To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

And now Alex Scott! Good on them...following it on Twitter, joe Lycett has just come up trumps

Bekindbekind · 10/03/2023 19:47

I agree with you. I have been surprised at the reaction he’s received. Everyone talks a good game about how they would have stood up for the Jews blah blah if they’d been around back then. Of course it’s all bullshit. I admire Lineker for standing by his words.

Densol57 · 10/03/2023 19:49

I think its wonderful so many mumsnetters are welcoming these poor people to live in their homes and support them like thats bloke who played football once and sells crisps

LittleMG · 10/03/2023 19:49

Dreadful language definitely needs calling out 👏 need more people to do this.

AdamRyan · 10/03/2023 19:50

All of them are heroes.
I sincerely hope the BBC can't find presenters for tomorrow's show

Hugh Bonneville with a classic! (I miss WA1)
@Jason__Watkins
Right no yes it’s all perfectly under control: Alan Sugar’s going to present
#MOTD
and if Ian Wright does end up playing truant, Richard Sharp says Boris Johnson will stand in for £800,000. So that’s all good. #W1A

RedDirtWildChild · 10/03/2023 19:55

Not often a Lineker fan but I’m in full support of him and others on this.

VeryLowTum · 10/03/2023 19:55

I bet Tim Lovejoy will be only too happy to step in.

etsiketsi · 10/03/2023 19:57

I think the Director General has played a blinder. There was enormous pressure on him having “warned” Gary before.

There was also little understanding by the public - completely played upon by politicians - around the difference between impartiality clauses for talent and newsreaders. This was compounded by ignorance over the difference between concerning politics and opinion in 1930s Germany and the later Holocaust.

Too many people missed the point and now I hope they start to understand it.

We can’t celebrate and encourage “talent” to speak out on the Qatar World Cup and issues in that country but not accept them commenting on home issues.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/03/2023 20:09

It’s brilliant

Graces7 · 10/03/2023 20:11

Because what we all need right now is a grossly overpaid, overexposed sports presenter with a sketchy grasp of history to virtue signal his unsolicited, personal, political opinion & bias.

Periornot · 10/03/2023 20:12

I haven't seen a single person who is against what he said actually address the point he made about language. I'm sure they can't all truly misunderstand. He said their language was not dissimilar to 1930s Germany. It isn't - there are clear similarities.

cakeorwine · 10/03/2023 20:13

Absolutely agree.
And it was not "Comparing them to the Nazis" as the Daily Mail suggests

It's the language. And we know how it started. A Holocaust survivor called out Suella Braverman a few months ago.

I hope that decent Conservatives can see what has happened to the Conservative party. I was talking about John Major this evening. What has happened to the Conservative party?

We really do actually, hence why he has so much support.

Britain is my home, and I’m welcoming them here to be supported by the tax that I pay until they contribute themselves to the public purse and economy (which has been proven is the result of accepting refugees).

unlike the boss of the BBC who donated 400k to the tory party and arranged a loan for Johnson? or Fiona Bruce (?) excusing Stanley Johnson's DV?

Looks like you're the one who doesn't understand what's going on. He has as much right as anyone else to point out what's going on

Do you think the language used by government is or is not dissimilar to the language of 1930s Germany?

I totally agree

Paesano · 10/03/2023 20:20

It's madness that anyone could be upset about what Gary lineker tweeted but not be bothered by Richard Sharp's relationship with Boris Johnson. Delighted that other MOTD presenters are showing solidarity.

When people resort to this sort of bizarre point scoring, you can tell they don't have a decent argument.

Motheranddaughter · 10/03/2023 20:23

For me it’s a free speech issue
GL is entitled to his opinion

Can’t imagine any former pro player agreeing to appear on MOTD tomorrow
after

OneTC · 10/03/2023 20:23

She is spectacularly missing the point.

She understands full well the point, she's just being a weasel by redirecting it
