughed at with MN's blessing. How anybody can think that's ok is beyond me, but I guess those that do will be the ones doing the pointing and laughing.

NurseCranesRolodex · 06/05/2023 09:50

God that's awful! Depressing, nasty and body shaming. Get it off Mumsnet FFS.

MayBeeJuneSoon · 06/05/2023 09:51

Daft mare!

sweatervest · 06/05/2023 09:51

I think it's totally pathetic, mean and idiotic and I'm not even a charles fan but mocking someone's ears is so stupid

Theimpossiblegirl · 06/05/2023 09:51

It's not a good look for the site. I think it's annoyed a lot of users.

Personally, I think it's a bit tacky.

FangsForTheMemory · 06/05/2023 09:20

My goodness, I’ve never seen so many ‘I’m not a monarchist buts . . .’ in my life.

Get a grip. The whole coronation circus is costing the country millions and it’s what Charles wanted. Don’t tell me about protocol. He wanted this.

Wouldn't have mattered if he did or not, he was born to it and didn't choose it. It isn't a political statement. It's just spiteful body shaming.

emmy4 · 06/05/2023 09:57

Very spiteful and not funny at all.

CheriseNuland · 06/05/2023 09:57

Not mad on the way he’s behaved over the years. But I was a bit surprised by this when I saw it. There may be parents of children struggling with prominent ears or other body image issues, or site users themselves.

I get that his ears are often portrayed as comical but it is known that he was bullied in school because of them (amongst other things, obvs). Not a dealbreaker for me, but not quite in the spirit of the site either.

Exactly.

Let’s have a long-awaited definition of “not in the spirit” from MNHQ and a list of people in the public eye who are fair game and those who aren’t, with an explanation of why there’s a difference. Can’t wait.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 06/05/2023 10:05

ShimmeringShirts · 06/05/2023 09:14

Said it on a previous thread but DS has been bullied constantly at school for his ears, they’re a bit larger and stick out. He’s only 12 and keeps asking me if a doctor will “fix” them, has got it into his head that’s all anyone will ever notice about him. MN can get to fuck with their nasty bullying logo.

That's really sad, hope your son is ok.

@mnhq Granted Charles is in a protected bubble but most kids are not and bullying is still bullying.

CheriseNuland · 06/05/2023 10:09

Quoronation · 06/05/2023 08:21

Not being funny but is ears aren't even that prominent a feature

No they’re not now. He’s either ‘grown into them’ or had surgery. They were when he was younger.

RowenaRosewood · 06/05/2023 10:10

Disgusting, mean and unprofessional.

Let's hope all these threads about it make it to the newspapers, it might make MN buck their ideas up.

RagzRebooted · 06/05/2023 10:12

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/05/2023 01:32

No I don't really like it. But then I don't really like the royals so nothing would have been my preference.

Same. I'm actually very anti-monarchy, but I spotted the logo as soon as I logged on and was quite shocked. It's a bit much! I don't like Charles, but mocking him for having big ears? Aren't we grown-ups, here?

CheriseNuland · 06/05/2023 10:12

If you compare very recent pictures to ones from when he got married the first time or that period, his ears look completely different.

Steakandquinoa · 06/05/2023 10:14

Disappointing.

kittensinthekitchen · 06/05/2023 10:14

It's getting increasingly easy to see on MN who were the bullies, or the parents of them, isn't it?
