To applaud Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, and think Suella Braverman is looking like a fool for not even understanding the comment

1000 replies

Nimbostratus100 · 10/03/2023 19:44

Lineker called the immigration policy cruel, and compared the language and attitude of the government to 1930s Germany.

I hundred percent agree with him

Braverman started denying that anything that is happening in UK is comparable to the holocaust

She is spectacularly missing the point. The holocaust didn't happen in the 1930s

What happened in the 1930s was the slow and steady build up of racism and aggression and hate, that resulted in the holocaust in the 1940s

And the noises coming out of the government are very much like 1930s nazis

For those of you that don't have any interest in Match of the Day, Gary Lineker, the main presenter, has been suspended, in spite of being a sports commentator, and NOT a news reader or involved in current affairs programming, and NOT bound by the impartiality clause, and his two top fellow presenters have refused to appear without him

So either the BBC bosses (tory appointees) have scored a spectacular own goal,(unintended pun) in trying to supress Lineker's opinions, and turning them into world wide headlines,

OR!

Maybe they are secretly working against the government by choosing a course of action that will actually make the tories look like complete fools, while pretending to support them!

Not a football fan but it is brilliant of Alan Shearer and Ian Wright to opt out of MOTD in solidarity. This is bully boy tactics from the BBC on behalf of their Tory friends.

Exactly that. Impartiality my ass. They are an old boys network.

saraclara · 10/03/2023 20:57

Newsreaders who are employees of the BBC, and their like, need to be impartial in their private life. Freelancing sports commentators, not so much.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/03/2023 20:58

How far do you want to go in giving away our heritage ?

'Our' heritage IS immigration. By my reckoning:

Beaker people, Romans, Irish, Anglo-saxons, Vikings, Normans, Flemish, Romani, Huguenots, Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi, African and Caribbean, Jews (German, Russian and others), Polish (go my team), and I'm missing lots. Including interesting ones like Berber (Scottish people have some of this).

We are a beautiful mixture and always have been.

User174387612 · 10/03/2023 20:58

So many MOTD fans on here

User98866 · 10/03/2023 20:58

What he’s said isn’t even an opinion. It’s indisputable fact. The language they have used is similar. Anyone with a smidge of a brain knows why they’re doing it. He’s not accusing the government of doing a genocide. It’s actually very very scary they way the government is trying to silence him and that the BBC has basically become a mouthpiece for the government.

Because what we all need right now is a grossly overpaid, overexposed sports presenter with a sketchy grasp of history to virtue signal his unsolicited, personal, political opinion & bias.

Brilliant!

Do any of you agreeing with Lineker actually know what went on in Nazi Germany in the 1930’s and how many brave men gave their lives in WW11 to preserve our way of life and defeat Hitler ?

And do you know the dates of WWII? Because he's talking about the pre-war era and the rhetoric. He's not saying the Tories ARE Nazis, just pointing out that they sound like Nazis, which they do.

History can go either way. People speaking out makes it more likely to go the right way.

I do.

And you're talking complete bollocks.

Please give an example of Tory rhetoric equalling Nazi rhetoric.

MarshaMelrose · 10/03/2023 20:58

It's not about agreeing or disagreeing with what Lineker says. It's whether someone employed by the BBC can make political comments. I guess if it's in his contract, then he can't. But if its not in his contract, and he has said in the past that he's allowed to say whatever he likes, then he can.

Personally, I find it hard to understand why he's the highest paid person on the BBC! I'd get rid of him just for that. Plus this would be a good time to clear out this older generation and get younger, and cheaper!, people on. I never understand why the broadcasters just keep using the same people over and over.

We take in fewer refugees because we’re far smaller than most European countries. How far do you want to go in giving away our heritage ?

Perhaps we need more living space ? I wonder how easy it would be to get this government to punt that idea ?

Under-rated post. Brava.

I didn't say equaling.

Rosscameasdoody · 10/03/2023 20:59

dollymixtured · 10/03/2023 20:52

Please please explain how giving shelter to refugees equals giving away our heritage. Last time I checked we had a proud history of offering shelter to those who need it, to act in the opposite way as you and the likes of Braverman want would be a betrayal of our heritage.

I have absolutely no problem with giving shelter to those in real danger and in need of asylum. What I DO have a problem with is economic migrants coming over in boats via people smugglers who seem to get off Scot free with profiting from other peoples’ misery. And, living in an area of high migration I see the crime rates going up and the way women are threatened on the streets on a day to day basis. No one wants to address that however, so I guess I’ll just admit defeat and get off the thread.

YRGAM · 10/03/2023 21:00

Presumably all of you who are angry about Lineker not being 'impartial' were just as annoyed with Alan Sugar

Aurorabored · 10/03/2023 21:00

Actually, the language and attitude of this government is very much like that of the U.K. in the 1930s.

’Before the German annexation of Austria (Anschluss) in 1938, border control officials determined whether political refugees or those escaping ethnic persecution could enter Britain. Refugees had to meet various criteria or be privately sponsored or self-supporting. Eligibility was not based upon the refugee’s experience of persecution, and the British Government provided no funding for refugees. It was easier to obtain entry to Britain if one were wealthy or had what was deemed a ‘useful’ profession. Some were only allowed in on the understanding that they would settle elsewhere permanently. Others came on the Kindertransport scheme or as domestic servants.’

What a horrifically pompous comment.

Firstly, in a democracy everyone has a right to an opinion; and that be whether you are politician, footballer or you wash dishes for a living.

And secondly both the Jewish Council and Holocaust survivors have condemned Braverman saying pretty much the same as Lineker, that's her comments echo the language of 1930's Germany.

Maybe it's you with the sketchy grasp of history.

I can't help feeling that the Government are actually delighted about all this.

It does rather detract from the HS2 debacle, it is going to be delayed by another two years at an absolutely exorbinate cost to the taxpayer for what is a remarkably miniscule amount of 'levelling upness' .

Then there is the fact that we are giving France another 500 million to try and 'stop the boats' by building a special detention centre that won't actually be ready until the end of 2026, amongst other things.

If I were Labour I would be drafting Jeremy Corbyn into pole position again, they are going to be inheriting an absolute shit tip, if they win the next election !

Yes, it is a bit of a distraction isn't it, everyone getting up in arms about, trending on Twitter. I imagine the government are delighted

Britain is my home, and I’m welcoming them here to be supported by the tax that I pay until they contribute themselves to the public purse and economy (which has been proven is the result of accepting refugees).

Excellent response 👏

It was obvious during the pandemic that the BBC was just the Government's mouthpiece. Impartial, unbiased...we're meant to trust them. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them! We talk about other countries being led by their media because they are fed a very controlled rhetoric. We're not far off the same in the UK but we're blind to it.

What?! It's not a mouthpiece. 😂 If it was a mouthpiece, they'd never report anything critical about the govt. There's a difference between state controlled TV and without political bias.

TooOldToBeDitzy · 10/03/2023 20:32

That's a completely nonsensical argument but people love dishing it out. It really annoys the hell out of me.

Things like this don't and shouldn't require individual actions. That would be too inefficient. That's why we have a government so that they can take collective and effective action on our behalf. It's what our tax money pays for. That's how our society works. If you don't understand that then please refrain from debating with adults.

I am grateful to the people taking a stand. I agree with you OP.

So I am sure you would agree that Gary Lineker should be paying all of his due tax to fund this then?
Unfortunately he’s just another hypocrite trying to weasel his way out of paying money owed.

Imagine a world where we're not allowed a personal opinion because @Graces7 doesn't think we deserve it.
