I enjoy anything supernatural (not really a fan of gore and blood etc). I like anything along the lines of,

The Conjuring
Incidious
Brahms

Wasn’t really a fan of,

Midsummer
Hereditary
The Witch

Hopefully you get the jist otherwise we’ll be here all day! Any suggestions welcome:)

Not so much supernatural, but more psychological, the film mindhunters with val Kilmer and Jonny Lee Miller.

More supernatural horror, the film ghost ship, with the actor from the good wife show.

I've just watched Pope's Exorcist at cinema was brilliant

Is that the one set in Pontefract?

Yes, it is.

I was absolutely terrified by ‘Us’ (Jordan Peele). Can’t really look at scissors now without getting a shiver.

What did you think about the ending of Us? I have so many questions so I’m off to Google!😂

@BlackBarbies also with you on US! Get Out wants bad, but Us missed the mark entirely.

I can't believe you've never seen the others! I didn't suggest it because I assumed you'd have seen it already. It's up there with The Conjuring for me.

I'm currently watching Speak No Evil thanks to this thread. Nothing scary had happened yet but I'm enjoying it so far and it's creepy 🙈

Black Phone
Smile

I guess it depends on what streaming services you have available to you

I really enjoyed Black Phone,it had such an 80s vibe. Husband thought it was ridiculous but it's been a long time since I've enjoyed a film as much.

Interestingly it's inspired by It. Which makes sense, the balloon, clown, sibling going missing etc.

But I think It is shit (remake is marginally 'okay').

UmbilicusProfundus · 08/04/2023 23:38

How scary is Sinister? I want to watch it, but I can’t quite bring myself to do it. I’d feel a lot better if my DH would watch it with me but he’s too much of a wuss.

The ending of Speak No Evil is something that has stayed with me. Not what I would call a traditional horror but a very good film, it sort of creeps up on you.

Similar level to Conjuring/Insidious.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 08/04/2023 23:40

@ReginaPerrin that's good to know because I usually don't watch horror at night. But I can't sleep and fancy a thrill. I live alone so really try my best not to scare myself silly!

Shakeamaker · 08/04/2023 23:42

Babadock
it follows
ouija
ghost stories
Let the right one in

Like what the heck is Us even about?! And the plot twist at the end, what was that?? That film made no sense at all. May need to give Jordan Peele films a swerve.

I googled The Others and it looks so familiar but I can’t remember the storyline so I’ll have to give it a watch. The Conjuring is great, really grabbed my attention from the start.

Enjoy Speak No Evil! It doesn’t sound like my type of film but let me know what you think:)

It won’t give you a sleepless night as it’s not a supernatural ghosty type film, it’s just a very good chiller - enjoy!

MaryJean87 · 08/04/2023 23:45

Crimson Peak is scary without being gory.

I personally found it so tense🫣 It may be because in The Conjuring there’s more than one person in the house. In Sinister it’s just focused on one (just about two) characters. That adds to the suspense for me because they’re on their own!!

I’d watch it in daylight but I also wouldn’t watch it by myself haha. Some scenes have stuck with me for ages

It's pretty much all jump scares, so it really depends on what you find more scary; subtle it is not.

For added entertainment you can play the game where you match Ethan Hawke drink for drink, but you'll probably have to get someone to tell you the end. Grin

I’m not ignoring the suggestions btw! Writing all the interesting looking ones on my phone

Each to her own, but I put Babadook and It Follows along with OP's 'did not like' horrors. They weren't scary, and It Follows was borderline stupid. Went to see it at the cinema and majority of the room was laughing. It was like a student film.

SocksAndTheCity · 09/04/2023 00:00

Just to add to the Aussie recommendations, The Loved Ones is great!

There's a lot of good Spanish horror too; Sleep Tight is a favourite of mine, and Piggy (which came out last year so should be around somewhere) as well as [rec] which has already been mentioned Smile

UmbilicusProfundus · 09/04/2023 00:04

Thank you all, I will brave Sinister then. Will take a day off work so I can watch in daylight when the kids are at school and close my eyes for the jump scares.

I really liked It Follows and I regularly enact the principle when slow-chasing my kids around the park. They find it terrifying I’m sure. Though I can see how it might unravel if a cinema audience starts to laugh rather than shriek.

Omg, are we the same person😅 It Follows was complete bullshit, my good God. Hand on heart I found it so awful yet so many people love it?!

I haven’t heard of Babadook but I certainly won’t be giving that a watch

@ReginaPerrin it was enjoyable! Well. Insofar as one can 'enjoy' a film like that. Thanks for the rec!

A limited series rather than a film but The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix.

This is an amazing series with several different threads running through it. One of the best things I've ever watched.

cornflakegeneration · 09/04/2023 01:01

The Orphanage (Spanish) - amazing film. Was recommended to me from a thread on here years ago.
