To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

1000 replies

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

Short memories.

I think its wonderful so many mumsnetters are welcoming these poor people to live in their homes and support them like thats bloke who played football once and sells crisps

I don't know if this is ironic, but, if not, please say how many mumsnetters have "these poor people" in their homes.

Because what we all need right now is a grossly overpaid, overexposed sports presenter with a sketchy grasp of history to virtue signal his unsolicited, personal, political opinion & bias.

unlike the boss of the BBC who donated 400k to the tory party and arranged a loan for Johnson? or Fiona Bruce (?) excusing Stanley Johnson's DV?

Looks like you're the one who doesn't understand what's going on. He has as much right as anyone else to point out what's going on

Sorry to derail. Has Stanley Johnson been accused of domestic violence?

I’m always mindful of this Michael Rosen quote:

”I sometimes fear that
people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress
worn by grotesques and monsters
as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis.
Fascism arrives as your friend.
It will restore your honour,
make you feel proud,
protect your house,
give you a job,
clean up the neighbourhood,
remind you of how great you once were,
clear out the venal and the corrupt,
remove anything you feel is unlike you…

It doesn’t walk in saying,
“Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution.”

The Tories are a danger to free speech. Their concern for impartiality extends no further than how it affects their own interests.

Endlesssummer2022 · 10/03/2023 20:26

Some people will focus on the fact they are millionaires to try and dismiss them but they are right and will be on the right side of history.

carriedout · 10/03/2023 20:27

I thought the Tories were in favour of free speech? Oh no, my mistake.

Lineker is entitled to say what he thinks.

This Tory government can just fuck off, they are pissing about worrying about what a sports presenter says rather than doing the hard work of fixing the NHS, the energy crisis, the economy or even the bloody border because we all know this latest policy won't work, it is just designed to appease the Daily Mail readers.

Isitsixoclockalready · 10/03/2023 20:27

Totally this and I hope that people remember what an absolute shambles they have been when it comes to election day. They are at total bottom of the barrel scraping time now. Lowest common denominator politics.

Not 'accused' but the accepted account has been re-discussed - his ex-wife detailed what happened in a book (apparently Stanley Johnson broke her nose) which was corroborated by friends.

Countries don't go from lovely and free to fascists and genocide in a single move. First they go through a stage like this. And if we're quiet and let them do this, how quiet will we be when the alternative is worse? Make no mistake, if you don't condemn rhetoric, you would have been one of the people staying silent when the Nazis were around.

Good for Gary.

Which is perhaps why we have had a sudden bout of trying to create a storm of hatred from the government this week, supported by the far right newspapers in this country.

That's a completely nonsensical argument but people love dishing it out. It really annoys the hell out of me.

Things like this don't and shouldn't require individual actions. That would be too inefficient. That's why we have a government so that they can take collective and effective action on our behalf. It's what our tax money pays for. That's how our society works. If you don't understand that then please refrain from debating with adults.

I am grateful to the people taking a stand. I agree with you OP.

Yeah, it’s almost as if intelligent people with critical thinking skills can agree with one behaviour and disagree with a different behaviour even when exhibited by the same person. Like how if I drink drive and then run a marathon for charity - people could praise and support the charity marathon whilst criticising and condemning the drunk driving. It’s not rocket science and is how people with moderate opinions tend to live their lives.

Actually it’s not entirely irrelevant, OP…it bolsters your point. The BBC were happy enough for Lineker and his fellow presenters to comment on the Qatari government’s human rights record / position on LGB rights, but he’s not allowed to address his own government’s language about refugees? Double standards much

Ah, but they wrote a cast iron "gotcha". You're supposed to roll over and admit your hypocrisy. Then they are spared the effort of fearing they might be wrong. Can't have that, don't you know.
