MIL has my Valentine gift

About 5 years ago, DH bought me a few gifts for valentines day including a mug, it was very distinctive being red with 'love you' on it.

I really liked this mug. It would cheer me up whenever I looked at it, it was a perfect size for my coffee, comfy handle, just a nice mug. I used it daily.

A few years ago we stayed with MIL between house moves for 4 weeks, and I took my favourite mug.

I noticed her using it a few times, fine, okay, fair enough we were staying there. But when we moved out, and I couldn't find this mug. I swear I packed it but it wasn't in the box with other mugs.

The next time we visited MIL, I noticed my mug in her cupboard. I thought oh good, I can't have packed it! I brought it out and said I'd been looking for it and phew there it was!

She said NO that's her mug. That someone bought it for her. I asked who? She couldn't remember.

This mug is very distinctive, even with a little scratch I made by accident the first week I had it, so I know it's my mug.

Of course I'd be a right knob to have argued further, so I put it back in her cupboard. It's just a mug but every valentines day I think about it and it irks me! It was my mug!

When you get it back, get dh to write a message on the bottom in sharpie.

Tell her, she was right, it turned up unexpectedly

Make a custom photo mug for her.
With a picture of you drinking out of the I love you mug.

I have slept on it and I'm definitely going to get the mug back. I know it's mine, it has sentimental value, and I'll buy her another mug. I'll say it's from DH. She will love that.

The thing is, I will have to forever hide it so she doesn't see it because then she'll think I've stolen it, as she has had it for absolutely ages now. But I still want it.

Also, shall I tell DH I'm getting it back or should I just get it, and not say a word? Just pop it at the back of the cupboard?

Yes!!!! Great you are getting this important item back.

Definitely talk to your DH and work out the best way to do it that suits both of you. And when you have it back DH writes your name on the bottom. I love your idea to give her a mug from DH - that's what she wants, and if she gets one that is genuinely from him then that is a win-win.

I've had a friend ask where I got a scarf I was wearing when I visited her from,
only she'd given it to me!
She'd somehow totally forgotten gifting it and thought I'd "taken" it.

It's stayed with me as I don't know if she actually believes she gave it to me or still deep down thinks I stole it.

I know MIL territory is always dicey, but could she genuinely believe it's hers?

It's funny how our memories can play tricks sometimes.

I've also previously given away my much loved Chelsea boots to charity in a moment of madness.

Looked for them high and low for ages until DH reminded me I'd given them away.
Why would I?, I loved them! Such stupidity and I think of them every time an outfit isn't quite right.
I think, if only I had my boots.... they'd make everything ok.

I'd buy one and swap it OP.

Go to MiL's place and pretend you are a cat. Sit on the kitchen counter and slowly push the mug towards the edge of the counter. Preferably when it's full of coffee. Watch her face fill with dismay. Push the mug off the counter so there's shattered mug and coffee all over the floor. MiL will shreik at the horror of the situation.

Don't even twitch a whisker in acknowledgment of her distress. Remember you are a cat and you don't care. You can if you wish at this point add to her misery by sticking one leg straight up in the air and do a bit of personal grooming. Be your inner cat!!

Purrfect solution from @SmudgeButt

Pompom2367 · 19/02/2023 14:16

Op keep us updated definitely hoping you get it back

Beeinalily · 19/02/2023 14:26

@SmudgeButt I don't approve of your suggestion, but I'm very impressed by your knowledge of cats!

I'd like to know this, too, OP especially if it involves and SAS-type raid with your DH throwing tear gas through the letterbox before abseiling down the roof and through the kitchen window to Semtex the cupboard door open to grab the mug

Dibbydoos · 26/02/2023 10:15

And your DH won't step in and say he bought it for you?

Just take it. Its yours.

endoftheworldniteclub · 26/02/2023 10:23

Did you take it back?

ehb102 · 26/02/2023 13:45

Find a similar mug. Take it to MILs. Smuggle out your mug. Take new mug. Smash it into tiny pieces. "So sorry!" Enjoy your mug at your house.

Ineedatrain · 03/03/2023 00:55

Do you have your mug @CloudySuns 🤣

onlylarkin · 03/03/2023 01:27

I would have taken it back. But I don't make the smartest decisions sometimes.

Your hubby could say "hey that is the mug I bought OP" and take it with him.

CloudySuns · 05/03/2023 06:56

Just to update, I don't have it yet! I haven't managed to visit her since, but the plan is in place!
