DH constant comments & moaning about stuff

CostoflivingDH · 24/02/2023 20:52

Like most others our family have had to rethink budgeting. We can no longer afford to buy all branded stuff and I’ve made quite a few changes to our grocery shop.

DH is constantly ‘commenting’ and really annoying me.

’oh can’t we afford Charmin anymore this toilet roll is not very good, you need to use twice the amount’

’This bacon is so thin it all breaks up and you can’t cook it properly’

’I don’t like this brown sauce, why can’t we have HP?’

’Are you sure this detergent cleans as well as Ariel?’

’I need Heinz beans, these taste like shit’

’Are these the cheap, basic range eggs? We should get free range where the chickens can roam’

’The chocolate on these biscuits tastes cheap, where’s the chocolate hobnobs?’

and on and on. I’ve explained as he well knows that everything costs more, he obviously knows this but just responds with ‘it’s a false economy though as most of this is either shit or you have to use twice the amount’. I’ve suggested he does the shopping but he refuses.

I’m a savvy shopper and am good at finding offers and bargains.

Does this cause friction in your household? He’s otherwise a reasonable human being and not bad husband.

This is nonsense
nobody would put up with this bollocks

WillowBeeT · 24/02/2023 22:08

Tell him to earn more.

Mammyloveswine · 24/02/2023 22:14

Nobody should be buying caged eggs.

SwordToFlamethrower · 24/02/2023 22:31

Stop with the caged eggs shaming. Some people cannot afford it.

Hbh17 · 24/02/2023 22:34

Weĺ, he's wrong to complain, but sometimes poorer quality items CAN be a false economy. If things are wasted/not eaten etc then they aren't bargains.

Stop with the caged eggs shaming. Some people cannot afford it.

... and others don’t give a F.

PhoenixIsFlying · 25/02/2023 00:10

Just to mention I only buy blacktail birds eggs, you can get them in waitrose as these birds don't have their beaks clipped. Poor creatures, how they suffer for humans.

PhoenixIsFlying · 25/02/2023 00:13

How sad there are posters who don't care about the welfare of animals. Maybe you will reincarnate as one.

Deadringer · 25/02/2023 00:34

I think it depends, can you afford decent brands? Some own brand stuff is great some is shite. I would rather forgo biscuits altogether than eat tasteless ones. And I won't compromise on toilet paper, it's worth paying extra for good stuff. There is being savvy, and there is being cheap. Maybe he should have a go at doing the shopping himself.

GrumpyPanda · 25/02/2023 00:38

He's not unreasonable but he needs to walk the walk and in this case that means getting into the nitty gritty and propose alternatives. Including cutting portions sizes/having meat less often etc.

I have hens and I didn't know until now that beak clipping was a thing in commercial crops how vile

Mumuser124 · 25/02/2023 00:52

Yes, causes trouble in our household too. I’m afraid I am on your husbands side and have probably said every example you have given in your post.

I have however, picked up an extra shift a month to pay for the better qualitie products so we don’t have to go without.

Mumuser124 · 25/02/2023 00:58

*quality. Odd auto correct.

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 25/02/2023 01:01

Everyone telling him to do the shopping, he'll probably come back, having spent a fortune but just have a load of random crap.

Yabu just for buying eggs from caged hens. Incredibly unreasonable.

All hens are "caged" at the moment due to Avian Flu.

FrogsWormsandButterflies · 25/02/2023 01:16

Put the cheaper stuff in the branded packaging and see if he notices!
I work in a supermarket and the amount of products that come in with different packaging in by mistake is quite eye opening

butterfliedtwo · 25/02/2023 01:17

YABU for cheap toilet roll.

He's right about the other stuff too. That's just too bad, but I'd not compromise on toilet roll.

BoxOfCats · 25/02/2023 01:27

I would tell him you're happy to go back to shopping now you were before, but you need to make up the shortfall in your budget somewhere else so it's up to him to find where the extra money is going to come from.

WillowBeeT · 25/02/2023 01:35

If you’s can’t manage to agree over the simple stuff, what are you’s gonna do when the prices start to climb properly and all your household bills start going up too? 2023 has only just started. We haven’t even reached April yet. Council tax, mobile phone contracts, internet costs, energy price cap ending, BoE base rate hikes for mortgage holders, to name but a few.
If he won’t wipe his arse with 2ply toilet roll, would he consider getting a second job?

StrawberryJam4Ever · 25/02/2023 01:37

I’m surprised that people still fall for the branded stuff & think they’re getting the best. Much of it’s exactly the same but comes in different packaging. Heinz beans & Charmin? Try Branston beans, they’re much tastier & cheaper. Nicky toilet roll’s cheapest & is far better than any of the others. Or Tesco do something similar. But in saying that the quality of some stuff’s not what it once was. Get him to do a shop & you do one & compare.

I find it more upsetting that some people have to scrimp, save and sometimes go without food themselves in order to feed their families. Principles are all very well but they don't feed the children.

Most supermarkets do own brand toilet roll that's better quality than Charmin. Buy the quilted stuff OP.

discobrain · 25/02/2023 03:40

I'd tell him to stop being such a picky bastard and eat what he's lucky to get.

Your better response would be how sad that producers can legally use low standards of animal welfare. What would you buy if your preferred eggs weren’t
available?

Whilst I too think animal welfare standards should be as high as possible there are some families who really can’t afford to buy anything other than basics.

Merlott · 25/02/2023 06:02

Are you going into debt each month trying to make ends meet?

And who is earning money, one or both of you?

If no debt, and if you don't earn, yabu sorry.
