To wonder what part of this statement reminded Gary L of Nazi Germany?

This is Suella Braverman's statement Gary Lineker was reacting to when he said "This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s" ... twitter.com/GaryLineker/status/1633094764865126400

If she was saying she wanted to stop immigration I could understand GL's reaction. But she's not. I don't understand why anyone would not want to "stop the boats" when 1. they're lethal and 2. they're being run by criminal gangs. If GL had made it clear he wanted to stop the boats but thought this policy was the wrong way to do it, then fine. But he didn't - he just made an extremely inflammatory statement. He might be getting lots of love from some quarters, but personally I think he's an egotist who is playing into the hands of the people smugglers.

Ah yes-that highly educated historian Gary 'crisps for brains' Linekar!

We must all take note of the daft twat.

When he played in Spain he learned Spanish and learned all he could about Spanish culture. When he played in Japan he embraced Japanese culture and learned Japanese. He was careful in his tweet to say S Braverman's language was reminiscent of the 1930s, not the 1940s which was much worse. He is entirely accurate in this. So by most people's standards 'daft twat' doesn't really make a lot of sense.

Bollocks!

You do talk a lot of that, yes!

SquirrelsStars · 11/03/2023 17:31

Lineker is entitled to his views but calling people Nazis (by implication) just because you disagree with them is pathetic and hugely offensive.

I suspect most people would have listened to the statement from Suella Braverman and thought it was reasonably balanced and fair - not on Mumsnet or in many other parts of the internet though - you aren't allowed to diverge from Linker-type views without being shouted down and called names, or demanding that people justify or explain themselves.

Oakorn · 11/03/2023 17:32

I cannot stand the faux-naive posts that come up time and time again. Stop pretending you have no alliance or agenda, it’s not working, no one is buying it. If you want to make a point then make it, if you want to ask a question then ask it. Why pretend it’s genuine curiosity when it’s actually just an attempt to push your perspective as fact? It’s goady and dull.

IHaveaSetOfVeryParticularSkills · 11/03/2023 17:32

Jews everywhere are sick to the very very back teeth of having one of the worst events in history being dragged out by unimaginative gobshites to compare a case that is nothing like Nazi Fucking Germany.

Erm. I believe quite some number if them do not agree with this and that includes a holocaust survivor

DumpedinKilburn · 11/03/2023 17:32

What a guy!

Daft Twat makes a lot of sense to most people and just because he may be able to order sushi in Japan or olives in Spain does not make him a thinking person because he is not.

He is a Daft Twat and what's worse-a Daft Twat who doesn't know he is a Daft Twat. I suppose while other Daft Twats egg him on, he will never know.

Iam4eels · 11/03/2023 17:33

The government could solve the issue of boat crossings by changing the rules on how to claim asylum. At present you need to be in the UK to do so. They could very easily make it so that asylum can be claimed by attending any British Embassy/consulate who will then start the process and either grant it, in which case the person can go to the UK, or not granting it in which case they can try elsewhere, remain in whichever country they're in, or return to their country of origin. Closing down safe, legal routes pushes desperate people into the arms of the traffickers - do you think people with other options willingly get in those boats?

shattered25 · 11/03/2023 17:33

I presumed it was how our government has demonised them and created some big divisive punitive actions. Coupled with all these new infringements of human rights and extremist views. It does feel a bit like humans are being pitted against each other and divided into factions of who deserves what.

It's just tip of the iceberg I gathered, too much going wrong in every avenue and all the stress caused for everyone creates fear and hostility. So their statement basically exacerbated everyone's tension. Felt like egging each other on to fight. Which I think is how hitler got into power in the first place... think Germany was in dire circumstances and the people became desperate :(

TheSnugglyDuckling · 11/03/2023 17:33

Jews weren’t immigrants in Nazi Germany they were bloody citizens and it is unbelievably racist and othering - towards Jews - to suggest there are any similarities between people coming over illegally for economic reasons and Jewish citizens of Europe who were murdered simply for being Jews.

marmaladeo · 11/03/2023 17:36

To draw even more comparisons, the Nazis literally had a plan to ship Jewish people to Africa and abandon them there. Sounds mighty familiar, doesn't it....?

No, not the same at all because they lived in Germany - they weren't being trafficked there on small boats by people smugglers.

The point of the policy is to stop people travelling via that route. You can try and spin it into something that is generically anti-immigration but anyone objective can see that it isn't.

How do you come over legally and claim asylum?

The German citizens in WW2 had their own housing and income.

Exactly. Lineker clearly has not one teeny little clue as to what he's talking about.

His tweets are so offensive he should delete, apologise and get back to his day job if he still has one.

marmaladeo · 11/03/2023 17:19

It focuses on stopping the boats, not stopping immigration.

I lived in Australia when they introduced a similar policy. It was also controversial, but it stopped (most of) the boats.

OP I was also living in Australia when they introduced this. It was fucking awful. Do you not recall young children being held, effectively, in prison type conditions. Asylum seekers protesting by sewing their lips together?

but it’s alright eh? It stopped the boats. Job’s a good ‘un?

Jesus wept. Why are there so many goady posters on here today

Rhondaa · 11/03/2023 17:40

Stopping the small boats is what most intelligent and compassionate people want.

GuyFawkesDay · 11/03/2023 17:40

NotWaterproof · 11/03/2023 17:26

The long term issue, is that we are small countries in Europe compared to the USA, with limited infrastructure. We aren't self sufficient in food in the UK for those already here.

Ireland is much smaller, with a population not as large and their infrastructure can't cope either, the poor people there aren't happy with their situation, it's not a UK exclusive issue.

Countries like Africa are much bigger than depicted on maps. There will be lots more migration for various reasons in the future.

The poor in our country are basically funding rich people in poor countries as well as the state in our own country.

Countries like Africa 🤦‍♀️🙄

AmericasfavoritefightingFrenchman · 11/03/2023 17:41

@TheSnugglyDuckling the comparison he’s making isn’t between Jews of German nationality and immigrants trying to cross the Chanel. The comparison is of the language used by two different governments to describe a group of people that were unwelcome to those governments.

Yes, by reinstating safe routes for asylum seekers to use.

It's really not rocket surgery, but you government shills keep repeating this nonsense...

IHaveaSetOfVeryParticularSkills · 11/03/2023 17:42

People are not saying the Jewish were like the asylum seekers.
They are saying the language is similar, not the people.

This will also give another green light yo racist morons to abuse anyone and everyone who is different. Like referendum did in some way

C8H10N4O2 · 11/03/2023 17:19

Its exactly the style of othering, dehumanising language used by authoritarian regimes through history. 1930s Germany absolutely used this kind of language as it built up hate for an "othered" group as part of campaigning which led to the Nazi regime. Its a valid comparison.

The differnce is that she and this government is allowing, if not encouraging mainly non-white legal immigration. I very much doubt that Hitler would have welcomed non-white, non-blond, non-christian people to Germany in the 1930s.

They are trying to deter illegal immigration.

I imagine the same parts of the statement and the government's behaviour that makes many other people think the same thing.

In case anyone missed it.

Use a sense of analogy.

He's not saying jews were immigrants. He's saying that language used to 'other' a group, any group, leads to dangerous consequences later on when people are then ready to accept hatred or prejudice towards that group.

And no, I don't think most people listened to Braverman's speech and agreed. I think most people with a bit of critical thinking understood what Lineker was saying.

We could have the infrastructure to support people if we wanted. Why not open safe, legal routes, and process the immigrants faster? We desperately need workers in so many fields, and people are constantly complaining about not having enough staff for things.
