To think schoolgirls wearing exposing skirts isn’t a feminism issue but a safeguarding one?!

Following on from the thread about skirt length inspections, AIBU to think stopping underage girls from revealing their underwear and bum cheeks to male teachers (or any teachers) isn’t ‘internalised misogyny’ but basic safeguarding?

Or am I just ‘not enlightened enough’ to understand that underage girls can expose what they want to grown men as long as they’re ‘happy and comfortable’ with it?

Disclaimer: I believe adult women can wear whatever TF they want and are not responsible for men’s reactions to them, but this is about children which is a different ball game.

Interested to know your thoughts!

Well yes, if male teachers are sexually attracted to pupils in short skirts that is absolutely a safe guarding issue and they should be fired

Quite.

PeekAtYou · 24/02/2023 17:25

I am surprised that male teachers were happy to check skirt lengths. Isn't that a safeguarding issue?

Absolutely, it should’ve been the female ones 🤮

I haven’t seen the thread you’re referring to, but it necessarily either? Arguably, part of the purpose of school uniform is teaching about choosing appropriate clothing for particular circumstances. A revealing skirt is fine if that’s what you like wearing at the weekend, or at a party. Most workplaces would ask you to go home and change if your skirt was flashing your knickers. Teachers enforcing a “professional” dress code for the school day just seems sensible to me.

Pastapizzalover · 24/02/2023 17:26

Your post doesn't really make much sense.

What do you mean by underage girls? Underage for what?

Who is exposing their bum cheeks and underwear?

Why are skirts a safeguarding issue, unless males cannot control themselves and are sexually attracted to teenage girls?

stripedsox · 24/02/2023 17:26

I think it's pervy that male teachers were doing the inspections. Not all men would get off on it but there is bound to be the odd one.

Ponderingwindow · 24/02/2023 17:28

Schoolgirls buy skirts to fit their waist. For some girls that means the skirts will be above the knee. this is not indecent.

policing skirts slightly above the knee over any other uniform infraction is discrimination. It is a feminist issue. It is distracting from girls education.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 24/02/2023 17:28

Why can’t they wear trousers? Warmer, more practical , gets rid of the ‘school uniform’ beloved of men in Ahem, Raincoats.

unisex uniforms, better for everyone, even the gender troubled.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 24/02/2023 17:28

It’s not about male teachers being “attracted” to girls wearing these ridiculously short skirts - it’s about it not being appropriate in a school in the same way it wouldn’t be appropriate in an office. It looks awful and is embarrassing for everyone when they get an eyeful they don’t need. 🙄

Bloody ludicrous of parents and kids to protest this as a “right”. Where does it end? Bikinis and hot pants. FFS.

Pastapizzalover · 24/02/2023 17:29

To add, I think if skirts are such an issue in schools then schools should just ban them. Everyone can wear a pair of trousers. Problem solved.

But I do think that the constant obsession with the length of teenage girls skirts is a bit weird.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 24/02/2023 17:29

Is this the kind of "safeguarding" that you were talking about on the other thread, OP, where your main point initially was that girls should not be permitted wear clothes that make male teachers feel uncomfortable?

Fairislefandango · 24/02/2023 17:29

I'm a teacher and I'm certainly not a fan of super-short skirts. I think they look awful. I'd rather have them all wearing jeans or something. I think girls' motives for wearing very short skirts do not come from a place of female empowerment at all. But what makes men harrass or assault women and girls is not skirt length, it'smale behaviour. Wearing longer skirts will not prevent women and girls from unwanted attention, harassment or assault by predatory men.

underneaththeash · 24/02/2023 17:30

I just posted the same thing - yes, it is!

Just say the uniform is trousers.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 24/02/2023 17:30

@Ponderingwindow have you been to a secondary school recently?? These skirts aren’t “above the knee” they are so short you can see their pants 🙄

YetiTeri · 24/02/2023 17:30

If skirts are a safeguarding issue then the answer is trousers. Not an inspection by an adult male.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 24/02/2023 17:31

Its not about male teachers feeling uncomfortable 🙄.

It is no bloody wonder schools can get staff when they have to pander to this bullshit instead of getting on with teaching 🤬.

Totally agree!

QuertyGirl · 24/02/2023 17:32

Why can't they just wear trousers?

HedwigIsMyDemon · 24/02/2023 17:33

@YetiTeri the girls don’t want to wear trousers - they have that option now and they don’t take it.

And heaven forbid in this day and age we ever make kids do something they don’t want to do 🙄.

Valeriekat · 24/02/2023 17:33

Girls roll up their skirts. We have all done it of course but that doesn't mean that we should have.
It becomes a safeguarding issue when adult males start hanging around schools at the end of the day to letch at the girls.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 24/02/2023 17:33

Can’t get staff

I totally agree, but this was the OP's point on the other thread.

IntentionalError · 24/02/2023 17:33

This is nothing new. Teenage girls have always worn their skirts as short as they can get away with. We certainly did.

Teachers have always disapproved.

Parents have always clutched their pearls about it.

Botw1 · 24/02/2023 17:35

@Valeriekat

Sureky the answer to that is to arrest predatory males?

Instead of blaming young girls for predatory male behaviour?
