How similar do you think the language of 1930s Germany is to the current Tory rhetoric on people crossing the Channel

cakeorwine · 10/03/2023 18:33

Using words like invasion,

Stigmatising people coming across the Channel

All the headlines in the news.

I think that we are moving towards language that does demonise people. No matter what you think, the language we use is important. And it's not just people who cross the Channel who face this behaviour

Der Volkswille = will of the people (used in right wing rhetoric, not just german, even Trump used it). Triumph of the Will = major film by Lotte Reifenstahl made during the Nazi period.
Volksverraeter = traitors of the people not a stones throw from Volksfeinde = enemies of the people.
The whole Volks terminology is a massive no-no, used widely in Nazi Germany....

Swarm/invasion
The whole rhetoric that refugees she 'taking things' from working class British families.

Any decent documentary about the Holicaust shows how this language was used in the early stages to demonise Jews and others and justify taking rights away from them.

I find the removal of access to the modern slavery protection particularly horrifying

There have been cases recently, near me, of trafficked women being raped 30 times a day in 'brothels'. The government is saying it wouldn't protect them, or recognise that they are victims of slavery.

Because of how they came into the country and where they are from.

There's no doubt about it for me. It's scary and it's fascism. Where does it end?

NiceHotCuppaCoffee · 10/03/2023 19:45

I have had to purchase visas whilst travelling to several countries.

Ukrainian menstayed and fought, the women applied for visas covering themselves and the children.

I don't like lots of undocumented fit young men arriving without a home and job to come to, it's not a race issue, many sho paid tax here for years are freezing and billionions are spent instead elsewhere.

In countries that aborted female foetuses sbd have too many men, there are significant issues with these single young men.

If that makes me far right (apparently I am also far right for knowing about safeguarding and biology too) it makes the left cruel to the vulnerable taxpayer who resides here and fhe left total male supremacists.

This just makes the left look even more of a male supremacy ideology, they like men having sexual rights they call those women sex workers.

They are pushing and helping undocumented young fit economic migrants, most are from safe EU countries like Albania, who are over representedin our prisons - on the population.

The left also demand mixes sex spaces, yet they call it single sex when they allow special men in, who can just magic the specialness whenever they like and only Gnostics on the left can determine and look onto souls to see who is genuine, the public aren't allowed to decide.

I don't want too many men here, thanks.

Completely agree. It's fucking outrageous.

No matter what people think - it's the language that is an issue.

It's well known how language can influence people and we can see the language used now.

And this is not being discussed. Until it's too late. And then people will be surprised how it happened

This thread is about the language being used

Invasion
Dehumanising
Othering

Not about the people crossing the Channel

VeniVidiWeeWee · 10/03/2023 20:19

And how they relate to Nazi ideology.

Closdifficile · 10/03/2023 20:26

Look it up. The terminology, the visual imagery all employed by the brexit camp.
Use of words designed to stoke resentment - 'enemy of the people' 'will of the people' and with 'folkish' undertones.

Closdifficile · 10/03/2023 20:28

Nazis used very similar if not identical phrases. But I don't think they are Nazis, they are simply using phrases to stir people up into patriotic fervour like with EU referendum.

Nope. I don't need to look it up.

You need to provide specific examples.

If you can I will listen to your argument.

1930s Germany

You do know how it started? Targeting and othering people. Making them being seen as a single group

Removing their human rights

My right hon. Friend is right to highlight the legal complexity of this issue. There will be measures relating to rule 39 orders, and I refer him to the disapplication of section 3 of the Human Rights Act. That sends a message to the judiciary about how Parliament intends the Bill, when it becomes an Act of Parliament, to be interpreted in the courts.

Read a history book fgs!!
The 1930s are worryingly similar to now
Recovering from a global pandemic, global economic recession, rise of facism, nationalism, isolationism...
Never ends well

XanaduKira · 10/03/2023 20:35

I do agree but I also agree with @NiceHotCuppaCoffee too. The whole thing is so worrying & I believe much more complex than Nazi Germany given the organised criminal gangs involved and the fact that those individuals were already in a safe country.

AbsoluteYawns · 10/03/2023 20:36

I have to point out that while what the tories are doing is deplorable to compare it with nazi attacks is misguided.

The Nazis othered their OWN citizens by dint of their race and religion.

The tories are othering refugees and people coming to this country

Both abhorrent but different. Don't fall into the trap of allowing Jews to be othered all over again as a side line or acceptable misunderstanding of this situation.

I would link to David Baddiels tweets on this recently. (Are we allowed to link?!)

XanaduKira · 10/03/2023 20:37

I agree @AbsoluteYawns and I'm sure it's fine to link.

pointythings · 10/03/2023 20:41

@NiceHotCuppaCoffee Albania is not in the EU, it is on the accession pathway.

It isn't just the language that is concerning here, it's policy. The graphic sets it out. It's chilling.

Closdifficile · 10/03/2023 20:51

Just maybe if the police force was properly funded, the criminal justice system was functioning then these gangs of Albanians or such like would be apprehended.
The tories have decimated public services. Youth Services, probation, social work. And people then wonder why the country is crumbling...

But...

The UK deserted Poland and Czechoslovakia in 1939. We now support Ukraine.
