To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

I never thought I’d be cheering Alan Shearer!

Rosscameasdoody · 10/03/2023 20:50

So1invictus · 10/03/2023 20:45

Point out one part of what he said that was opinion and not fact.

"There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries. "This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the '30s."

We take in fewer refugees because we’re far smaller than most European countries. How far do you want to go in giving away our heritage ?

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/03/2023 20:50

Do any of you agreeing with Lineker actually know what went on in Nazi Germany in the 1930’s and how many brave men gave their lives in WW11 to preserve our way of life and defeat Hitler ?

And do you know the dates of WWII? Because he's talking about the pre-war era and the rhetoric. He's not saying the Tories ARE Nazis, just pointing out that they sound like Nazis, which they do.

History can go either way. People speaking out makes it more likely to go the right way.

jgw1 · 10/03/2023 20:51

Isitsixoclockalready · 10/03/2023 20:49

Oh absolutely. The Tories are reaching desperation stage, hence the ID card bollocks and now all the culture war/populist rubbish. They've failed to do what they were elected to do, they are a total shambles and whatever the opposition are like, I'd be willing to give them a chance all day long.

I am not sure the Tories even remember what they promised us all in their manifesto, certainly they gave up pretending they were going to implement it a long time ago.

Ifailed · 10/03/2023 20:51

So the Hard Right press have got their wishes.

Lets not look into the likes of the DM support of 1930's Germany, eh?

ScribblingPixie · 10/03/2023 20:51

Re the Quatar coverage, Gary Lineker read out a speech on the first programme that said the spotlight was on women's freedoms... and then, unless I missed it, they weren't mentioned again. It was just lip service from the BBC and its presenters.

Oblomov23 · 10/03/2023 20:51

I dint have a problem with his comments, or anyone voicing an opinion.

CornishGem1975 · 10/03/2023 20:51

And the award for spectacularly missing the point goes to...@Rosscameasdoody

He never compared the Government to Nazi Germany.

Please please explain how giving shelter to refugees equals giving away our heritage. Last time I checked we had a proud history of offering shelter to those who need it, to act in the opposite way as you and the likes of Braverman want would be a betrayal of our heritage.

LakieLady · 10/03/2023 20:52

Periornot · 10/03/2023 20:15

Do you think the language used by government is or is not dissimilar to the language of 1930s Germany?

It's how it starts: seeing a particular group as less worthy of the protections that those not in that group enjoy.

The "othering" of migrants has been disgraceful, as has the repeated gaslighting about the legality of people arriving in another country without paperwork, permission etc to claim asylum.

It's legal, not just because of the ECHR but also because of the UN Geneva Convention on refugees, but the government stooges keep referring to it as "illegal".

I swear my blood pressure goes up a notch every time I hear it.

Dottymug · 10/03/2023 20:52

@Rosscameasdoody except a Holocaust survivor accused Suella Braverman of using language reminiscent of 30s Germany very recently.

We are also far smaller in area than Antartica. Will you join me in campaigning for Anartica to take its far share of displaced people. According to the Home Secretary there are 100million displaced people in the world, which by my rough calculations means that Antartica should take 12million. They took none last year. Shocking.

ghostyslovesheets · 10/03/2023 20:52

It doesn't matter if he's a millionaire footballer - he's still entitled to his opinion and he has the right to say he find the rhetoric and language around immigration is vile and very similar to language used in 1930's Germany

Alan Sugar is still on TV - despite tweeting his total support for the Tory Party

Also Attenborough has been shelved and moved to I Player in case he upset people for talking about the realities of climate change!

One of the many things the German Gov did in the 30's btw was ban criticism from it's national broadcaster!

Dimondsareforever · 10/03/2023 20:52

Nothing wrong with having your own point of view … but when you work for the BBC you need to be impartial to politics. He wasn’t so needs to leave.
if you want to speak your mind .. leave and stop taking tax payers money …

SerendipityJane · 10/03/2023 20:53

Perhaps we need more living space ? I wonder how easy it would be to get this government to punt that idea ?

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 10/03/2023 20:53

Rosscameasdoody · 10/03/2023 20:47

I 100% agree with this. Do any of you agreeing with Lineker actually know what went on in Nazi Germany in the 1930’s and how many brave men gave their lives in WW11 to preserve our way of life and defeat Hitler ? If so, you should be ashamed of yourselves for even associating yourselves with what Lineker said. He’s a sports commentator, not a politician and he’s paid so much and is so out of touch with how originally people live, I’m surprised he hasn’t been jumped on by MN, who are normally intolerant of this type of hypocrisy. Shame on you.

Yes we do and that's why we support Linekar, because we can see the dangers of the route this government is taking with their "us v them" rhetoric.

Why should we be ashamed of wanting to prevent anything remotely similar from ever being a risk again?

ghostyslovesheets · 10/03/2023 20:54

He's not a news caster or a political pundit - so he's not infringing on his professional role in anyway

Dymaxion · 10/03/2023 20:54

I can't help feeling that the Government are actually delighted about all this.

It does rather detract from the HS2 debacle, it is going to be delayed by another two years at an absolutely exorbinate cost to the taxpayer for what is a remarkably miniscule amount of 'levelling upness' .

Then there is the fact that we are giving France another 500 million to try and 'stop the boats' by building a special detention centre that won't actually be ready until the end of 2026, amongst other things.

If I were Labour I would be drafting Jeremy Corbyn into pole position again, they are going to be inheriting an absolute shit tip, if they win the next election !

DarkDarkNight · 10/03/2023 20:54

Not a football fan but it is brilliant of Alan Shearer and Ian Wright to opt out of MOTD in solidarity. This is bully boy tactics from the BBC on behalf of their Tory friends.

Piggywaspushed · 10/03/2023 20:54

Honestly... I think Tory MPs are always pissed off when someone really wealthy and who seems like he should be a 'natural boy done good Tory' appears and vehemently disagrees with them. See also Gary Neville. Marcus Rashford.

The BBC are the least impartial group out there. It's a joke.

Isitsixoclockalready · 10/03/2023 20:55

I think that even if you don't agree with Lineker, that is kind of missing the point. The Tories are claiming that they support impartiality but there is no consistency. Plenty of people associated with the BBC have been allowed to air their right wing views without censorship.

ghostyslovesheets · 10/03/2023 20:55

@Rosscameasdoody so are only politicians allowed to have views on politics? Well that's me told

Greengagesnfennel · 10/03/2023 20:55

How are the bbc impartial if they have a blanket ban on people criticising the government. Even freelancers. It's really shocking. Do the government control the bbc narrative now?

meercat23 · 10/03/2023 20:55

etsiketsi · 10/03/2023 19:57

I think the Director General has played a blinder. There was enormous pressure on him having “warned” Gary before.

There was also little understanding by the public - completely played upon by politicians - around the difference between impartiality clauses for talent and newsreaders. This was compounded by ignorance over the difference between concerning politics and opinion in 1930s Germany and the later Holocaust.

Too many people missed the point and now I hope they start to understand it.

We can’t celebrate and encourage “talent” to speak out on the Qatar World Cup and issues in that country but not accept them commenting on home issues.

Yes to this. Just because you work for the BBC can't mean you can't express a view on political issues. I accept there may have to be different standards for those working in news or current affairs but he is a sports presenter and his comment was not made through BBC channels.
