To think schoolgirls wearing exposing skirts isn’t a feminism issue but a safeguarding one?!

Moonicorn · 24/02/2023 17:20

Following on from the thread about skirt length inspections, AIBU to think stopping underage girls from revealing their underwear and bum cheeks to male teachers (or any teachers) isn’t ‘internalised misogyny’ but basic safeguarding?

Or am I just ‘not enlightened enough’ to understand that underage girls can expose what they want to grown men as long as they’re ‘happy and comfortable’ with it?

Disclaimer: I believe adult women can wear whatever TF they want and are not responsible for men’s reactions to them, but this is about children which is a different ball game.

Interested to know your thoughts!

Young school girls wear short skirts because they are taught by their peers that to be "cool" you have to be daring and sexy.

To be seen as boring, was social suicide.

This directly correlates to your school skirt. Your school skirt was a big symbol of who you are. It was the same when I was in school. To be cool you had to roll up your skirt. It is flaunting the rules, being feminine and being daring all in one.

If you had a long skirt,, you were seen as boring, studious a nerd etc.

There is a lot of peer pressure at school. I rolled up my skirt to be cool. I'd say that we all did on here.

You know exactly why I reported it. I won't repeat what you said and luckily it's been removed quickly.

We've moved past blaming victims of sexual assault for what they were wearing at the time.

Icecreamandapplepie · 24/02/2023 19:16

I don't think girls should be allowed to wear tiny skirts that show everything anymore than I don't think boys should be allowed to wear tiny shorts. Noone needs to see these things! It is our job as adults to teach children to be safe, comfortable and yes, decent. Boys and girls.
The girls round here wear their skirts so short, they would have been seen as short by 90"s clubbing standards and that is short! Girls I know spend their time in ridiculously short skirts and they are not conducive to living a comfortable life as kids should have.
What a world where girls are convinced that it's their desire and choice to wear teeny tiny skirts that benefit noone but the predatory males out there.
I can't believe 'feminists' actually encourage girls to do so, can't get my head round it at all.
They should defo be allowed to wear trousers tho, and there was a better way of going about tackling the uniform issue than what these schools did.

@LolaSmiles

Do you think we should ban make up in schools?

I didn't blame her at all. I specifically said in my post "it is not her fault what happened". I didn't say she was wrong for wearing a short skirt.

What I DID say was I read a book about the case, and in it it says - levi belfield said he was attracted to her because of her short school skirt.

His words not mine.

I am concerned for these girls because I know what kind of creeps there can be out there . I don't think they know the full dangers. Which is why older adults (teachers ) should help them with this.

ArianahX · 24/02/2023 19:20

I don't think short skirt lengths make men attack teenage girls actually.
It's being a pervert that makes some men (& some teenage boys) attack girls.
I got attacked at school by some 16 yr old lads when I was a very young looking 13 yr old girl wearing trousers. Luckily I got away but I never told anyone as I thought it was my fault.

Again the last time I was attacked I was wearing trainers, loose trousers, a big coat, no make up & a ponytail... the fact is that men who attack women & girls do not really care about the clothes a female wears; you could walk around in a burka and still be at risk from a rapist.

It's a faulty way of thinking that ultimately ends with women in a niqab.

@Mooshamoo

You know he killed grown women too? And attempted to abduct other young girls not in school uniform

He was an opportunistic killer. He would have taken her regardless of what she was wearing

Awful victim blaming!

Yes but I think for children under the age of 18I, It should absolutely be enforced that they can't have their bums/private parts hanging out.

If there was porn with children under the age of 18 it would be totally against the law. So children under the age of 18 showing the bums/knickers should be totally against the law too.

They are children. We have to safeguard them.

BibbleandSqwauk · 24/02/2023 19:25

I teach secondary and the y10/11 girls have their skirts rolled up so short than when they sit, the hem is actually level with their crotch. They could wear trousers but choose not too. For male teachers, they feel v uncomfortable because they have no choice but to see acres of thigh and if they were accused of "looking" it would be hard to defend. You have to look at your class when teaching, you might want to stand next to them to see exactly what they've written, it's v v easy to get from that to an accusation by drama llama teenage girls. I've been teaching a loooong time. This happens. It's not fair on the male staff and it has nothing to do with pervy men or girls being entitled to do what they like. It's effectively a professional setting and should be treated as such by everyone ..and no, to the pp upthread who says we all did it..I didn't. I was a goth with long skirts and boots!!

