To wonder what part of this statement reminded Gary L of Nazi Germany?

This is Suella Braverman's statement Gary Lineker was reacting to when he said "This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s" ... twitter.com/GaryLineker/status/1633094764865126400

If she was saying she wanted to stop immigration I could understand GL's reaction. But she's not. I don't understand why anyone would not want to "stop the boats" when 1. they're lethal and 2. they're being run by criminal gangs. If GL had made it clear he wanted to stop the boats but thought this policy was the wrong way to do it, then fine. But he didn't - he just made an extremely inflammatory statement. He might be getting lots of love from some quarters, but personally I think he's an egotist who is playing into the hands of the people smugglers.

Do you have a transcript of the statement?

Do you have a transcript of the statement?

I posted the link to the video Gary Lineker was reacting to - I don't have a transcript of it.I know its a Twitter link, but you don't need an account to watch it and it's very short.

In case it helps, this is a transcript of her fuller statement to the House of Commons, which uses the same language: www.gov.uk/government/speeches/home-secretary-statement-on-the-illegal-immigration-bill

www.gov.uk/government/speeches/home-secretary-statement-on-the-illegal-immigration-bill

It is extremely othering, focuses on the aspects of immigration that can be meretriciously demonised, depicts the UK as being made a fool of/taken for a ride as a way of fomenting thoughtless adherence to what are actually extremely dangerous and inhumane policies.

marmaladeo · 11/03/2023 17:17

Yes, I saw that thread, but the OP didn't include a link to the video which doesn't help people who haven't seen it to make up their own mind.

Probably the bit where it was voiced by a minister from a political party that is fast becoming extremist far right.

It focuses on stopping the boats, not stopping immigration.

I lived in Australia when they introduced a similar policy. It was also controversial, but it stopped (most of) the boats.

Its exactly the style of othering, dehumanising language used by authoritarian regimes through history. 1930s Germany absolutely used this kind of language as it built up hate for an "othered" group as part of campaigning which led to the Nazi regime. Its a valid comparison.

HannibalHeyes · 11/03/2023 17:21

She's trying to other the refugees. This government have deliberately closed all legal routes for asylum seekers, so that they can declare them all "illegal".

If they wanted to stop the boats, they could do it very simply by cooperating with our neighbours (as we did when in the EU), and by creating legal and safe routes for those who are desperate to come here.

If you can't see that, you're too far up the government's fundament. And it doesn't show you up as a good person.

Janedoe82 · 11/03/2023 17:22

She isn’t stopping the boats because she is worried about people drowning!! Or criminal gangs!!
Don’t be so idiotic.

See, this is the sort of dumb response that makes me think the reaction is mostly just people who already hated the tories jumping in on an opportunity to misrepresent a controversial policy. How about a bit of objectivity?

Ah yes-that highly educated historian Gary 'crisps for brains' Linekar!

We must all take note of the daft twat.

Does it matter though. It is his (and by tweeting it clearly his) opinion about it. The question isn’t whether he is right (and that is very subjective) but whether in the role as match of the day presenter he is allowed to tweet it. Whether his role means that rather than having freedom of speech to give his opinions he shouldn’t be allowed.

personally nothing in the role of match of the day presenter to me overrides his right to free speech

BIWI · 11/03/2023 17:24

If you're going to slag him off, at least have the courtesy to spell his name correctly! It's Lineker.

And I suspect he's better educated than some of the posters on this thread.

Iam4eels · 11/03/2023 17:25

You don't need to do a deep-dive into 1930s Nazi propaganda to find similarities, a cursory Google will show you glaringly obvious ones.

Another recent piece of legislation with massive similarities was an amendment to the online safety bill stating that content showing people crossing the Channel in “a positive light” will be illegal and that tech platforms must proactively prevent such content from reaching users.

To draw even more comparisons, the Nazis literally had a plan to ship Jewish people to Africa and abandon them there. Sounds mighty familiar, doesn't it....?

The Holocaust didn't start with people being dragged away in the night and shipped off to their deaths. It's started with othering in the media, a "them Vs us" rhetoric, provocative language about "swarms" overrunning 'us', creating a common enemy/common struggle for people to unite against, controlling the media, controlling elections and the electorate, and so on. It was a steady drip of hate so that by the time it ramped up people would just accept it, they'd turn a blind eye, they'd even actively support it because they'd been conditioned into thinking it was the only way to deal with the problem.

InfluencerHag · 11/03/2023 17:25

I'm assuming from your comments OP that you are a conservative voter.

How do you personally feel about the stop the boats policy?

NotWaterproof · 11/03/2023 17:26

The long term issue, is that we are small countries in Europe compared to the USA, with limited infrastructure. We aren't self sufficient in food in the UK for those already here.

Ireland is much smaller, with a population not as large and their infrastructure can't cope either, the poor people there aren't happy with their situation, it's not a UK exclusive issue.

Countries like Africa are much bigger than depicted on maps. There will be lots more migration for various reasons in the future.

The poor in our country are basically funding rich people in poor countries as well as the state in our own country.

FixTheBone · 11/03/2023 17:26

Rub 4 brain cells together and spend 30 seconds thinking about the point he was trying to make...

..which is the tone being set is reminiscent of the political maneuverings that led to the establishment of a fascist leadership in Germany - remember the script that reads "it didn't start with gas chambers...." that was the point Lineaker was making - there are disturbing undertones in the way the press, post-truth and rhetoric are being aligned.

If it makes you feel any better, I think there are better comparisons than pre-war Germany - Germany was an ambitious European power that very nearly succeeded in conquering huge swathes of continental Europe.

I think the UK is heading to be more like North Korea - a nuclear state that has an overinflated impression of its own importance, relying on disinformation and suppressing the lower echelons of society so that a ruling elite can maintain its power, influence and money....

AmericasfavoritefightingFrenchman · 11/03/2023 17:26

In particular, it’s the way she talks about our systems being ‘overwhelmed’ and also the choice to put a monetary value on what these people are ‘costing us’.

Only someone who knows nothing of the horrors of Nazi Germany would post this.

Jews everywhere are sick to the very very back teeth of having one of the worst events in history being dragged out by unimaginative gobshites to compare a case that is nothing like Nazi Fucking Germany.

Stop.

Lots of Tory apologists spouting this nonsense. Trying to silence dissent.

What does that remind me of...

DumpedinKilburn · 11/03/2023 17:28

Bollocks!

Iam4eels · 11/03/2023 17:29

I'm of Jewish descent and I'm not sick of it being used as a comparison.

Maybe if the government don't want to be compared to one of the worst far right regimes in history then they should stop emulating the early days of said far right regime?
