I enjoy anything supernatural (not really a fan of gore and blood etc). I like anything along the lines of,

The Conjuring
Incidious
Brahms

Wasn’t really a fan of,

Midsummer
Hereditary
The Witch

Hopefully you get the jist otherwise we’ll be here all day! Any suggestions welcome:)

Shows how different people are - I think they're some of the crappiest movies around.

I suppose it really depends on what scares you. I also really like The VVitch, Midsommar and Hereditary, which OP says are the kinds of film she doesn’t like. I’m not hugely into supernatural, bump in the night type stuff, it doesn’t scare me as much, as it’s not real (the horror element from The VVitch is more about the collective hysteria leading people to turn against each other than the actual witch in the woods). Psychological horror usually effects me much more, because people do become “undone” in the real world. To be honest other than Signs I don’t really rate many other of M Nights films, including 6th sense. Joaquin Phoenix and Mel Gibson give stellar performances in Signs. I watched his second most recent one about people who age quickly on a beach and it was just dire.

BananasForBrains · 09/04/2023 07:44

It’s pretty fucking scary 😂😂

BananasForBrains · 09/04/2023 07:50

Have you watched the second and third series (different stories)? I thought The Haunting of Hill House was awesome!! The Haunting of Bly Manor (2nd series) was a bit dry, but the 3rd series, Midnight Mass was absolutely epic! Not watched the 4th yet.

BananasForBrains · 09/04/2023 07:51

Gah sorry. Not quoted properly on my last two replies to the people who’s comments I was trying to reply too. It’s too early 🤦‍♀️

reddwarfgeek · 09/04/2023 07:56

I prefer psychological/disturbing rather than horror and I've got to say Midsommar was one of the best films I've seen. It's very different.
Not in line with what you've already suggested but it was worth a mention. Stays with you.

NewDogOwner · 09/04/2023 08:04

The Taking of Deborah Logan is very good.

HoogahToogah · 09/04/2023 09:20

I would also recommend a British film called In Fear which is set in Ireland, it was released at a film festival around 10 years ago I think, I saw it on Film4 and it was brilliant, very creepy and suspenseful. Not supernatural but not gory.

ZombieKettle · 09/04/2023 10:03

I've seen It Follows a few times now and find it very scary. It's the thought of being followed by something you can't quite see that I found creepy. And not being able to escape. Whereas I thought Hereditary was dire and people were laughing at the cinema at the end (including myself).

lemons44 · 09/04/2023 10:16

The exorcism of Emily rose
Devils Due (although don't watch if you are pregnant!)
Before I wake
The invisible man (not very scary but does have suspense)

ZombieKettle · 09/04/2023 10:18

In Fear and Candyman are currently free to watch on All4.

lemons44 · 09/04/2023 10:20

I second the phone of the series 'the haunting of hill house' as well actually! And the follow up series 'the haunting of Bly manner' they were both brilliant.

I preferred the Bly manner one but both were really really good!

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/04/2023 10:20

The Others

ZombieKettle · 09/04/2023 10:22

I thought Don't Blink on Amazon Prime was surprisingly good. It's a low budget B movie and some of the acting is dodgy, but the premise is good and creepy and I was gripped till the end.

TheJudgeandJury · 09/04/2023 10:23

Black phone was really good. I think it's a bit of a slow burner but by the end you're like Shock

Smile
Malignant
The conjuring series there like 2 or 3 of them I think.
The Nun
The grudge has always really scared me and the only way I ever got over it was to tell myself I'll never go to Japan but I did and it was still in the back of my mind haha

ZombieKettle · 09/04/2023 10:27

The Awakening (2011 with Rebecca Hall) is a good ghost film.

Eranzer · 09/04/2023 10:31

I love my horrors and also am usually underwhelmed by most!
Some great suggestions here, particularly:
The Visit (it's a proper WTF ending)
Before I Wake (it's cleverly done)
The Invisible Man is a great shout
I'll add: The Night House. Not super scary but it's a pretty trippy horror that I enjoyed.

ZombieKettle · 09/04/2023 10:33

The classic Don't Look Now (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) is on BBC iPlayer.

Eranzer · 09/04/2023 11:47

Also don't know if anyone's mentioned Mirrors but you've probably already seen it. It gives me the willies

It’s pretty fucking scary 😂😂

Speaking of M Night, have you seen The Visit? I really enjoyed that, having had very low expectations. @BlackBarbies that might be another one for you to check out

Terrifying!

Hamster1111 · 09/04/2023 13:05

😂😂 love that story of you watching Sinister in the cinemas. I’m such a scaredy-cat, I could never watch a film like that in the cinemas. I’d spend most of my time with my eyes closed

You sound just like me @blackbarbies I love being scared but equally hide most of the time (often watching my DHs face for his reaction!) It's all a bit messed up as I'm scared but loving it at the same time. Probably some sort of psychological reason I'm sure

This is an amazing series with several different threads running through it. One of the best things I've ever watched.

Agreed, this was excellent. They made a second season with the same actors, different story line but I didn't like it as much.

Also, anyone else like American horror story? The hotel one with lady gaga is one of my favorite TV series ever I think. Really camp/OTT, great story, serial killers, love the way its shot and the music they use too.

Also, on the topic of scary, the Jeffrehy Dahmer dramatisation. Jesus fucking christ that was awful in an enjoyably disturbing way. Those poor men.

Sorry OP taking over with non film chat!! So many of my friends can't stand scary/true crime, it's nice to find a tribe who enjoy grim things!!

Pedrotok · 09/04/2023 13:18

It's a TV show but "From" had me turning the telly off at times 😂

There's a Korean film on netflix called phone that I loved. It's actually dubbed OK if you don't like subtitles.

I love Midsommar too, but I think it's a breakup film rather than a horror film. I would watch Florence Pugh in anything regardless, tbh Smile.

I'm enjoying hearing what people liked about films I didn't enjoy and vice versa; I found Signs so poor I walked out of the cinema, but I quite enjoyed the recent beach one (Old?) and I think that's because it made me think of an overlong Tales Of The Unexpected episode, which I always liked.

I'm sure we can mostly agree that The Happening was pure, unmitigated shite Grin.
