To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

Things like this don't and shouldn't require individual actions. That would be too inefficient. That's why we have a government so that they can take collective and effective action on our behalf. It's what our tax money pays for. That's how our society works. If you don't understand that then please refrain from debating with adults.

I actually wish we had a separate private sponsorship scheme like the Canadians. Groups can get together, raise money and bring over a (UN vetted) refugee family. The refugee is housed, fed and supported by the collective for at least two years.

This is in addition to the government schemes.

It shows support, signals people's willingness and supports families with integration. www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/refugees/help-outside-canada/private-sponsorship-program.html

As well as, rather than instead of but it's a great idea.

Bagzzz · 10/03/2023 20:36

I happen to agree with GL and also think he has the right to free speech.
Arguably news readers and journalists for BBC should be impartial in and out of the workplace as it is public broadcaster.

Otherwise parents should be teaching their children how to understand that just because a sports presenter who works for BBC uses a personal twitter account doesn’t mean that they are representing the BBC. Also that if a personality they admire tweets something they find interesting go and look at sources and make up their minds.

(in theory schools have a role but not load another thing on the curriculum or maybe it comes when looking at news in English lessons)

Sorry to derail. Has Stanley Johnson been accused of domestic violence?

Yes

I think its wonderful so many mumsnetters are welcoming these poor people to live in their homes and support them like thats bloke who played football once and sells crisps

Oh don't be silly. You really think it's humane to ship people off to Rwanda which leaves a lot to desired on the human rights front without anyone being critical.

Thank god someone has a moral compass.

There are many charities looking for host families to take in refugees

It is really worrying that people are on here defending this government. What else do they have to do? Is the othering 'them and us' rhetoric and the removal of our human rights not enough to make you worry?

monsteramunch · 10/03/2023 20:40

@chevvyroo

Stanley Johnson broke his ex wife's nose.

This article summarises some of his behaviour: amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/nov/28/and-still-television-companies-beat-a-path-to-wife-beater-stanley-johnsons-front-door-why

Well before the MP Caroline Nokes described how he smacked her “hard” on the bottom, the New Statesman journalist Ailbhe Rea said she’d also experienced unwanted touching, while his supporter Isabel Oakeshott confirmed, perhaps carelessly, Johnson’s reputation as “handsy”, he was known to have put his first wife, the late artist Charlotte Wahl, in hospital.

That her nose was broken by Johnson was not denied, when the incident was revealed in Tom Bower’s 2020 biography of the prime minister. Rather, friends explained, it was a regrettable “one-off” that occurred when his physically weaker victim “flailed” at him.

Shortly after it was published, the Conservative Environmental Network announced the arrival of Johnson as its “international ambassador”, which he remains. Plausible groping accusations seem likely, along with Johnson’s disrespect for their authors, likewise to be classed as environmentally sustainable. Perhaps because initial newspaper serialisation did not reflect the extent of the violence detailed in Bower’s book, the nose-breaking, explained away, was insufficient to pause Johnson’s career.

But his ex-wife had described mistreatment that began early in their marriage. “He resented that I cared about my friends,” she said, echoing many fellow survivors’ accounts, “and that’s when he first hit me”. Later, she said, doctors and her parents were made aware and spoke to Johnson about his abuse, which was known to their children. “He had hit me. He hit me many times, over many years.” She told Bower she wanted “the truth told”.

Agree with every word @Nimbostratus100

The Tory’s are deliberately using this language so they create a big fat dead cat, which they hope will distract form the fact they are a failing, lying, corrupt bunch of CUNTS. And it’s worked so far until Gary decided he wouldn’t play ball.

goodsea · 10/03/2023 20:43

Periornot · 10/03/2023 20:12

I haven't seen a single person who is against what he said actually address the point he made about language. I'm sure they can't all truly misunderstand. He said their language was not dissimilar to 1930s Germany. It isn't - there are clear similarities.

"He said their language was not dissimilar to 1930s Germany. It isn't - there are clear similarities."

That's what 'not dissimilar' means.

Because what we all need right now is a grossly overpaid, overexposed sports presenter with a sketchy grasp of history to virtue signal his unsolicited, personal, political opinion & bias.

^This. If you're pinning your hopes for a cultural revolution on a retired footballer, you're going to be very disappointed.

Mouldyfoodhelp · 10/03/2023 20:44

It isn't necessarily about whether he's wrong or right for me, its more his right to say it when he's not actively against ( to my knowledge) a singular person.

People should be able to question government in whats essentially a harmless without risk to their jobs.

I 100 percent disagree. Dim Gary makes too many public political statements working for a company gaining funding through government.

Do you feel the same about Alan Sugar?

"There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries. "This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the '30s."

I have never voted Tory and I hate this corrupt shit show of a government. But I am not pinning any hopes on a millionaire football pundit.

I 100% agree with this. Do any of you agreeing with Lineker actually know what went on in Nazi Germany in the 1930’s and how many brave men gave their lives in WW11 to preserve our way of life and defeat Hitler ? If so, you should be ashamed of yourselves for even associating yourselves with what Lineker said. He’s a sports commentator, not a politician and he’s paid so much and is so out of touch with how originally people live, I’m surprised he hasn’t been jumped on by MN, who are normally intolerant of this type of hypocrisy. Shame on you.

"There is no huge influx" That's an opinion. 30K arrivals by boat might be described that way in some opinions, or not in his.

DarkDarkNight · 10/03/2023 20:48

You have to remember that there are a group of people out there who really think that the UK takes far more refugees than would be an equitable share. Recently they have tried to argue that Norway should take more refugees because the population density is so low.

Yes he works for the BBC, but he is not the BBC.

Exactly.

And fuck now. The BBC are not exactly a paragon of morality and impartiality. I can't even believe it stills exists in the wake of what we know about the BBC and Jimmy Saville and god knows what else.

Gary Lineker should be able to speak out as he sees fit. He's not a journalist. He's a tv presenter.

The reason this has gone so mental is because the truth fucking hurts and he touched a nerve. This government is garbage.

I remain hopeful.

www.markpack.org.uk/155623/voting-intention-opinion-poll-scorecard/

Which is perhaps why we have had a sudden bout of trying to create a storm of hatred from the government this week, supported by the far right newspapers in this country.

Oh absolutely. The Tories are reaching desperation stage, hence the ID card bollocks and now all the culture war/populist rubbish. They've failed to do what they were elected to do, they are a total shambles and whatever the opposition are like, I'd be willing to give them a chance all day long.
