To think this ‘valentines’ m&s meal is rubbish?

Would you be disappointed with this as your valentines ‘cheap’ meal? When you ask for steak, asparagus and escalopes and come back with this instead 🙄think the main is horrendous.

Morrisons have a better deal. £15 for one starter, main (which includes two rump steaks), two sides, dessert and a bottle of wine.

TenoringBehind · 10/02/2023 13:16

Did your OH buy this in a store? ‘Come back with’ suggests its wasn’t an Ocado order to me. I would be disappointed if they’d bought food they knew I didn’t like (which is the implication).
If it was Ocado you could have declined the substitution.

it wouldn’t massively appeal to me as a meal, and those potatoes aren’t the greatest (much nicer done yourself and very easy).

YABU for trying to buy asparagus in February (and M&S are unreasonable for including it in their valentines offering).

Buymyselfflowers · 10/02/2023 13:17

It looks ok. I would want some fresh veg with it and maybe a bit of salad with the prawn cocktail.

Dijoduo · 10/02/2023 13:18

Is this good enough as a substitute for what you wanted from an online order delivery? No.

Is this good enough from your partner, who you presumably like? Yes.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/02/2023 13:19

Well it's obviously no good if you wanted steak and don't like breaded chicken.

But maybe you should have agreed a second option with whoever came back with the chicken? IE if they don't have steak, get X or don't bother at all with the deal.

It doesn't look great for £20. I'd probably go with the normal £12 dine in deal and get wine and possibly a starter or pudding separately, as you only get one or the other with that deal.

Hoppinggreen · 10/02/2023 12:43

Do you mean Scallops OP?
I don’t think that’s awful but needs some salad or green veg

This.

I don't understand what you mean by escalope in this context? Is it a substitution for a different meal you selected?

BarbaraofSeville · 10/02/2023 13:21

While I agree that people shouldn't be buying asparagus in February, all shops sell it so whether or not the OP buys it isn't going to make a difference.

People would complain more if we went back to seasonal fruit and veg, which at this time of year would be pretty much cabbage or nothing, including no salad, berries or anything at all really.

OneTC · 10/02/2023 13:22

I don't think it's bad for the price.

It's not steak but if someone was cooking it for me I'd be happy. Someone else cooking and I'll eat anything as that's a proper treat!

Obviously no good to you if you don't like it

LynneBenfield · 10/02/2023 13:23

I suspect you ended up with breaded chicken because you stated ‘escalope’, so you got what you asked for in that respect.

I agree with this. You literally asked for the wrong thing OP.

windyarse · 10/02/2023 13:27

I would be disappointed that £20 is considered a cheap meal from a supermarket.

ClandestineAdulation · 10/02/2023 13:28

It’s a perfectly nice meal with some veg added. It isn’t steak as you appear to have asked for, but I certainly wouldn’t say it was a rubbish meal!

Penguinsaregreat · 10/02/2023 13:30

Looks fine to me.

inappropriateraspberry · 10/02/2023 13:31

Who did you ask? Was it specifically an M&S meal deal you wanted? If so, did you check the options available? Do you know if steak etc was in stock at the shop?
Looks like a nice meal to me, but if you wanted certain things without compromising maybe you should have gone shopping yourself.

Crostimosti · 10/02/2023 13:31

I had a look at the Valentines meal deal in M and S and thought it was a poor offering. I'm not a massive fan of the meal deals anyway - would prefer a takeaway for the price these days or a really nice home cooked meal. But, I think the standard has dropped while the cost has risen.

When it was Dine in for 2 for £10 it was worth doing! Those days are well gone.

kegofcoffee · 10/02/2023 13:31

If this is subbed on my shop I'd be hugely disappointed.

I would have expected have subbed it for an alternative own brand steak, but still given you the deal price.

If I'd hinted to DH that I wanted steak and he'd come home with this instead. I'd be a bit disappointed, but still happy he'd made the effort.

LubaLuca · 10/02/2023 13:31

Without further info we'll have to assume there wasn't any steak and this seemed like the next best option. It seems reasonable value.

I'd check the dates though, even though they're 'Valentine's' items, they may go out of day before Tuesday.

2013isback · 10/02/2023 13:31

In the context of "steak, asparagus and escalopes", I would've probably assumed escalopes meant scalloped potatos. But of that was your request, then I agree that this is nothing like what you asked for.

MotherOfPuffling · 10/02/2023 13:32

Good tip, @mum2jakie, thank you 😊

ShillyShallySherbet · 10/02/2023 13:32

Looks nice to me but where is the veg?

Stravaig · 10/02/2023 13:32

If I wanted red meat and green vegetables, I'd not be thrilled about prawns, chicken, potatoes, cheesecake, pink fizz. Totally different foods 🤷‍♀️

inappropriateraspberry · 10/02/2023 13:33

Maybe OP meant escargot? 🐌

PigTableManners · 10/02/2023 13:33

It's all so beige and processed. It's not a treat to eat this. If I'm spending calories I'd rather it's worth it. This is not my idea of a nice meal. I like simple fresh quality ingredients.

KatherineJaneway · 10/02/2023 13:40

You've got prawn cocktail and booze, I'd take that as a win

PinkyFlamingo · 10/02/2023 13:41

Ypu need to come back and give us more details
