This is abuse. What kind of parent takes their baby to a show like this?

Shush now Sinner. Don't be be talking sense and everything

Oops, sorry! Most remiss of me, I won't be doing that again, let me tell you.

Overthinkingnotdrinking · 07/03/2023 17:06

To be fair I did once see a mother and baby screening of ‘Antichrist’ by Lara Avon Trier advertised in Dalston. Not something I would take baby to, but no one would be jumping out of the screen to show their perineum in a pair of ladies pants.

Overthinkingnotdrinking · 07/03/2023 17:06

von not Avon!

bugsinmybrain · 07/03/2023 17:10

I also don't know about every cinema but the one nearest me, doesn't show just any old movie

They pick ones they feel comfortable with offering mums and babies

The worst I remember was a few swear words

They also would turn you away if your baby was able to mobilise itself from what I remember as there was quite a few arguments over this (not me, observed them) so though it was up to 12 months - it wasn't an event to do WITH baby, as much as yeah if you want to breastfeed through a film and don't mind other crying babies- we'll make money off you at 10am when nobody else comes to the cinema anyway

A baby has no idea what that is, it's no different from taking them to an 18 at baby cinema. I wouldn't take a toddler, in fact I wouldn't go full stop because drag isn't my thing, but this is very pearl clutchy.

Can we stop using the term pearl clutching in regards to children's safeguarding? Whatever else, I don't care, call people pearl clutchers for not wanting their partner to watch porn or not wanting a threesome or thinking strip clubs should be banned. But don't dismiss child safeguarding concerns with this little phrase that basically says 'you're not cool' no one should be insinuating that it's not cool to safeguard vulnerable people from abuse.

Clymene · 07/03/2023 17:13

Pearl clothing is such a horrible misogynist term.

MoirasSaggyBundles · 07/03/2023 17:17

ArabellaScott · 07/03/2023 16:31

So it's fine to take a baby to a strip club?

How about, if a group of dads took their babies to see some comely women artfully stripping, would that be deemed acceptable?

ArabellaScott · 07/03/2023 17:18

Increasingly I'm quite happy to be called a pearl clutcher. In fact, I'd wear one of those T shirts.

MoirasSaggyBundles · 07/03/2023 17:21

I have so much to say about how women are the bloody gatekeepers to this shit, and the ones merrily handing the keys over. And it all starts with the pearl clutching shaming and being a cool girl. Social contagion is rife in the female sex class.

Delphinium20 · 07/03/2023 17:22

I was so bummed to start that AMA and then have it vanish.

A question I want to ask anyone who thinks this baby caba baba whatava is okay, what about the physical risks from stiletto heels, flying trapeze in the air and fire breathing? I would have been worried about performers wearing pointy shoes doing stunts in the air so near my baby on the floor...and then the alcohol...did anyone think about just the physical space being so not safe?

nilsmousehammer · 07/03/2023 17:28

Yes. Like 'you're crazy' and other terms of abuse, 'pearl clutcher' is definitely starting to mean someone my trust would be far more readily placed in. It generally indicates they have common sense and normal, healthy boundaries.

Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis · 07/03/2023 17:30

I hadn’t finished reading the AMA thread, I missed the last page, but I didn’t see anything to warrant it being taken down and I’m disappointed it was. OP was completely unable to see how wrong it was but hopefully other people learned from it.

I must be naïve as I hadn’t realised drag shows were bondage gear, nipple tassles and not much else. I thought it was as much about elaborate costumes as singing and dancing.

ArabellaScott · 07/03/2023 17:32

I think the bondage gear, nipple pasties and stripper acts were extra, as they say.

Most drag is just lots of garish make up and men in false breasts, afaik. And innuendo.

Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis · 07/03/2023 17:35

Oh lovely, I’m sure the babies appreciated the extras 🤢.

Clymene · 07/03/2023 18:08

I honestly wonder what the OP of that thread thought would happen? I'm guessing it made her look at herself and not like what she saw.

Nice. Was it expensive?

PearlClutch · 07/03/2023 18:10

Only cost me my aura of youthful cool.

I think she was expecting opposition, but thought that it would be easy to dismiss as hysterical and irrational and, well, pearl clutching. What she actually got was extremely robust and substantiated debate, complete with information she hadn't had, a clarification on what queer theory actually is and a lot of questions she couldn't answer.

Which is why she asked for it to be deleted instead of just leaving it.

MoirasSaggyBundles · 07/03/2023 18:24

I don't think she was at all secure in her decision to go to this event, and her reason for starting the thread was to reassure herself it was ok (having read the recent negative press).

MeinKraft · 07/03/2023 18:51

I think one of the posters on the thread was correct in that if she's not one of the organisers she is connected to the event in some way and was hoping to change the narrative about it on MN.

I got them off ebay, of course they're not real.