Fairislefandango · 24/02/2023 19:26

Why? It's not at all. I'm saying young teenage girls who wear extremely short skirts are putting themselves in danger. It's true. There are so many predators around.

Saying 'It's true' doesn't make it true. Yes, there are predators around. Wearing a longer skirts isn't going to stop them. Wearing a short skirt isn't what makes you be attacked or harrassed.

And the teachers also think that.

Well I'm a teacher and I certainly don't think that.

Pastapizzalover · 24/02/2023 19:26

I guess if she had been wearing a more modest skirt then he wouldn't have done it?

If Sarah Everard hasn't walked home in the dark she wouldn't have been killed.

If Rachel Nickell hadn't walked in the park she wouldn't have been in danger.

If the 2 women every week killed by men changed their behaviour it wouldn't happen.

So you think it's ok for teenagera under 18 to show their bums/vaginas?

Why?

If their was porn with teenagers under 18 in it , it would be illegal. So why do you think is it ok for teenagers under 18 to go around with their bums/vaginas out in short school skirts.

Are you forgetting that these are very young teenagers?

I can't understand the women on here saying they should wear what they want! They are children! There needs to be safeguarding rules in place for them

Pastapizzalover · 24/02/2023 19:27

If we all just stayed home, covered up and kept our mouths shut we'd all be a lot safer. Oh wait..

Oh get a grip, they are wearing underwear.

Even if they have no skirt on at all it's no different from swimming.

Pottedpalm · 24/02/2023 19:31

Skirts like this are the norm in schools in my area.
They are made of jersey and ride up when the girls walk/sit down.
I can’t understand anyone defending their ‘right’ to wear skirts like this.

Pastapizzalover · 24/02/2023 19:27

There is a difference between you and these teenage girls. You are not a child.

We safeguard and protect children. We need to have rules in place to make sure teens don't show their bums /knickers to adult males.

That makes total sense to me. I don't know how it doesn't make sense to you.

Botw1 · 24/02/2023 19:32

Oh ffs.

So we've gone from short skirts to pants to now actual vaginas?

Get a grip.

BibbleandSqwauk · 24/02/2023 19:34

@Hendric but they are not swimming. A man in his 20s-60s can choose not to go to a swimming pool where teenage girls are. They can't choose not to see them in their classroom. Should male teachers not be allowed to teach in co ed schools? Every male teacher I have worked with for the last 25 years feels uncomfortable around this and sometimes I'm asked to speak to a femal student because they feel they can't. In any other context, someone being made to feel like that in their workplace would be supported.

WillowBeeT · 24/02/2023 19:34

stripedsox · 24/02/2023 17:26

I think it's pervy that male teachers were doing the inspections. Not all men would get off on it but there is bound to be the odd one.

TBH I would expect an decent man to refuse to do that, and make it clear to the head teacher that they would consider such a matter constructive dismissal if they chose to coerce him to do it. Then take the matter to the newspapers and an industrial tribunal.

Mooshamoo · 24/02/2023 19:35

Botw1 · 24/02/2023 19:32

Really? So if a 13 year old boy came into a classroom wearing tiny shorts that showed half of his ass cheeks and part of his butt crack, so you think thats acceptable?

Some of the women on here. I really can't understand you. It's like you have become so sexualised that you are defending the right of a 14 year old girl to be sexualised and wear whatever she wants.

Even though she is a young child. So so bizarre.

Pastapizzalover · 24/02/2023 19:37

I don't think a single poster on this thread has said that very short skirts are ok for school.

But it isn't because the girls are putting themselves at risk.

Botw1 · 24/02/2023 19:37

@BibbleandSqwauk

Why do they feel uncomfortable?

Thats really worrying

Why should we continue teaching girls that not making men 'uncomfortable' is there responsibility rather than teaching men they shouldn't be perving over young girls?
