I enjoy anything supernatural (not really a fan of gore and blood etc). I like anything along the lines of,

The Conjuring
Incidious
Brahms

Wasn’t really a fan of,

Midsummer
Hereditary
The Witch

Hopefully you get the jist otherwise we’ll be here all day! Any suggestions welcome:)

Also, it’s not exactly in the same vein, but if you like suspense, I thoroughly recommend Signs. It is probably one of the best movies ever made and it is quite terrifying in parts. I personally think it is better than the 6th sense.

Shows how different people are - I think they're some of the crappiest movies around.

shadowchancesassy · 08/04/2023 22:11

@ghostyslovesheets I watched that a couple of weeks ago. Extremely gory and very graphic rape scenes. I'm not sure the op would be interested in that. It's classed as extreme horror. Not a bad film though Smile

Not sure how you feel about Korean Horror but The Sadness is possibly one of my favourite modern horror films - it's more an infection film and very gory but it blew me away

I enjoyed The Sadness too. Although it probably wouldn't be everybody's cup of tea (ditto Martyrs as somebody else recommended).

Audition would be a good all-round choice, I think 😊

When the Lights Went Out.

Is that the one set in Pontefract?

BeautifulWar · 08/04/2023 22:21

I second [rec], although prefer the original Spanish (subtitled) version over the American remake. Both versions are good, though!

There's one out last year, a Danish film, Speak No Evil. Really chilling and well-paced.

I have say, as a hardcore horror film maven for the past 40 years, I would NOT watch Sinister again and wish I never had. It's extremely disturbing.

Have you seen Black Phone? Same producers and Ethan Hawke. That was really stuck with me. Awful.

Florissant · 08/04/2023 22:37

The Others with Nicole Kidman is good.

Inthebathagain · 08/04/2023 22:39

Another vote for Get Out here.

Would love to hear your review of tonight's watch. Been a while since I saw a decent horror.

BlackBarbies · 08/04/2023 22:41

There’s some great (and not so great) suggestions but thank you for them all.

I absolutely LOVE Sinister, it’s such a great film. Ethan Hawke is amazing in that and the storyline is gripping. I’ve seen the original Ring and seen the original Rec. I personally wasn’t a fan of either but they just weren’t for me.

I wouldn’t consider The Platform to be a horror but I enjoyed the watch. A Quiet Place is the same, an enjoyable watch.

Currently half way through Us and I don’t think I’m a fan😅 not sure if I’m hard to impress but some of these mainstream films just don’t do it for me! I watched Drag Me to Hell the other day and that’s just a classic, absolutely loved it.

I’ve now added The Sadness, Martyrs and Hellhouse to my list as they look great. Thank you to those that suggested it!

And here I am watching Scream (2022) 🤣

NotAnotherBathBomb · 08/04/2023 22:42

The House on Pine Street (on Prime) isn't bad

BlackBarbies · 08/04/2023 22:47

I think Get Out and Us are the sort of films that people enjoy but I think are actually quite shite😂 it just doesn’t make sense to me so I find it hard to really get into it.

Case 39 is also one of my favourite horror films, so so good! I’ve added The Others to my list as that one looks great.

Keep them coming guys! Appreciate all of the recommendations:)

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

DrGregHouseFan · 08/04/2023 22:52

This is my kinda post. I love horror films!

Lights out
The Visit
28 days later
28 weeks later
Annabelle films
The sadness
Wolf creek
30 days of night
Truth or dare
Countdown
MA
Veronica
The autopsy of Jane Doe
The curse of La Llorona

They’re some of the ones I’ve watched that I recommend. Happy watching! 👻

midsomermurderess · 08/04/2023 22:59

Wolf Creek is on TV somewhere tonight. Bloody terrifying.

Isn’t it just! It’s one of those films that you just wouldn’t think of watching but then you do & realise how scary it is 😅

Marchintospring · 08/04/2023 23:02

I like psychological horror. I love the Ring but preferred the US remake as it was faster paced and made more sense.
Love The Others, Omen, Devils Advocate and Constantine. Also like Event Horizon which is only just on the right side of gory.
I liked Hellraiser and Amiteyville but they look seriously dated now.

shadowchancesassy · 08/04/2023 23:02

The descent is one of my favourites.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 08/04/2023 23:04

I'd strike Martyrs off your list if you like supernatural and don't like gore!

I can't imagine thinking Case 39 is brilliant and Get Out is shite.

SocksAndTheCity · 08/04/2023 23:04

I enjoyed Barbarian too, which I think is on Disney + now? It's good fun, but best to go in completely blind.

I was at the premiere of Sinister back in 2012 (I think) and I remember the director was a very nice young fella. I also remember the man sitting next to me jumped about three feet in the air every time something happened, which made me jump too - the whole place was at it 😂

Get Out is just okay. I’d give it a 5/10 rating because it just doesn’t make sense to me. It was more of a ‘wtf is this film about’ as opposed to an ‘omg what’s going to happen’ which is how I felt about Case 39.

It’s like X. That was such a hyped up film and when I watched it, I was like ‘great so the old people are killing them, so what.’ It just does nothing for me!

Yep I saw Barbarian recommended on Reddit and went into a blind. Didn’t trust the roommate guy at all until he got his bloody head smashed in🫣

😂😂 love that story of you watching Sinister in the cinemas. I’m such a scaredy-cat, I could never watch a film like that in the cinemas. I’d spend most of my time with my eyes closed
